Food on the Trek

What is the general menu on the trek?

We provide you with healthy, nutritious food thrice a day on your trek. There will be snacks in between too, and sometimes pocket snacks for the trail.

Coming to your meals, you’ll be served mostly North Indian vegetarian food. So your typical meal will include roti (Indian flatbread), sabzi (vegetable), rice and dal (lentils).

You’ll also find familiar food like khichdi, rajma chawal, pulao, pancakes and sandwiches. There will be copious amounts of hot chai and soup of course! 🙂

All of these are made with as less oil as possible and as much “health” as possible.

Also, we are trying to go green in the way we buy the raw materials for our dishes.

We have stopped buying masalas in small packets, instead, we are looking for wholesale dealers who give them in loose.

This way we are reducing the plastic we are consuming.

So, when on our treks, you not only get to eat healthy food, but you can eat them guilt-free 🙂


How we decide our menu

We have put our menu together after tremendous research on the nutritional requirement of a high altitude trekker. You’ll notice that we always try to include the right amount of calories, carbs, protein, fibre and fat.

It took many heads to come together to make this menu – our research team, our ops team (to manage the transport of food items, kitchen equipment, gas cylinders, etc to campsites), our cooks, who were trained specifically for this, and of course, our Green Trails team, to ensure that we produce minimal waste with all the cooking.

If you’re particular about some vegetables (onion/potato) not being in your food, or your food not being too spicy, tell your trek leader at the start of the trek. He’ll speak to the cooks. But it is a high altitude trek after all – it is going to be a lesson in minimalism for many.


Do you serve non-veg on the trek?

We don’t provide non-vegetarian food on our treks. You can expect a few eggs where possible, but we don’t serve meat.

Meat has extremely high protein content, which is not required on a trek. It is also difficult for the body to digest at high altitude.

We have seen even non-vegetarians relish our vegetarian food, so don’t worry about the food. 🙂


Do you serve Jain food?

We do serve Jain food upon request (without onion, garlic, potatoes). You will have to inform your Coordinator in advance so that we can make arrangements on the slope.

Providing Jain food can be difficult on treks like Sandakphu where the staple vegetables are potato and onion. (We try and use as much local produce as possible to reduce packaged food.)

So if you’re trekking to Sandakphu or trekking in Nepal, do confirm with your  Experience Coordinator whether it would be possible to provide you with Jain food.

We also provide Vegan options as well. This is also on request only.


Water on the trek

The Himalayas are filled with streams and rivers. This is the main source of drinking water for the trek.

Our kitchen staff use the same water for cooking purpose as well.

The water is clean and is perfectly healthy to consume. In fact it is much better than the chlorinated water that you get in your cities.

I do understand that you might have concerns with the water and want to be extra careful.

Here is what you can do.

You can use chlorine tablets or water purification tablets in your bottle.

You can find these tabs on Amazon. Try searching for water purification tablets.

You can also go for a slightly more expensive but more permanent option. You can buy the life-straw bottle which ensures clean water.
