Courage, dear heart- Apurba Kundu
Why does being brave not look anything like it? I was not wearing battle fatigues, no combat boots and no armour in place but I was being the bravest I could be. Even the bravest are mere mortals and I am made of water and clay. So, when the mountains called at the unlikeliest of times, I had to go. Apart from the heavy backpack that I resolved to carry all through the trek, I brought my demons along.
A Picturesque Route to Tranquility – Har ki Dun by Alok Nanda
“Wake up ! Everybody WAKE UP !!” No, that wasn’t an alarm. That was Dushyant’s wake up call. I slipped out of my sleeping bag and stretched up a little bit. Then I checked my watch and felt amazed at finding even the minute hand and hour hand stretching up at 1800 .Ofcourse the minute hand facing north and the hour hand facing south. I zipped out the camp and found Shravan, the local guide, standing just outside the camp with morning tea. That was the best luxury we had at those 10,000+ feet up there and in those freezing temperature.
8 days of awesomeness in the Himalayas – Har Ki Dun
I had been planning for a trek in the Himalayas for quite a long time. But the idea was far from reality due to scarcity of time and resources. One single opportunity.. i.e. what I was looking for. And I got it this April finally. I registered for the Har Ki Dun trek with Indiahikes team at the eleventh hour and managed to turn it into reality within the stipulated time. The rest is pure bliss. It was a trek of a lifetime.
Entry into Himalayan treks – Har Ki Dun by Somil Bhandari
Himalayas! One of the biggest natural assets of India. Home to nine of the top ten tallest peaks of the world. They are a blessing for India. Its not a surprise that this region hosts the best hiking trails, ranging from easy, to most difficult, to suicidal! So, in April of 2015, when my friend invited me to the Har Ki Dun trek with India Hikes, without thinking, I said Yes!
Har Ki Dun – The Indiahikes experience by Dr. Kaustubh Harshey
Old loves die hard. For the last three years I was caught up with professional life, postgraduation, the disadvantages of being flung to the far south in Tamil Nadu hinterland and what not. But I always remembered my last tryst with the Himalayas way back in 2009; of pristine blue skies, fields of snow, the winter chill, the clean air, majestic alpine trees and all the beauty that it possessed.
Har Ki Dun winter trek by B G Baliga
My first winter trek to Himalayas is one of the best trekking experience of my life. It was my last moment decision to register for Har Ki Dun winter trek with Indiahikes.
I already registered for Prashar Lake trek with IH and flight tickets yet to book for 24th January extended weekend for Delhi from Bangalore. Finally, extended my leaves and booked for Har Ki Dun winter trek.
Hi Swathi,
When is the best time for Winter Har Ki dun Treak…
Please suggest me a bunch of 10 guys planning for winter trek.
Hi Gautam, If you want to experience snow on Har Ki Dun, go after 15 December. 🙂
Hey Aswati, is January’s first wk would be a good time to go there?
Hi Gaurav,
Trekkers are not allowed to trek at Har ki Dun till February because of the weather and also because this interferes with migration of animals in the forests around.
Hi Aswati – what’s the best time for the trek if I want to see the greenery and avoid heavy snow ?
Hi Mudit, for that, September would be the best time! The grasslands will be green and there won’t be any snow.
Hi team..first of all, thanks a lot for such a wonderful website. I want to experience the best of both worlds-green Meadows and snow. When is the best time for that?
Thanks,
Sainath
Hi Sainath, the best time to experience snow and greenery would be the end of April. This is when the snow is melting away and giving rise to greenery. In around a week or two, the snow completely disappears leaving behind fresh flora. 🙂
Thanks Swathi. April seems too far as I am super excited to be there. How’s it in October/Nov/Dec? Does it start snowing at that time? I ask this because I need to purchase trek gear like shoes according to the climate I might face.
Or, is there a ‘one that shoe fits all seasons’ ?
Will I get to experience snow during 25 November to 1 December?
If not, which trek will be best for moderate snow and temperature during that time period?
Hi Manoj, there usually is no snow until mid-December. Around 15-20th December is when the first winter snow falls. From then until April you’ll see a good amount of snow. This is the case for all the treks that reach the 12,000 ft mark – Har Ki Dun, Kedarkantha, Kuari Pass, Dayara bugyal, etc. You’ll not find snow on any accessible trails in November.
Hi Swathi
I am in two minds to go for this trek in dec end. This will be my first trek. Is it a trek for a first time experience. I would rate my physical strength as 4-5 on 10. And I am not someone who stays fit in winters. Would u suggest for it
Hello Mehroo, for any high altitude trek that you choose to go on, you have to get fit. Do you do any physical exercise regularly to keep fit? You must prepare well before you go on a high altitude trek. Start with brisk walking and then take it up a notch to jogging or running. You need to be fit to enjoy any trek 🙂 Which month are you planning to go on a trek in?
Can we go for har ki dum trek in feb? Is the route trekkable at that time?
Hello Deepan
The Har Ki Dun trek cannot be done in February because of heavy snowfall that blocks the trails. But you can do the trek in March when the snow is a lot more manageable.
Hi team,
I am planning to go for the trek from 18th – 25th march. Which day i should reach Dehradun, and for what date i should take a ticket for the return.
Hi Saumya,
Reach Dehradun by 17th evening preferably. In case you plan to reach on 18th morning by train, make sure you book only by Nanda Devi express. You can book your return ticket for anytime after 9.00 pm on 25th.
I want trek Har Ki Dun in Early March 2018. What will be the condition of the trail?
Hi Atanu,
The trail is likely to have a lot of snow in early March. It might be inaccessible in some parts. I suggest you wait till at least mid March or later.
Hi,
Would like to trek between 22nd Dec and 1st Jan, would the dates be out for this time range?
Hi Shradha,
Har ki Dun is closed in December and through winter. A lot of wildlife movement takes place at this time in the region. So, the Forest Department does not allow trekking during that time.
how is the climate at har ki dun in september ?
i wish to book for 15th september
or which is the best season to visit Har ki dhun?
will there be snow during 15 spetember?
Hi Rohit,
September is not a month for snow. If you want snow you should schedule your trek in between December last week to April first week.
Thanks
Aditya
Hi,
I am planning Har ki dun trek 23 March 2019 to 30 March 2019.So can i come to Deharadun on 23rd by Nanda Devi Express?
23 March 2019 to 30 March 2019 will this be good timing for see greenery or there will be snow?
Hi Swati,
Yes, you can take the Nanda Devi and arrive at Dehradun early morning on the 23rd.
In March you will get to see both snow and some greenery. The lower altitudes will not have much snow but as you climb higher, the amount of snow on the trail will increase.
Can i do this trek during Oct 1st week or 2nd week? How will be the conditions?
You’ll experience the clearest weather in October. There won’t be snow, but the autumn colours and shades are grand and lively in October! 🙂 It’s good time, go for it!
Hellooo.,
i have already booked for Har ki dun trek 25 March 2019 to 01 April 2019. So if i reach early on 24th evening where i can stay till 25th morning?
and my trek ends on 01 April by what time i can book for return ticket to Bangalore?
Hi Lakshmi,
You can look up some hotels online and stay the night there. Hotel Drona and Vishnu Inn are popular among trekkers.
As for your return tickets, if you are going via Delhi then you can check for late night trains. However, you can catch a direct flight to Bangalore the next day on the 2nd.
We have planned for 10th May to 21 st may for Har ki Dun…….is this a good period for trekking here and what are the Atmosphereric condition during that period…does it affected by snow in tht schedule.
Hi Jignesh, there isn’t really much snow in May at Har Ki Dun. It’s a good time of the year to trek there to see wonderful greenery. 🙂
What about May?
Yes, we have batches in May too!
