In a previous article about sun damage at high altitudes, I touched upon the importance of wearing sunglasses when trekking in the snow. But in doing so, I realised that I had left out one group of trekkers: those who wear eyeglasses/spectacles.

In this article, I will share how people who wear contact lenses or eyeglasses can protect their eyes from UV damage on high-altitude treks.

But first, let’s have a quick recap of why you need to wear sunglasses on a high-altitude trek, especially when trekking in the snow:

Our eyes are prone to sunburns as much as our skin is. The sunburn of the eye is called photokeratitis (also called snow blindness). This condition is caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays, a component of sunlight. Too much UV exposure can damage the eye’s cornea and cause a burning, gritty sensation in the eyes and temporary blindness.

Now, snow is a very reflective surface. This means that it is very efficient at reflecting UV rays. When you trek in the snow, your eyes are constantly bombarded by these UV rays, putting you at a high risk of snow blindness.

So we know that we need sunglasses when trekking in snow. People who don’t wear spectacles (or are contact lens users) can simply put on UV-protected sunglasses. But what are the options available for bespectacled trekkers? Let’s have a look.

Sunglasses over spectacles

There are a few options for people who use spectacles to protect their eyes from UV rays:

This is an old hack in the books of many trekkers. Indiahikes in-house doctor Sreelakshmi went with this style on her Kashmir Great Lakes trek. “I carried my contact lenses with me but it was too much of a hassle to keep wearing and removing them daily. In the end, I just ended up wearing sunglasses over my spectacles. Although it was a bit tight around my ears and nose, it was not that big of an issue. I was able to complete the whole trek quite comfortably”.

Sunglasses with power lenses

Custom-made sunglasses with corrective power are the most comfortable option for trekkers with spectacles. However, such custom sunglasses are expensive, costing anywhere between Rs 3000 to Rs 7,000 for a good frame with scratch resistance. 

Frankly, we don’t recommend this unless you’re trekking in snow 7-8 times a year. If you’re trekking just once a year or so, this is not an economical option.

Clip-ons over prescription glasses

Clip-on glasses are glasses that you can attach on top of your regular spectacles. They do a pretty decent job and can be attached or removed easily. Clip-on glasses are a much more economical alternative to custom sunglasses with power.

Clip-on glasses are available easily in most trekking stores. Additionally, you can also find clip-ons in local spectacle shops easily. Check this out at Decathlon.

Fit-over-sunglasses

Fit-over sunglasses work on the same idea as clip-on glasses but instead of fixing only a set of lenses over your spectacles, fit-over sunglasses are whole sunglasses that you wear on top of the spectacles.

They look like regular sunglasses but are built like a light-weight shell so that they can fit snugly over most styles of spectacles.

One of our trekkers who is a regular user of these fit-over sunglasses had brought one to our Bangalore office. We tried it out ourselves and the sunglasses fit comfortably over our spectacles. Those were so comfortable that we didn’t notice that we were wearing another set of glasses over our spectacles.

Photochromic lenses

Photochromic glasses are spectacles that can transition from clear glass to dark shades that are anti-glare, depending on exposure to the sun. However, there are some things that you must consider before using these glasses on a trek:

Ensure that you get these lenses in a full-frame spectacle. Frameless glasses are fragile and can easily break on a trek.

Because photochromic lenses change colour automatically depending on light exposure, some people find it uncomfortable to use.

These types of lenses are expensive and might not be worth spending your money on.

There are a good number of eye protection options available for bespectacled trekkers. From our experience, fit-over and clip-on sunglasses are affordable and work pretty well. However, fit-over sunglasses should be preferred in snow conditions since they can cut off the side glare which a clip-on lens will not be able to do.

If you wear glasses, your best option is to get clip-on sunglasses. It is hassle-free and economical. 

However, if you’re a trekker who is in snow several times a year, then you could go for sunglasses that are tuned to your power. That’s the most convenient option.

How To Use Sunglasses With Spectacles

I‘ve been trekking for many years. While trekking DIY style, that is cooking, navigating and camping on my own, I’ve noticed cooking to be the biggest issue on a trek. We usually carry butane burners with us. However, these butane burners are very difficult to acquire in our country and generally have to be imported. 

This is one of the reasons why trekking has not grown in India — cooking on treks is not easy. But recently, I came across this Multi Gas Canister by Sree LPG. One of the largest LPG companies in India, they have come up with these canisters of butane gas for trekkers.

I took this on my recent Gidara Bugyal trek to test it out and oh my, am I impressed! Our trek was a five day expedition at the onset of winter. We trekked to a very high altitude of 14,000 feet. There were vast atmospheric pressure changes here. The temperature was at sub-zero almost everyday.

Despite these settings, I found the Sree LPG canister and burner better than imported butane gas cylinders. I found its performance quite astonishing. And this is what I am going to talk about here. 

Let’s take a quick look at the pros and cons before we dive deeper.

Pros                                                                          

Excellent cooking speed (<20 mins) at high altitudes

Takes x2-2.5 longer to cook at very high altitudes (above 11,000 ft)

It was extremely cold on my trek. So, I wanted to see how the canister and burner function in such severe weather. 

Up till about 11,000 feet the burner works beautifully. To give you an idea, to boil two litres of water, it takes only 6 minutes. But at high-altitude, when we were at 13,500 feet (and the temperature was below -2°C), it took us about 12 to 15 minutes to boil that same amount of water.

Essentially, it takes maybe 2-2.5 times longer when you’re cooking at high altitudes, especially in the middle of the winter. In several camps, the water was completely frozen and we had to melt snow to get water. 

Yet, the Sree LPG canister and burner work much better than other imported ones.

I loved how efficient the gas canisters were. For this entire trek of five days, for five people, we required four of these canisters. We were cooking three meals a day, with copious amounts of hot water and chai in between. So you can imagine how efficient it is. 

Given that we were in very high altitudes with low atmospheric pressure, extremely cold temperatures, five of us used up only four canisters!

The Multi Gas canister is about 220 grams (including the pouch), which is extremely lightweight. The stove weighs similarly, at  around 250 grams. 

This apparatus is extremely lightweight. You won’t feel its weight while trekking. This was a pleasant change after the butane cylinders I have carried in the past. Those would start to feel heavy after some time.

The stove has wings to put the vessel on top of it and legs at its bottom which work as a stand.

Fold the wings inwards. It works beautifully on its own, so you don’t have to do much.

And that’s it! In less than a minute I can put it in any corner of my sleeping bag and I’m done with it. 

The canisters come with a very easy-to-open cap and nozzle. You just have to open the cap and nozzle before you attach it to the burner. It comes with an instruction manual as well. 

➤ Innovative Burner – Efficient and Easy to Ignite

The biggest innovation here is not in the gas, but in this burner. It is the burner that creates efficiency in actually using the gas, spreading it out, keeping it at the right temperature as well as putting on the required flow. Efficiency is the secret of any good camping stove. 

One of the biggest problems I have always faced while using butane cylinders and stoves, is lighting them. I have had to carry a flint or matchboxes with me. But at times, when they get wet or cold, it becomes impossible to light them – and it’s always been a miserable process. 

But this innovation, which Sree LPG has brought in, is something I really like. The burner has an attachment to fit the canister onto. The canister fits smoothly – it hardly took me 20 seconds. This way, you can easily light the burner.

Once the canister is fit into the burner, all you have to do is turn the burner knob on, pull the metal plate down and voila! It ignites. To switch it off, turn the knob off and it’s done. I carried out this whole process in less than 30 seconds – and that’s the beauty of the innovation. 

It is meant for DIY (Do It Yourself) trekkers, who go in a group of friends or on their own. No matter where you’re trekking in the country – the Sahyadris or the Himalayas, or some place else – this is a godsent gift. And that is because it can make you independent.

With this set up, you can be absolutely versatile with your cooking. You don’t have to worry about it anymore. Nowadays, a lot of food premixes are available in the market. You just have to take them and start cooking. All you need is this pair of burner and canister, one vessel and that’s it. 

And with that, you are a completely independent DIY trekker!

One of the biggest concerns trekkers have is whether the water they are drinking on a trek is clean. And it’s a legitimate question. Not everybody is trekking in the middle of the Himalayas, where you get sparkling clean water. In fact, even in the Himalayas, we don’t always get clean water. Trails have gotten crowded; there are cattle grazing on the trails; villages and dhabas have sprung up. So not all water is clean.

Closer to home, even if I’m trekking around my area, I sometimes have to go to a muddy pool of water and that is the only water source I have. So water is a very big issue for any trekker.

The bottle is not completely leak-proof. If kept upside down or in a lying position in your tent, it could leak a few drops.

Silicone material cannot withstand very hot water. So if you’re on a trek and want to drink hot water, it will have to wait. 

How the Paany Water Purification System Works

The Paany Water Filter Bottle has a two stage filtration. The first is a filter, which you see when you open the lid. The hollow fiber microfiltration technology has many layers of Polysulfone membrane, which is what does most of the filtration work. 

In addition to this, there is a second carbon filter, which improves the taste of the water, aside from its own additional filtration. 

The filtration is based on an outside-in filtration, where contaminants are retained on the outside of the fibers and only pure water flows through the hollow-fiber center.

Paany Water Filter Bottle Review: A Water Purifying Bottle For Trekkers and Travellers

Trekking poles are very important when it comes to trekking. They make your trek experience safe and comfortable. They act as a third leg, keeping you balanced in tricky terrain and descents. Poles also help you maintain a steady rhythm while walking.

I have noticed that many trekkers think you should use trekking poles only when you have an injury. That is a major myth. The truth is you are likely to get injured, especially in the knees, if you don’t use a trekking pole.

In fact, I strongly recommend that you always use two trekking poles rather than one.

And just like all other trekking gear, poles have to be maintained well too. Here are a few easy things you can do to make them last you several treks.

Your trekking pole has two knobs for adjusting its height. When you open it before the trek, keep each section of the pole in equal height.

I have seen many trekkers open only one portion of their trekking poles, either the middle or bottom. If you do this, the entire load is only on the open section of the pole, making it more susceptible to bending or breaking.

To avoid this, always make sure that the bottom and middle parts of the trekking pole are of equal height.

I’d also suggest you watch this video to know how to use a trekking pole while on your trek.

This is the simplest thing you can do to keep your trek pole safe. Use your trekking pole only for what it is made for – trekking.

Don’t play around with it. Don’t dig holes in the ground, or hit snow. Don’t play-fight with it. It is not a lightsaber!

I have seen many trekkers do everything I have mentioned above often. I have also seen how quickly it causes scratches and bends on their trekking poles.

3. Fold your trekking poles every day after the trek

After every day’s trek, take the time to fold your trekking poles when you get to your campsite. It hardly takes a minute.

I’ve seen that trekkers usually leave their poles open outside their tents, exposing them to rain, snow, and cold moist winds at night. This makes trekking poles rust quickly, and also makes them stiff. This reduces the life of the pole immensely.

I suggest you keep them folded (with the rubber cap on) inside your tent. If left outside or on the ground, they may get stepped on by accident and break.

4. Use the trekking pole cap when on a muddy or rocky trail

Your trekking pole has a removable pole cap that covers the tungsten tip. If walking through rocky trails, make sure that the cap is in place. And remove the snow basket and keep it safely.

The tungsten tip is meant for soft surfaces and snow basket is meant only for snowy terrain. If you don’t use your pole cap, it will get damaged and not work well in snow and muddy trails.

If you lose your pole caps (they are small), you can always buy new ones before your trek. They don’t cost a lot.

5. Pack your trekking poles properly while traveling

Trekking poles are very easily damageable when travelling. So make sure to pack them well.

Fold your poles properly. Remove the snow basket and keep it separately. Put on the pole caps. I would suggest you wrap your trekking poles with newspaper and/ or bubble wrap.

If you are travelling by plane and checking it in, ensure to inform the airline staff to add a ‘Fragile’ tag to your trekking pole.

When you get home, take some time to clean your trekking poles before storage. First, open out your trekking pole to full length. Clean out all the dirt and mud with moist towel. Let it dry out.

Once dry, apply any lubricant, like grease or oil, on every screw of the trekking pole. Fold it again and store it in a dry place.

I recommend you apply lubricant on all the screws once a month. This will prevent the formation of rust and keep your poles safe.

These simple steps will ensure that your trekking poles remain in good condition for a long time.

6 Tips To Preserve Your Trekking Pole

Why these waterproof socks are nothing less than miraculous

We all know that trekking in the snow is fun. The not-so-fun part is when the snow gets into your shoes. In 3-4 hours of walking on snow, the water starts to seep in through the fabric of the shoe to its inner layer, wetting your socks and eventually your feet. That’s when the misery starts.

Why These Waterproof Socks Are A Must-Have For Trekkers

Drones have completely changed the way we look at landscape photography and videography. They are gaining popularity among photographers because of their ability to shoot from a bird’s eye view. Imagine seeing the Himalayas, or any natural wonder from an aerial perspective; stunning!

Though mountains offer a brilliant opportunity to shoot breathtaking pictures and videos, they are still not a photographer’s favourite destination for drones. Why? Simply because trekking to high altitudes and filming on drone is not easy.

To fly a drone at high altitudes, you need to be creative. Here, you operate under high physical and mental strain. You must also know how to keep the drone safe from rain, snow, dust, debris, and extremely harsh winds.

Drones are fragile. This makes it tricky to carry and fly them on treks. If you own a drone or are planning to buy and use one, these basic pointers will help. 

This can make or break your plans. Make sure you carry only the required equipment. Don’t add unnecessary weight. It comes in the way while handling other equipment. Carry a light and shockproof case too. 

Drone batteries discharge quickly in cold temperatures. So, carry backup batteries and keep them warm by packing them separately, maybe wrap them in woollen socks. This ensures proper insulation.

If available, pack a pair of extra propellers as well. They might get bent or damaged during transit.

Do not count on finding electricity at all the Indiahikes base camps. In remote villages situated at a high altitude, electricity is erratic. And voltage fluctuations make it difficult to charge your drone. So, charge your drone batteries beforehand. You could also charge them on the way to the base camp when you stop for breakfast or lunch. 

Don’t lug your chargers all the way up on a trek. I usually leave my charging hub at the base camp just so I’m not carrying unnecessary weight. Remember, every gram counts. 

Never offload your drone case, even if it is empty. It could get damaged while being transported on a mule.

Here are some things you must do before flying your drone on the trek –

1. Compliance with DGCA and local guidelines

Treks like Kashmir Great Lakes go close to the international border via army checkpoints. Here, it is important to get relevant permissions for using the drone. As rules and guidelines are regularly updated, check for the latest updates on permissions required.

Every minute counts when you have limited drone batteries. This calls for judicious planning. Plan your shots in advance. It saves a lot of battery.

Following points can help with this planning: 

Visualise your shots using Google Earth Pro. 

Get an idea of the altitudes and terrain. 

Speak to your Trek Leaders and trek guides about viewpoints, and other vantage points from where you can shoot a video. 

Drones can fly and transmit footage to a range of 8 kms. But try to stay well within the range limit since larger distances increase the chance of crashing a drone into rocks or trees. In the mountains, recovering a lost drone is almost impossible. So, keep your drone in the line of sight.

The Himalayas are home to hundreds of species of birds. Eagles are the most common. Drones often provoke birds, who tend to chase and attack the equipment. 

Shift your drone to sport mode on the remote. Then increase the altitude (birds cannot gain altitude as quickly as they can lose it by gliding down) and get the drone back as soon as possible.

However, while sport mode increases the responsiveness of the drone, it disables the obstacle sensors. So, be extremely cautious while shifting modes. This also reiterates the importance of flying in the line of sight. Till now I have carried my drone to three Himalayan treks. And I assure you that filming possibilities with a drone are countless, all you need to do is develop your skill and creativity. 

Drones perform well in the city by delivering close to what’s expected. But it isn’t so on the treks because the air at higher altitudes is thinner. To compensate for this change in atmospheric atmosphere, drones utilize juice from the battery. This  substantially reduces the flight time.

Apart from the thin air,  cold temperatures at high altitudes also drain the battery even when the drones are simply idle. 

1. Use a case with thick and tight foam stencils. Tightly pack the batteries into this case.

2. Wrap your batteries in a woollen sock, and store the wrapped batteries in an airtight box. This keeps the battery at a constant inner temperature and insulated from the cold temperature at high altitudes.
