The trek starts from Raithal, a small hamlet that sits on the mountainside 40 km from Uttarkashi.

From the base camp, the trek immediately enters lovely mixed forests of oaks, maples, rhododendrons and pines. To see such a variety of trees in just one day is rare. No other trek that’s this short has so many trees packed in a day’s trail. And come winter, these forest floors are covered in snow. It’s simply a pleasure to trek through them.

But what lies further ahead can make you weak in your knees.

As soon as you exit the treeline, you enter the meadows of Dayara. The trails runs through the heart of these meadows. Behind you, you see striking views of Mt Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, John Lee and Bhagirathi. In the winters, the entire meadows is covered in a thick blanket of snow, thus giving it the tag of a Grand Snow Trek.

On your right, Mt Bandarpoonch begins to peek at you. As you climb higher, it unveils itself completely, making for a magnificent view. In winter, these meadows are covered in layers and layers of snow.

Not many people know that these are a few of the oldest skiing slopes of our country. Although not as popular as Gulmarg or Auli, this is no less pretty!

The best part of it? You get to camp right in the middle of these snowy slopes. It’s an experience you’ll talk about for a long long time.
