“We all try to seek adventure ( and memories) often unprepared, whenever we book a trek. It’s this your (IH’s) attitude to keep our safety foremost, somewhere assures me deep down, that whenever I leave for a trek or tell my loved ones that I am off for trekking, I am ‘covered’. I have heard stories of evacuations, forced returns, staying put for long and incomplete treks, keeping the safety above all needs an attitude which I see is embedded enough in the trek leaders, slope managers, and all through your website. I refer everyone saying, go take a trek with IH, they safe, and will care for you. Keep this as your motto. This trust makes IH different from others.” – Anirudh Gargi, Software Developer, Bangalore
“Hats off to the Indiahikes team! I had a wonderful experience in the complete trek and surprisingly have no complain at all. The Indiahikes team was on its toes at all times and they didn’t let us feel like anything was missing. The food served was served hot and delicious. With this amazing experience I would love to trek again with this esteemed organisation and would highly recommend it to my friends and family too.” – Nihar Shah, Student & Entrepreneur, Mumbai
“This was my first ever trekking experience, and overall, I’ve come back from the trek extremely happy and truly humbled. I enjoyed every moment of the trekking experience – the arduous ascents and tough descents, and do believe that the reason I enjoyed it, is the attention that Indiahikes pays to detail, to educate trekkers about what we’ve signed up for. This helps us physically and mentally to prepare ourselves for what’s to come. I definitely intend on returning back to the Himalayas for more treks with Indiahikes ” – Varsha Vijayababu, Software Engineer, Bangalore
“This is my first experience of trekking and I enjoyed it thoroughly.. Undoubtedly the best days of my life. Emails from Indiahikes regarding practice, choosing gears and other basic stuff were really helpful in preparation for the trek and to improve my strength and stamina. I am way too happy to have chosen Indiahikes as my trek partner. It was much more than expected. Thank you. I am definitely coming for many more treks in future!!” – Dr Komal Shah, Intervention Pulmonologist, Ahmedabad
“The trek went really well, Indiahikes made sure that we had an amazing 6 days in the mountains. All the arrangements were spot on. While our trek lead Krupa made sure that the health of the trekkers were in good condition by continuously monitoring oxygen level, pulse rate, the other two leaders sai pavan and leo lifted up the trek experience. Kudos to Indiahikes for making this an unforgettable experience in our life, thank you very much!” – Sanjay Saliyan, IT Technical Lead, Bangalore
“Kedarkantha was my first trek and it was the most amazing experience. I couldn’t imagine that a trek could be that good! It was my first experience trekking, in snow, travelling alone, without connectivity, just with friends I made on the trek, it was amazing! The Indiahikes team even made a cake for a friend, whose birthday it was! Now all my trek friends and I can talk about are treks!” – Ishani Ghotikar, Nutritionist, Hyderabad
“Every experience first time has a sense of apprehensiveness about what to expect and how to go about it. That was the same case as I ventured on my first Himalayan trek and needless to say Indiahikes were the complete package in reassuring you about having an amazing experience. They were absolutely professional about everything right from the start, constant communication through emails, tips about packing and gear, advice on fitness and all these actually mattered on the trek as it made the trek a memorable experience. The trek guide along with the trek staff were among the warmest people I have met, and their tireless efforts to make everyone comfortable deserves the loudest cheers. Indiahikes fully validates their claim that they are the largest trekking community and the most recommended by trekkers, because they actually care about the balance of giving the best trekking experience and sustaining and preserving the natural environment.” – Srikanth Chandrasekhar, Network Engineer, Mumbai
Heavy Snowfall Expected in Uttarakhand | Feb 20th, 2020
Here's a quick update for trekkers geared up to trek in Uttarakhand - We are expecting bad weather for a couple of days, today and tomorrow. And there are chances you might witness heavy snowfall.
We have cross-checked this weather forecast with the IMD website as well.
While trekking in the snow is fun, trails often get blocked or become inaccessible due to it. And, because we cannot predict the amount of snowfall we might receive, it is good to be prepared for it.
So, here's what you need to keep in mind:
In the case of mild snowfall, we will conduct the trek as usual. If the snowfall is heavy, then we may change the itinerary and campsites.
All our teams on the mountains are geared up for the bad weather and alternate arrangements are in place, in case there is a change in itinerary or if there are early descents.
Stay safe, and happy trekking!Read more
Ali Bedni Bugyal trek of Roopkund is now open | Feb 10th, 2020
With the ban on camping in bugyals, the trek to Roopkund is effectively impossible. While the decision was welcome, losing out on the Roopkund trail stung us. Not because of the adventure the trail offers. Not even for the mysterious lake itself. The loss we felt the keenest from this trail was for the twin meadows of Ali and Bedni Bugyal. It’s a loss that we collectively rued. With this trek, we hope to bring to trekking community the experience of Ali and Bedni Bugyal.
The surprise of finding yourself in Ali Bugyal after trekking through dense forests is unbeatable. The moment you get out of the shades of the forest cover, you see acres and acres of green carpet sprawled out in front of you. Mt Trishul, stands tall against the blue skies, making for a formidable backdrop.Read more
Indiahikes Founders Arjun Majumdar & Sandhya UC at Change-Makers, IIM Bangalore | Feb 5th, 2020
Last week, our founders, Arjun Majumdar and Sandhya UC were invited to IIM Bangalore to speak at their flagship entrepreneurship event, Change-Makers.
Their talk was especially insightful for entrepreneurs who wanted to step into the travel world, and what the future might look like for them.
Here's an excerpt from their Q&A:
"It is evident that there is an increasing number of solo travellers, especially women. What do you think has prompted this mindset change and how is this trend evolving?"
Arjun: It is true solo travellers have increased, especially women. We see it in our statistics too.
At Indiahikes almost 32% of our trekkers are women.
However, I must clarify what solo travellers are. Because I feel there is a bit of misconception here. Most people imagine solo women travellers to be those who are backpacking alone. That's not true.
Indiahikes Founders Arjun Majumdar & Sandhya UC at Change-Makers, IIM Bangalore | Feb 5th, 2020
We mostly see solo women trekkers come along with their friends or office colleagues, or old trek mates. We don't know whether you can call them solo, because in the spirit they are solo, but they are also with the company.
We have also seen a large rise of women trekking absolutely alone without any known people in the group.
Sandhya: One of the reasons why such a large number of solo women are trekking with us is because trekking with an organisation builds in a safety net that they don't get if they are on their own. They know that if anything goes wrong the organisation is there to look into it.
Another reason why a large number of women trek is because we have noticed that the hills in our country are largely safe. It is the bigger cities that worry about women.
Arjun: I am not very sure if the percentage of women trekking with us would go above 37-38%. That's because it is directly linked with the number of women in the workforce. If women in the workforce increase, then we are likely to see an increase in women going out alone.
Trek Leaders Training starts at a beautiful clearing near Mussoorie | Feb 4th, 2020
Today, we kickstarted a Trek Leaders Training Program at a beautiful clearing near Mussoorie. Surrounded by pine trees, with its heady fragrance, we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful setting. But the training is extremely serious. Our trek leaders are undergoing an intensive, rigorous training program in experiential learning conducted by Gerrit Onstein, who was specially flown down from Netherlands. Gerrit is one of the few professionals in the world with over 30 years of experience in outdoor experiential learning.
This training is there for a good reason. "The takeaways from a trek are immense. A trek can give you a lot more than just a trek. A trek has a very big impact on your mind, body and spirit. You become more resilient, gain confidence and learn leadership skills that cannot be learned anywhere else. This impact must be harnessed. This training program will help our trek leaders facilitate such impact in a deep way," says the founder of Indiahikes, Arjun Majumdar.
The Trek Leaders' Training Program aims to bring in a structure to our treks that will enable our trek leaders to facilitate such impacts.
Meeting DFO Ashutosh Singh at Birahi Nature Festival | Jan 31st, 2020
Green Trails team member Shrikant Raipurkar and Dhan Singh Sir visited Birahi Nature Festival. From there, Shrikant reported, "We met Ashutosh Singh (DFO) and had a conversation regarding what we have been doing in terms of GT. We spoke about our community engagement in Lohajung and nearby villages.
We also handed over the upcycled products and explained how we have worked with the local community.
As it was an informal meeting that lasted merely 15 mins, we were not able to get a signed acknowledgement of our efforts from him. But we handed him an upcycled cardboard folder containing all the letters and Green Trails Lohajung project report. He has urged us to have a proper meeting in the coming months for a detailed discussion regarding the same. Ashutosh Singh (DFO) was also glad to receive the upcycled wind chimes."
