You can get the best of the gear for your trek. But if you don’t have a good and sturdy backpack, will any of it be of value?

A good backpack is one of the most essential items on a trek. Therefore, having a backpack that is spacious, has good back support, and good material is important.

Picking your backpack is an important decision. It stays with you for a long time. It’s your best friend on a trek. That is why, I’m impressed with the new explore 55 backpack from Adventure Worx. I would consider it to be at a similar level with some of the best backpacks I’ve used. 

It’s made in Bangalore, India. I’m proud that such a product is made in our country. That too, of such high quality. I’m glad to see that there are companies in India creating equipment for trekkers with such fine detail.

It really impressed me and I’m glad I got to try it out on a Himalayan trek. 

Why I Liked Using the Adventure Worx Xplore 55 Backpack

One of the major reasons I liked using this backpack is because of the structure. It has incredible balance and stability. In addition, it maintains an excellent shape when it’s full.

The structure of the backpack is very logical. There are two frames running along the bag. And, there’s a lovely hourglass shape to them. 

It ideally takes the weight from the top. Then, it concentrates on the middle and spreads out at the bottom. It’s an important shape for a stable trek. It keeps the weight balanced and doesn’t strain your back either.

I tested it out on an 8-day Himalayan trek and the results were brilliant! The structure and shape retained throughout the trek. It gave me adequate back support and offered great space. I would really recommend this backpack for a Himalayan trek. 

➤ Ventilation & Compartments: Rating: 5/5 

This backpack has a really good ventilator mesh. It prevented me from having a sweaty back throughout the trek. Even during long walks, my back stayed dry. 

Adventure Worx has nailed the compartments perfectly. The backpack has standard compartments as expected in any modern backpack. But this one is really spacious. The top hood has an ample amount of room. There is generous space in the inner flap too. 

I thought that the water bottle holder was perfect. It allowed my water bottle to sit tight without slipping out even once. Not like usual backpacks, which have the flap lower. It felt sturdy and easily reachable too.

There are a couple of added compression straps for the water bottle too. It holds the bottle in place and prevents it from falling. 

The waistband has lovely pockets. I could easily fit in my GPS tracker and mobile phone. It was easy to pull it out whenever I wanted to click pictures. 

On the front side, there is an added compartment for emergency items. I found that very accessible too. 

The Adventure Worx backpack has loads of space inside. I could fit my sleeping bag at the top and clothes at the bottom and it still didn’t feel overpacked. I think the backpack scored really well on inner space. 

➤ Straps, buckles, and belts: Rating: 4.5/5

The straps have the right amount of padding–not too thick or too thin. It didn’t cut through the shoulders or feel painful during the trek.

The waistband, too, has the right amount of padding. It fit quite well and didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. 

The strap to lift the backpack has good material and feels decently sturdy. The buckles all over the backpack are of superior quality and not easily breakable. 

However, there are some downsides in this aspect. I thought that the strap to lift the backpack isn’t as strong. It could have another layer of stitching.

I also didn’t like the width of the strap on the compression straps. It didn’t feel wide enough. 

I think the straps could be marginally wider everywhere. 

The basic design of the backpack is excellent. It has a bright orange/yellow colour and looks good. The backpack is really attractive and draws a lot of attention on a trek. 

I thought there could be some improvements here as well. While everything else is high quality, the graphics on the backpack aren’t as good. 

There could be more detailing on the main graphic in the front. 

The black colour on the sides doesn’t really go well with the yellow/orange. Grey panelling on the sides would blend better with the yellow/orange.

The price of the Adventure Worx Xplore 55 Backpack is comparable to any other backpack. I wouldn’t say it is much higher or lower.

There are very few backpacks that offer good space, good support, and balance. But, at the same time, having an attractive backpack is really rare. 

You can check off all these things in the Adventure Worx Xplore 55 Backpack. Plus, you get a premium design and material here. 

So at around Rs 5,600, I thought it was normally priced. In fact, I thought it was cheaper than some standard ones. 

The Adventure Worx Xplore 55 backpack is a very well designed backpack. It’s crafted with thoughtful attention and detail. There are some minor issues, but they won’t bother you much. 

All in all, it’s a perfect buy for a trekker. I would really endorse this backpack. The comfort, space, design, and compartments are great and made my trek experience really efficient. 

Because it’s made in our own country, I feel good and proud to carry it along.

It’s an excellent backpack to carry on higher altitude treks. Treks like Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Bali Pass or Kedartal will put this backpack to good use. It will allow you to have a seamless experience even if your backpack is loaded.

Adventure Worx Xplore 55 Backpack Review

Trekking and mountaineering are expensive sports. In fact, the biggest cost factor is the good quality gear they require.

In my experience, good gear is important to have a problem-free trek. If you use sub-standard or damaged gear, you’re more susceptible to injuries.

Most trekkers consider buying trek gear as an investment. This is the average price list of commonly required gear:

It’s important to know how to maintain your expensive trekking gear. If done well, these items can last for a long time. You don’t want to keep buying gear before every trek.

I have put together this series of articles on how to maintain your trek gear, to help you out.

Let’s start with one of the most important ones — your backpack.

Your backpack is almost like your best friend during a trek. It carries all your belongings and protects them from rain and snow. It evenly distributes the load on your body to avoid stressing any muscles or joints. It literally has your back!

I always make sure to take good care of my backpack. I will share some simple hacks to increase the life of your backpack.

1. Store your backpack with the back-side up

The most important part of your backpack is its back-padding and shoulder belt. These two parts are in constant touch with your body. They absorb movement friction and shock.

Without good padding, you will experience severe shoulder ache when you wear your backpack. So these two parts need to be taken care of well.

I have seen a lot of trekkers keep their backpack the wrong way as soon as they reach the campsite. Exhausted from the day’s trek, they are quick to remove the backpack and keep it with the back-padding side on the ground!

This will damage the back-padding. Stones scrape its texture. Dirt enters its porous surface making it harder to clean. There will also be more pressure with the weight pressing down on the padding.

The right way to keep a backpack is with its front face lying on the floor. Or if you want it standing, keep the front part leaning against the wall or tent.

When you get back home from your trek, store your backpack separately. I’ve noticed how many people keep it at the bottom of their wardrobe and forget all about it until their next trek. By which time it gets buried under a pile of clothes and other stuff. This will reduce the life of your backpack quickly!

The minute you offload your backpack, you lose control of how it is handled.

Porters or mules carry several bags at the same time. Inevitably, they end up carrying the bags in an inappropriate manner. They tie up several bags together using ropes, crushing many bags together.

I have seen mules bumping into rocks along the trail. They are completely oblivious to tree branches scratching away on the bags’ surfaces. Even if porters cover all the bags with a sheet, they won’t be able to keep an eye on it at all times. There will still be substantial damage.

Besides, by the sheer nature of tightly tying several bags together, the back-padding will be damaged irreversibly.

So instead of offloading, I strongly suggest you prepare yourself physically to carry your own backpack. While preparing for your trek, practise carrying your backpack and climbing stairs.

3. Always use a rain cover, even when it’s sunny

Put on a rain cover on your backpack every day of your trek. No matter what the weather  is — sunny, raining or snowing.

Every backpack has a water repellent layer. This layer will get damaged if it’s exposed to direct sunlight over long duration of time.

Rain covers also provide additional protection against invasive branches and thorns in forest trails.

I have seen that backpacks are more prone to damage during transport, than when on a trek.

When travelling by buses or cars, your backpacks are tied and loaded on top of the vehicle. Most mountain roads are dusty and bumpy. Imagine the damage this can do to your backpack padding!

I recommend you use two rain covers during transportation — one on the front, and one on the back to protect the padding. Otherwise the back padding may get dirty and tear easily.

5. Loosen or detach your shoulder strap when you store it

The curvature of your shoulder strap and hip strap is designed to snugly fit against your body. This makes it more comfortable to carry a heavy load for longer periods of time.

When you use your backpack for several days together, this curve gets strained. So the minute you get home, loosen the shoulder strap and hip strap. This ensures that the curve of the shoulder belt doesn’t get damaged easily and lasts longer.

If you have a backpack with a detachable shoulder strap, you can remove it altogether.

6. Follow this procedure to clean your backpack

I suggest you gently clean your backpack after every trek. This reduces the buildup of dirt over time, which will be harder to clean.

– Before washing, remove the frames (if they are removable).

– Use a cotton or soft cloth for washing. Refrain from using a hard brush, or vigorous rubbing.

– Do not use hard detergents. This will damage its water repellent membrane.

I always use Nikwax Cleaners. These are specifically designed for cleaning waterproof mountaineering gear.  You can get it online for around Rs.1,700 – Rs.2,200. It’s a worthy investment for cleaning all your gear.

After washing, dry it in direct sunlight. But don’t leave it out for a long time lest it gets damaged. 2-3 hours should be enough.

6 Tips to Increase the Life of Your Backpack

Understanding the anatomy of the backpack is important. It helps you choose one based on your needs. Often, I see trekkers buying without judging them on key parameters. It’s only during/after the trek that they realise what could have been better about it.

In this article, I’m putting down the key parts of a backpack that most good trekking backpacks have. I’ve also indicated what each of their uses is. So look out for these parts if you’re buying one.

This is where you keep things that you need to access quickly. Sunscreens, sunglasses, pocket guides, books, maps. This usually comes with a zip facing the back. Packing the top pocket is crucial. It gives shape to the backpack and helps it to balance. 

This is on the inside of the top compartment. Keep your batteries, headlamps, camera parts, power banks, and documents here.

This needs to be sturdy and strong. Most airline handlers grab backpacks by this handle and throw your backpack around. If it does not have this, then they will grab what comes next, which is usually the strings near the upper compartment. Your backpack could do with insurance if that’s the case. 

These straps are often ignored at their peril. These little busters help shift the load of the backpack to the right parts of your body. Tighten or loosen them to make the bag sit snugly on your body. Without these, don’t buy one. They are that important. 

These are contoured in a boomerang shape. They hold firm and have padding. They never bend over your fingers. Pay close attention to this. Without the shape and the padding, don’t go near the backpack. These take the entire load of the backpack. 

These keep the shoulder straps in place. They decide how the backpack sits. Too loose, it slides towards your bottom. Too tight and the shoulder straps bite through your shoulders. 

Tip: always readjust the shoulder strap adjusters after the first day’s trek. It takes a day for them to settle to the height and volume of the bag. 

One of the least used straps by trekkers, yet very useful. They keep things together inside the backpack. These are the straps that keep them in shape, which, when you trek, is very critical. An out of shape backpack is a hazard to trekking. This keeps its balance in place.

Again, a load sharing strap that is rarely used by trekkers. Sternum straps ease the pressure on your shoulders. Without the sternum straps, a backpack can feel like a ton. With one, it magically spreads out. Use them. 

Terrific utility space to keep quickly needed stuff. Great for gloves, sunglasses, umbrellas, balaclavas, scarfs, medicine kits. Don’t overload or bulge the side pockets. It can affect the balance of the backpack. 

These help in reducing the load from your shoulders by almost 80%. It is the greatest suspension device in your backpack. Hip belts not only transfer the weight of the bag to your hip, the burden of carrying the load moves to your legs as well. Hip belts are strictly not meant to hang down on your legs.

Modern backpacks have now added hip pouches to keep quickly accessible stuff. Useful to keep pen knives, matchboxes, pens, candies, chargers. 

This connects the hip belts to the main body of the backpack. It helps to adjust the load of the backpack to the hips.  

Any backpack worth its salt will need to come with a mesh-like ventilation system. It prevents your back from sweating, with air circulating around. 

This is the greatest asset for your spine. It keeps your spine straight, gives it cushion and prevents injury. The lumbar design makes a big difference. Avoid anything that is too spongy — those tend to push against your spine. Lumbar pads are another vital part of backpack design.

Side pockets and strap details of a trekking backpack

Traditionally this is where sleeping bags were kept. With organised trekking, use this space to keep your rain jackets, floaters, soiled clothes, liners. 

Generally not used much by trekkers. Seasoned trekkers use them to hang ice axes or tools like carabiners. Definitely not meant to hang floaters or water bottles. Nothing must dangle from your bag. 

For keeping water bottles or sundry accessories. Especially useful if you don’t like using hydration packs and need to dig into your water bottle. A backpack without an accessories pouch is almost useless. Also useful to keep litter, wrappers. 

Any decent backpack must come with its own rain cover. They are attached to the inside of the pouch so that they don’t get lost and it slides easily over the entire backpack. 

This is usually inside the middle of the backpack at the back. This is where you keep your hydration pack. There is usually a slit on the top for the nozzle to pass through. There’s usually also another pouch in front of the hydration pouch to keep maps or any important documents like a passport.

Getting a good bag is important to take off the load from your back and shoulders. An improper backpack can quickly ruin your experience of a trek. Get it right and you will enjoy your trek to the maximum.

Understand These 18 Parts of a Backpack Before Buying One

Buying a backpack that suits you is almost as important as buying a shoe that suits you. Your backpack is your companion throughout your trek. It’s either going to make your trek a pleasurable one or is going to be a burden on you. To make sure you buy the right kind of backpack, here are some tips.

What capacity of the backpack should you go for?

The first thing to do is consider the total weight you are going to carry. This will depend upon the duration of the trek. Are you going for a day trek without overnight camping? Or are you camping for multiple days? Are you planning to take your backpack for summit climbs and difficult terrains that require carrying more gear?

One-day treks can be done with day packs. They are lightweight, sturdy enough to carry 5 kg of load. Always look for the one with a hip belt to distribute the weight evenly. They come in 20 to 30 L (litre) sizes. You can use such a backpack on short weekend treks or day treks in the Western Ghats.

These treks require backpacks with greater capacity, like 40, 50 and 60 L. These bags can carry gear ranging from 8 to 13 kg. They come with wider straps and hip belts to help you distribute weight evenly and minimize discomfort. A 40 – 50 L backpack may suffice for a weekend trek. A trek up that’s around five days long can be done with a 60 L backpack.

These backpacks are ideal for treks which are longer than a day or two and up to a week. For example, you can buy such backpacks for treks like – Hampta Pass, Valley of Flowers, Kashmir Great Lakes and Tarsar Marsar.

Trek that are more than a week long, such as the Rupin Pass Trek, Har Ki Dun Trek and Goechala Trek will require you to carry more load. Hence, they require more durable backpacks that can carry extra heavy loads. Expedition Backpacks come in various sizes of 70, 80, 90 L and can carry loads ranging from 15 to 30 kg.

They have a durable internal frame made of aluminium or stainless steel. This also adds to the weight. The trade-off over weight and durability is based on the use of the backpack. Go for light frame backpacks for short and easy treks. For long and difficult treks, go for durable backpacks.

How do you choose the right backpack for your height?

Once you have decided which type of backpack to buy, get your torso measured. Backpacks these days come with specifically designed sizes, based on different body sizes. Take a measuring tape and start measuring from the back of your neck, right where you feel a prominent vertebra protruding out, and where your shoulders meet your neck.

Put your hands on your hips and feel the top of the hip bone. Spread your thumbs out towards your spine. Have someone measure this imaginary line between your thumbs. This will give you your torso length. The following chart will help you in selecting the right size.

1. Try your backpack and inspect its straps by loosening them

Start with the hip belt. The top of your hips should be anywhere from the middle to the top of the waist belt. Ensure you have at least one inch of adjustment to either tighten or loosen the belt.  Now, test the lower shoulder belts by pulling them up. Look for a good consistent curve of this strap around your shoulder front to back. Inspect how wide the shoulder straps are across the chest.

Now load the straps on top of your shoulder straps. You can adjust the angle of these straps as they come off the shoulder straps. An ideal angle would be 45 degrees. Keep the angle in between 25 to 60 degree at all times. You can always adjust these straps while trekking uphill or downhill to help you be more comfortable with your backpack.

It’s always a good idea to test the backpack with some weight before buying it. You won’t be trekking with an empty backpack, therefore test the backpack with weight and see if you’re comfortable with the way the backpack distributes the weight.

3. Inspect the features and align them with your needs

Look for features such as a backpack with lightweight material, a compartment for a hydration pack, better ventilation system, more compartments for keeping essential gear.

How to Choose the Right Backpack for a Trek

Many trekkers feel that carrying a trekking backpack is difficult. But the fact of the matter is that carrying a backpack is not as difficult as it is made to be.

Backpacks these days are so designed that the weight is distributed across your hips and shoulders (especially if you are carrying an internal frame backpack, as most of you will). It is the hip that is actually doing most of the lifting. Hips are the strongest bones of your body and can carry a lot more than the 8 – 9 kg of your backpack.

What causes discomfort while carrying a backpack

It is a common sight to see trekkers throw down their backpack the moment they reach camp grimacing in pain around their shoulders. The reality is it is not the weight of the backpack that has caused this soreness. The cause of the soreness is the build up of lactic acid in the muscles.

This is a result of our breathing faster than usual and less oxygen traveling to the compressed muscles. When you take off your backpack and relax your muscles, the lactic acid disperses in the blood stream and the soreness disappears. Most trekkers are unaware of this, but even carrying a small backpack for 5 – 6 hours causes this compression of muscles and soreness.

Try shoulder rotations for better blood circulation  

Learning how to disperse the lactic acid helps in returning to normalcy quicker. An easy way to do this is to exercise your shoulder muscles frequently during a trek. Though there are specific exercises for these, a simple rotatory movement of the shoulders helps in dispersing the lactic acid. Doing these exercises periodically goes a long way to make a trek pain free and enjoyable.

What will reduce the soreness most is learning how to pack and carry your backpack. I have often seen backpacks dangling lopsided from a trekker’s shoulders — this is a sure sign of approaching acute pain in a few hours. A backpack needs to fit you like a glove, so that the centre of gravity stays as close to the hips as possible.

For that you need to fasten your backpack in such a way that it fits snugly on your back, especially around the hips. Strap the backpack in such a way that if you jump up and down nothing wobbles — the backpack needs to feel like a part of your body.

Another backpack technique most trekkers miss out is on the use of the hip belts. It is something that keeps the backpack snug. Secure the belts around your waist in such a way that there is little gap between the backpack and your lower back.

Trekking upright is the best thing that you can do to reduce your soreness. While fitting your backpack snugly does this, use a trekking pole to ensure that you don’t stoop forward too much, especially when climbing uphill. This slight correction in the centre of gravity reduces your fatigue by over 30%.

Don’t offload — Carry Your Backpack Often

Trekkers carrying their own backpacks reduce the number of porters/mules hired on the trail. This means lesser energy consumed, lesser fuel burnt and lesser waste generated. Spending a few thousand extra on a porter does make a trek more luxurious but it greatly increases the ecological impact on the trail.

A backpack gives you access to your warm clothes or anything else in a hurry. Often there is a burst of rain or a long cloud cover that sweeps over the trail. The temperature plummets. Access to your warm clothes and rain gear is of utmost importance in such circumstances. Your backpack saves your day. I have often wondered at the number of times I have thanked my backpack in such situations.

There have been numerous times when I have had to fish out my knife or a medical kit. Without my backpack I would have been caught napping. Once, when I had to make a sudden camp overnight, it was the clothes in my backpack that kept me warm through the night. I also cannot forget forget the number of times I have used my backpack as a pillow to take a quick nap on a trail.

It is not difficult to carry your own backpack on a trek. The worst you feel is on the first day of the trek. But carrying your own backpack is practical and humanely the right thing to do.

5 Tips to Make Carrying Your Trekking Backpack Easy

I was getting ready for a quick 5-day trek when the Xplore 50 backpack came to our office for a review. I usually stick to my tried and tested Teton backpack but the sleek and compact Xplore 50 made me want to try it.

Xplore 50 seemed right for someone like me who wanted to carry their own backpack and yet not carry too much. The backpack looked feature-rich yet lightweight.

The Adventure Worx Xplore 50 Backpack comes with both top load and bottom load features.

On my first glance, the Explore 50 looked very attractive. Thanks to the bright green and black color mix. It looked hi-tech with its AerWire T back ventilation system.

I noticed the sturdy well-padded straps. They seemed comfortable

Best of all, I loved how light it felt. Adventure Worx mentions the backpack’s weight as 1.5 kg, which is a good weight for a backpack this size.

My small concern was if it could fit everything that I needed for my week-long outing in the mountains. I would soon find out.

The backpack has two compartments. The central body which is a top loader. The wider bottom part with a zip of its own. The two can be fused to make a single compartment too.

When I took it home and started packing, I was pleasantly surprised at how much it could hold. When the main body filled up, the bottom could easily backup to hold my bulky jacket. I chose to keep the two compartments separate because it made for logical partitioning and easy access.

Between the two partitions, I put in all my stuff for the exploration without breaking a sweat. The backpack still looked small enough to go into an airline cabin. Just what you need when you have to get out of the airport and hurry to catch the connecting train.

The backpack has two compartments and is very space efficient. Even after loading it to the full it still easily goes inside an airline’s overhead cabin.

Xplore 50 is a classic top loader with an integrated hood. This made packing in gears simple.It also made the backpack streamlined and well balanced. The roomy bottom compartment gives it a wide support base. The backpack I noticed, stands upright on its own when full.

Talking of support, I would score the Xplore 50 high. The straps and the hip support are comfortable with the right amount of padding.

The air vent mesh also adds to the comfort and load distribution. When I wore the backpack with the hip support on, I hardly felt the 9 kgs I was carrying. By the end of the 5 hour trek day, it almost felt like the backpack was an extension of me. And yes, the ventilation system did keep my back drier.

The backpack comes with the two compression straps with buckles on the side. If I am not using the lower compression strap, the buckle comes in handy to secure a water bottle in the open bottle pouch. I find this buckle very useful to prevent my bottle from falling off the open pouch. The backpack has a sternum strap, which has a whistle in the buckle. I don’t use the sternum strap much, but I think the whistle is a great idea, just in case you get lost in the jungle.

The Backpack has a AerWire T support for the back which is really comfortable.

For a compact backpack, the Xplore 50 goes all out to have lots of features.

Like I already mentioned, it is a top loader with an opening at the bottom too.

The backpack has a small pocket in front to keep things you need to access quickly like a map. There are pockets on the top outside and inside. I tend to keep my poncho, medical kit, and headlamp here. These are again things I may need to access on the trail.

There are two decent sized side pockets with zips and two open bottle holder pouches.

This generous addition of pockets ensured that I didn’t have to open my bag fully even inside the tent unless I was changing clothes.

I don’t use a hydration pack but its users have not been forgotten. There is a compartment for the pack and an outlet for the pipe.

The backpack has many pockets to manage all your belongings. Apart from that, it has space for a hydration pack as well.

There is only one issue that I have with the Xplore 50. Its body is made of ripstop nylon. While it makes it lightweight and good looking, I find the outer material to be a bit too flimsy. A trekking backpack has to go through a lot of grinds. It starts at the airport with baggage handlers. Then get hurled under the seats of a train or get loaded on the top of a tempo and finally get tied on to a mule if you decide to offload. I fear the material may not be able to stay strong without blemishes when it goes through all this.

Though the MRP reads Rs 5,999 on the label, I have seen it retailing at Rs 2,999 on Flipkart. Right now I see it available on a further discount at Rs 2,772 on Adventure Worx’s online store.

To conclude this review, I will say that the Xplore 50 is a comfortable, compact and good looking backpack with all features packed in. At a price range of just Rs 2,772 with all its rich features, the backpack is a steal.

I would especially recommend it to those who want to carry compact backpacks and carry it themselves.

This backpack is available for all our treks.

With 7 external pockets to carry all your gear, the Adventure Worx for Indiahikes backpack has a dreamlike suspension that enhances mobility and comfort while you carry heavier loads through your treks. We’ve worked extensively with Adventure Worx to make this perfect backpack.

1. Top-loading main compartment with fully padded contouring that promotes ventilation and upper body mobility.

2. Anti-Gravity, 3D suspended, ventilated mesh back panel that contours automatically to the body, according to load, providing outstanding fit.

3. Integrated rain-cover that protects your content from foul weather and rain.

4. Dual stretch meshed side pockets, zippered hip belt pockets, and large front stash pocket offers additional storage and organization.

5. Volume – 48 Litres, enough for an 8 day Himalayan trek.

1. The rental cost of Rs 390/- is for the full duration of the trek.

2. An extra refundable deposit of Rs.1000 (in cash) is charged at the base camp. This money will be returned once the backpack is returned at the last campsite.

3. The gear should be collected at the base camp.
