Our Chief Editor, Swathi Chatrapathy, was invited a few months ago to deliver a TEDx talk. Swathi was very keen to talk about how anyone must look at work. She was much anguished about some fundamental mistakes people seemed to be making in their careers. 

Her thoughts are fresh, insightful and full of practicality. Swathi talks about what it means to make your work your identity (it is a new thought), Why the “why” of working is even more important and finally she dwells on the much debated work-life balance and comes up with her own understanding of it.

I’d like to start by showing you a picture of my office.

This is one of my offices. I call it my office because this is part of my work. I sit here talking with our team members, discussing work, about the problems we face and how to solve them. Some of our discussions have led to far reaching consequences in our work and in trekking.

I want to show you a picture of my other office.

This is also my office. My more permanent office in Bangalore. It’s here that I sit at a desk, I work on a laptop, I have working hours, the whole gamut.  

Shuffling between the office and the mountains, I have learnt a few lessons about how we must look at work.

And hopefully, by the end of what I tell you, you might see work how I see it too. 

I am Swathi Chatrapathy. I head the digital team at Indiahikes, where we are doing some extraordinary work in defining the future of trekking in our country. I do not know if you know but Indiahikes is the pioneering organisation in trekking in our country. It is also the largest trekking organisation.  

I use the word ‘extraordinary,’ because trekking is basically walking from one place to another. It is the first thing mankind learnt to do. Yet, in 2020 we are still defining the future of trekking. We are exploring new routes and setting standards in safety, sustainability and even experiential learning. And we’ve been doing this for the past ten years!

I also have a Youtube show called Trek With Swathi, where I dive deep into the trekking world, sharing trails, tips and trek talk. It is India’s most popular trekking channel.

I also write a column every Thursday where I share opinions and news from the world of treks. I have been writing this column without fail for three years. Over 100,000 people subscribe to this column. 

Through my work, I’ve been fortunate to learn from the great outdoors and from an organisation with a lot of legacy. 

And I thought I’ll take this time to share three of my biggest learnings with you.

Just before I started this work 5 years ago, I was looking for a job. I had just quit my job at a well known newspaper, I was looking for something to keep me occupied, fit my skills and help me earn. 

It was by sheer coincidence that I came across Indiahikes. A friend of mine went on a trek in the Himalayas and came back raving about the orgsanisation she went with. She told me they have a website with terrific content, and that they may be looking for content writers. 

And so it happened. Indiahikes was five years old back then. Somehow, with my writing skills and possibly more with my convincing skills, I bagged the job and started working there

My first few months at work were fraught with confusion in my mind.

Confusion because I didn’t know what to do at work. I knew a bit of content writing, but was completely new to the trekking world. Nobody told me what tasks to do, not the founders, not my seniors. Instead, they gave me a certain vision to work towards and told me to take charge and grow my own work. 

I was confused. This was very different from what I was told to do in my earlier job. 

In my previous job, my editor had told me exactly what to do everyday. Write one story a day. Edit one page a day. She either accepted my stories, or scrapped them. There was no inbetween. 

I couldn’t make sense of such ambiguity. 

But within three months of joining work, something happened that changed my approach towards work completely.  

Just like any first timer in the Himalayas, I was taken in by the mountains. We were camping in the wilderness, I could see snow-capped peaks at a touching distance. It was surreal! 

The trek was going well, until I reached the summit of the trek.

Once I reached the summit, I had a few minutes to myself. There was a small shrine at the top. I sat beside the shrine, looking at all those big mountains in the distance.

And for no reason at all, I started to cry. 

Frankly, I felt silly. Because physically, I felt good, mentally I felt accomplished, I’d come such a long way! And yet I was crying. This was absolutely uncalled for. Where were these thoughts and emotions coming from?

When I heard footsteps behind me, I quickly wiped off my tears. I couldn’t show myself like that to anybody.

It was my first realisation about how powerful a trek could be. It had impacted my mind, my body and my spirit. And it had a similar effect on all my fellow trekkers. I could see it in their talk and their demeanour. The trek had touched them deeply. 

And then I understood what one of our visions was. It was simply to get people to trek. Didn’t matter where, when or with whom. But to simply trek because a trek is such an impactful journey. It can change your life.  

Once I understood the vision, my entire approach towards my work changed. I knew exactly what I had to do.

And that’s how I learnt my first lesson on how to look at work. 

It was the exact opposite of what I had been doing all along. I had been blindly doing my daily tasks, not understanding why I was doing what I was doing.

At Indiahikes it took me months to understand the why. It also took many conversations, many questions plus experiencing the vision itself for me to understand the why.

And I notice that most people don’t give their work this time and effort to understand the why. They begin to think their organisation doesn’t have a why. 

But the truth is, every organisation has a why. Whether a start-up or a large MNC. Without a reason why, the organisation wouldn’t exist. 

In my case, once I understood my ‘why’, I could clearly see what I had to do. I had to take trekking forward.

Soon after coming back to Bangalore, with my why clear in my mind, I started a video show. On my show, I would talk about trekking trails in the Himalayas. I would guide trekkers on how to trek, where to trek, and share tips.

We did this consistently for months. Sure enough, the show grew in popularity amongst trekkers. Trekkers across the country were using the videos for guidance. It was something that didn’t exist in this world. 

Two years later, I was on my way to another trek, when I learnt my next lesson on how to look at work.

It was an overnight train from Delhi to dehradun and exhausted from the day’s travel, I was fast asleep. 

It was in the early hours, I heard someone whispering my name. I thought I was dreaming. But when I realised it was real and remembered I was in a sleeper train, I woke up with a start! 

She was telling me “Hi Swathi! I’ve seen your videos. I’m on my way to the base camp for my first ever trek and your videos helped me prepare for my trek so well. Thanks a lot!” 

With just that sentence, she disappeared and got off the train.

I didn’t know how to react. Of course I was elated that someone had recognised me. 

But what struck me was that she had identified me with my work. She knew I was Swathi from the trek videos. Swathi from Indiahikes.  

Little did I know back then that this was the first of the many recognitions to come. 

I would always think this is such a niche world, just a handful might watch the videos. And yet I was so wrong. 

People started identifying me at so many places. The airport, the railway station, restaurants, the streets, my own apartment, even people on trekking trails in the middle of nowhere. 

They would all approach me and say “Hey, you’re Swathi from the trek videos right?” 

It was embarrassing, yet overwhelming to be recognised for my work.

Making my work my identity gave me a certain drive that I never had before. I was suddenly looking at how I can get better at my work and make a bigger impact. It made me more ambitious.

And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me. 

I thought about the most successful CEOs and COOs in the world. Sheryl Sandberg, Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai. All of them have made their work their identity. 

Even here, when I look at other TEDx speakers who are here, they are known and identified by their work.

And I’m telling you, you don’t have to be in a field where exposure is easy, like writing or film making. Even as a techie or an architect, sitting in your office, you can make your work your identity. The best way to do that is to get very good at your work.

It takes time, but this identity scales up. You first identify yourself with your work, then you get better at it. Then your own organisation identifies you with the work, and finally, the larger world around you begins to identify you by your work. 

And this is what propels your career forward. And this identity is what will make you a person to be reckoned with.

But gaining this identity takes time and effort. 

With all the time and effort that was going into my work, many of my peers started putting in this thought about work-life balance in my head. Which is what I want to cover in my third learning.

All my friends swore by it! They had very strictly separated their personal lives from their work lives.

And I was struggling to do that, because my work made a big difference to my personal life. 

And then something happened that gave me my answers.

I was in Mysore to attend a wedding. And the wedding turned out to be on a Thursday. 

As I mentioned earlier, I write a weekly column every Thursday. 

So that Thursday, I had to send a mailer. 

Which meant, I had to write the mailer, proof-read it, put it up on our email management tool, test the email, and send it out. And I had to do everything before 2 pm.

Thankfully I had my laptop with me. So I sat there, typing away, occasionally looking up to greet relatives. Every now and then, I made some small talk with people. My sister, husband, cousins were hovering about me, keeping me company, sometimes teasing me for working at a wedding.

After some time, I noticed something strange! All these people who were teasing me about my work started offering to help me. My sister helped me ideate better for my mail. My husband prood-read it. My cousin tested the mailer. It’s like they had almost taken over my work! 

Watching them, I realised how well they knew about my work, how involved they were in my work life. They had been a part of this 5 year journey of mine at every step. And they loved my work as much as I did!

That’s when my doubts about work-life balance started to disappear. 

I realised the concept of work-life balance was highly misunderstood. 

The stronger the integration, the more wholesome your life becomes.

Just like my family had helped me with my work, my mentors and colleagues at work would also emphasise on the importance of having a high quality personal life. They constantly pushed me towards living a healthy, fit and enriched life.   

This beautiful exchange of work and life made my life so much more wholesome. And I cannot imagine work-life balance in any other way.

Over the past five years, I have been trying to dissect how to look at work.

And these are three of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt.  

First, once you understand the why, your life gains purpose. You find meaning at work. 

Second, when you make your work your identity, you become ambitious. You get better and better. Very soon you are recognised not only at your workplace but even outside your sphere of work. 

And finally, when you reach a collaborative work-life balance, your life becomes so much more wholesome. Work is no longer laborious. It is a labour of love.

Last year I was on the Chandrashila summit. You must go there if you can. It is not a difficult trek, but the sight that you see from the summit can knock you off your feet. When the first rays of the sun touch the Chaukhamba massif, this is what you see:

This trek starts from Sari, a small village in the remote part of Himalayas with not more than 150 houses. 

In one corner of this village is a small gully in the mountain side, filled with trash.  Most of it tourism waste. This village has many such dump spots. But this is not unique to Sari. Most trekking villages in our Himalayas face the same problem.

Take a look at this beautiful meadow. Just behind the mule, in the opening between the mountain is a similar waste dump.  All our treks share the same fate.

Now, I want you to try imagine this wilderness:  These places are very inaccessible. There aren’t any corporation, municipality, any bodies to take care of the place.  Dustbins, waste collecting vans – things we are used to in the cities are hard to imagine here. The nearest landfills are almost 250 kms away.   

How can you solve the problem of waste in such a place?

This is what my team has been working on for the past 6 years. I head the Green Trails team. The Green Trails Project is an independent division of Indiahikes, one of India’s largest trekking organisation. 

The problem we are working on is this. To find a way to clean up the mountains and reduce the inflow of litter.

Our idea to solve the problem was simple. Educate trekkers and villagers around trekking zones, provide a proper waste collection system, transport the waste to landfills and find a way to maintain it over time. To me, it was a matter of providing the right infrastructure and building the right system.

It turned out to be a very difficult and costly task – an unsustainable one at that.  We were putting in expensive means and resources to bring down waste.

While doing this we realized something. Landfill was where our collected waste was going to — a place where waste is forgotten and left for eternity.  

It got us thinking. To us, it seemed that we were simply transferring the waste. With it our responsibility for it to the landfill. Nothing else.  Also, it is not that the waste stopped growing.

Building infrastructure and putting systems is only good to manage waste.  To truly solve the waste crisis we need to do two things. One, increase the waste collected by a big margin – we needed to match the rate at which littering was increasing. Two, we also had to reduce the waste altogether — either from getting generated or from reaching the landfill.  

This required more than an infrastructure solution. It required us to look at the problem in a completely different way. We had to get everyone to change their behaviour.

By behavioral change, I mean looking into our habits and perceptions that we have about waste. Waste was not going to get collected by simply asking people to be mindful.

How many of us have tried to make a big behavioral change in our lives? Just think about the last time we got out of bed to go for an early morning run.

I have tried to make several behavioral changes in my life. Each of those tasks have been herculean.

If making a behavioral change in myself was such a difficult task, imagine bringing in total strangers with different outlooks to do the same. It almost seemed impossible. 

But we knew that getting people to think and inculcate a new behaviour was the right way to do it. Because when done right, it was much more effective and sustainable.

Today, I want to share three such stories of behavioral changes that we have worked on

The first problem we needed to solve was to increase the amount of waste we are able to bring down. 

Every year more than 5,000 people flock to just one of these treks.

As a general rule, going on a trek meant following leave no trace – meaning, you do not leave anything other than your footprints behind.  But that is not the general practice. It is ingrained in most of us to throw the waste in hand. Even the most conscious trekker struggled with this.  When you are climbing a steep mountain, focused on your next breath, this is the last thing in your mind.

Inevitably, a lot of waste is generated. To clean the mountains, we needed to stop people from littering and clean the existing litter. How do we do this?

Eco bag.  This is an eco bag.  Every trekker of ours wears this. In fact one easy way to recognise an Indiahikes trekker is to look out for an Eco-bag.  

The instruction to our trekkers was very simple. Tie the eco bags on your waist, pick up litter on the trail/camp. Give the litter to us at the camp when you reach.

With eco bags in place, we started to notice these behavioral changes:

The mere fact that an eco bag was tied to their waist made trekkers stop littering. With a little nudge, they even started to pick up other’s waste. No special instruction was required.  

Until then trekkers always saw the problem as someone else’s to solve.  More conscious people could not see how to solve the problem. The very presence of eco bags empowered them to think of themselves as part of the solution.  

The problem became approachable. With an entire trekking community participating, an inherent shyness to participate in such activities reduced.

The impact went much beyond than this.  As more and more people saw us collecting waste, people hesitated to litter.  The amount of littering reduced in proportion to the amount of people going on the trek. 

More and more people from the local community started becoming conscious. They started to produce lesser litter themselves. 

Many trekkers took this practice and started active clean-up on treks around their homes. 

Over time this became the standard for most trek organizations. Now, other trek organizations have their own eco bags.  

Slowly eco bags became a symbol of how treks run.

From a culture of indifference, we have brought in a culture of proactiveness. In a span of three years we were able to bring down 50,000 kgs of waste from the mountains!

Let me also say this. Eco bag has not solved the problem completely.  We still have people who question why they need to pick up other’s waste. We still have lots of waste to pick up.  

But we are heading in the right direction.

This brings me to the second issue we had in hand. We needed to reduce the waste going to the landfill.  

When I started working at Indiahikes, I noticed that we were not segregating our waste at source. So whatever we collected was going directly to the landfills.

Segregating waste reduces the amount of waste going to landfill by 60-70%. This was incredible. Which meant that of this 50,000 kg we could prevent 30,000 kg and even more of waste going to landfills.  

We knew that segregating waste is an important step. But it is a difficult task. Have you tried segregating waste at home? Most of us don’t.

How can you get trekkers to segregate on a trek? Mind you, we are asking them to segregate in some of the hardest terrain and worst weather after a hard day’s trek.  But we knew it was the right way to trek. The intent to segregate is not a natural habit for any of us. Building that habit is a huge challenge. We tried several ways to do that.  Most of them failed.

For example, at every campsite we prominently kept three clearly labeled sacks. In our trek leader briefings, everyone was asked to segregate the waste at each campsite.  Yet, we noticed that the sacks still came down with mixed waste. 

We realized that even after explaining trekkers did not know which waste went where. A lot of them did not bother.  

This was a problem.  We introduced new posters, illustrations, had more detailed briefings — but none of them were effective.

Then one day, in one of our experiments, we threw a plastic sheet on the ground and asked trekkers to join us segregate.

We noticed an immediate behaviour change. Trekkers were happily segregating waste. Not only were they doing it quickly, they were more accurate. What was happening?  

Trekkers needed nudges. They understand that segregation was important.  But after a hard day’s trek, it was just easy to skip. The nudge helped. 

When they saw everyone participating, it brought about a sense of collective responsibility. Even people who were bystanders, participated.  Peer pressure started to work. 

When it was done together as a community activity, the accuracy improved. People helped each other. Mistakes were less.

During this exercise, we also saw changes in their outlook.

Our trek leaders heard trekkers saying how easy it was to throw waste and how difficult it was to fill a sack of garbage.

A lot of them understood the importance of segregating at source.  The act of segregating waste once it is mixed, made them realize how tedious it was.  

For a lot of them, it was a moment of humility.  They started appreciating people who worked in waste management at the grassroot levels.

In short, the short act of segregating waste, got them to think.  And doing it everyday on the trek helped build this habit on the treks.

Today even as I talk to you, the amount of waste that we send to the landfills have reduced dramatically. The rest is upcycled, recycled or composted.  

Our waste collection was going up, we were diverting almost 60% of waste from landfills. What do we do with the 40% waste?

The problem with the 40% is that they are mainly non-recyclable waste – chocolate wrappers, biscuit wrappers, shampoo sachets – these are the waste that get thrown out very easily.  Once I stopped and asked a small kid why he was throwing down a chips packet, he told me, what else to do with it?

So, that is what we worked on – what can we do with these waste?  In villages, much of the generated waste is non-recyclable waste. To stop them from littering or burning the waste, we needed to show them the value the waste holds.  We realized that upcycling was a way to do that. We thought that if they are able to sell the products out of this waste, they would see it differently.

We started with the women.  If we could change their minds, then the men and children would follow.

To do this, first, we had to identify the products to upcycle. There were two constraints:  

After lot of thought, we identified cushions, bottle bricks and coasters for our products. All of these products were easy to make, no skill required and could be used anywhere.

Initially, it was difficult to get the women to segregate the plastic wrappers or get them to clean it. But when they saw revenue out of the sales, they started to understand its value.  

Women who used to burn or throw the waste, started collecting them.  They would keep it safe until our product making workshops. We saw them even picking up waste from the streets. Cleaning them became easy. The value of waste changed.  Waste became opportunities.

Soon our efforts reached over 12 villages and over 100 women. We made hundreds of these cushions to trekkers. Trekkers were buying them happily. The village women wanted to up their production!

On the other hand the bottle bricks were another big hit. We started using the bottle bricks to make benches, shelves, and a lot of utility products for the use of villages themselves.

All of this resulted in lesser waste going to landfills. I saw the same kid making bottle bricks with the wrapper instead of throwing it down.  The streets of these villages were getting visibly cleaner.

A recent testament to our efforts was when the Block Development Officer of a remote village Bijenbari near Darjeeling got the entire villagers to make more than 4,000 bottle bricks to build a wall around his facility. He promised to build more infrastructure with the bottle bricks in the future. This is a wonderful example of a community was taking charge of their waste.  

The waste we upcycle is otherwise non-recyclable.  Three years ago, I have heard communities tell me that they needed dustbins, a person to collect their waste and someone to take down the waste.  Now, the very same people see other ways of handling waste — that cost almost nothing but can handle almost everything.

Earlier, when I researched for long term solutions — incinerators, pyrolysis machines and recycling plants seemed to be the solution.  These long term solutions seemed impossible to implement in these remote areas. It seemed like a dead end.

How Trekking Impacts Your Mind, Body, And Spirit

Two years ago, I was on a Himalayan trek to Chandrashila.

I reached the summit early enough to catch a brilliant sunrise as it snaked through the mountains bringing an entire Himalayan range alive.

Behind me, one by one, trekkers made it to the summit.

On that day at Chandrashila when almost everyone had come up, I turned my attention to the mountain views around me. Here were the greatest mountains of our country at my eye level. It is one of those views that stay in your mind for a very long time.

It must have been a good ten minutes when I was shaken out of my stupor. I could hear someone coming up from below. I was somewhat surprised. Whoever I had expected was at the summit. I quickly went to the edge to look down.

To my surprise, Sushila, a trekker who I had instructed to turn around was making her way to the summit. There was a reason why I had asked her to turn around. Sushila was absolutely unprepared and unfit for the trek. Yet, there she was, hardly 15-20 feet below, laboriously making her way to the summit.

When Sushila got to the summit she walked past me and went straight to the little shrine at the top. She stood there with folded hands in a deep prayer of gratitude. As I watched her from a distance I noticed tears streaming down her face. Little by little the tears turned to sobs and within minutes she was weeping uncontrollably. It took a friend on the trek to embrace her in a warm hug to calm her down.

Later that evening, back at camp, when we were reflecting on the trek, I brought up the topic with Sushila.

The emotions that Sushila had poured out at the summit had a deeper past. 

Susheela was in her mid-thirties, almost getting to her forties. She worked in a German company and was recently promoted to a project manager. 

Sushila did not think she was capable of being a project manager. She always thought of herself as someone who did routine jobs in the background. She was soft spoken, hardly drew attention to herself.

With her husband and kids, Sushila was the typical image of someone who was under confident with low self belief.

Climbing to the summit of Chandrashila had a profound effect on her.

Despite her unpreparedness, Sushila discovered that she had an inner resolve, an inner strength much beyond what she had imagined. The climb showed that she could overcome obstacles much larger than herself. And she could do it alone without anyone’s support.

The climb to Chandrashila changed her mind in an irreversible way. Sushila discovered a new person within her. The trek filled her mind with positivity that no amount of pep talk or counselling could. The positivity stayed for long. She returned to work a changed person.

Sushila’s story is not a stray incident. We see these stories unfolding before us everyday.

I can say this with some authority because we run Indiahikes, India’s largest trekking organisation. Around 20,000 people trek with us every year. This large number of people trekking gives us repeated confirmation of studies that scientists have been doing for quite some time.

Trekking impacts our mind, body and spirit. It does so far deeper than we imagine.

On a trek, without the distractions of our regular world, the mind automatically starts to feel better. Even if we want to, there is nothing to distract us. It is just us and nature.

We are constantly looking at picture-perfect sceneries — mountains and hills, jungles and forests, flowers and birds, snow, clear streams, rivers and waterfalls, sunrises and sunsets, moon rises and stars.

Every hour on the trek these constant positive images are around us.

Over days, this constant immersion in positivity removes negative thoughts (actually any thoughts) from our minds. We even forget what day and time it is. It is almost miraculous what it does to our minds.

It has an immediate calming effect. The buzz that is in our heads begin to fade away. Our nerves start soothing. Laughter flows easily. There is a spring in our step.

There is a science behind these feelings. It is to do with hormones.

When we trek, our body releases large doses of endorphins, the hormone that makes us happy. Added to that there is a boost of serotonin that relaxes us. We get strong doses of Dopamine (which makes us feel accomplished, it triggers our reward centres). And there’s also a good amount of oxytocin (that gives us a sense of tranquility and love).

These hormones make us feel good, calm, connected, happy and energised.

The idea that nature helps our mental state goes back hundreds of years if not thousands. Yet, in the modern world, we ignore this.

One hour of trekking in the Himalayas can burn between 450 and 550 calories from your body. Imagine what a six-hour trek can do – which is our usual trek duration. I have seen on a 5-day trek trekkers usually lose between 3-4 kgs of their body weight. Suddenly, they are looking leaner, fitter and better toned.

But there is more to trekking than weight loss.

Trekking uphill is a lot like stair climbing or doing lunges. You are working on your glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves. When you do this over and over again your muscles get strengthened.

Your abs and lower back muscles are constantly working. If you are carrying a backpack, then it is even better. It is weight resistance training. This workout is building your core.

It gets better when we are descending. Against the force of gravity, your glutes and quads have to do slow controlled work. It is heavy work but the benefits are enormous. The body toning that you get is terrific.

Trekking is never like walking on a road. You are constantly navigating the terrain, making micro adjustments every second and minute. No two steps are the same.

Scientists say that building your core strength is essential for a longer, fitter body. Core strength leads to better balance and stability. On a trek, you are constantly making conscious and unconscious movements to keep your body balanced and stable. Your core is getting stronger.

At the end of the trek, almost everyone feels stronger, yet nimble and light-footed.
