Island camping trek on the backwaters of Hirakud Dam
Odisha has always been famous for its food, culture, and spectacular scenery. However, trekking in the region has always remained an elusive opportunity for all. And that is about to change.
Debrigarh, more than a wildlife sanctuary, is a natural wonder. Never before have we seen such diverse ecosystems in a single place. The Mahanadi River serves as the lifeline of this region.
The Hirakud reservoir has given rise to numerous islands here. Each island has a delicate ecosystem of its own. But here’s where the magic unfolds: During winter and summer, as the water level recedes, newer islands come to life, setting up a perfect home for migratory birds coming in winter. The islands here are ever-changing.

The first leg of today's journey will take you to Zero Point, which is the entrance of Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary. Zero Point is located about an hour away from Sambalpur.
As soon as you cross Sambalpur city, you cross the mighty Mahanadi River. From here, you drive north towards the Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam on earth. Watch out for the dam on your right. The sheer size of the dam will make you feel tiny.
M. Visvesvaraya put forward a comprehensive proposal to address the severe flooding in the Mahanadi delta region by suggesting the construction of a reservoir. The plan received final authorization in 1945 for the Hirakud dam. By 1953, the construction had concluded, and it was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The Hirakud dam, stretching 25.8 kilometres, holds the distinction of being the longest earthen dam. Positioned between two hills, Laxmi Dungri on the left and Chandili Dunguri on the right, it creates India's largest artificial lake. Additionally, there are two observation towers flanking the dam: "Gandhi Minar" and "Jawahar Minar."
From here, the drive gets scenic along the backwaters of the dam. The reservoir extends like an ocean in front of you. You won't be able to see the opposite side of the water. You will also be able to see tiny islands on this reservoir. You will follow this road until you reach the entrance of the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary.
Once you reach Zero Point, You will proceed with the registration and briefing by your trek leader.

Trek distance: 7 km | Boat Drive : 1.5 hours
Duration: 6.5 hours
After breakfast, you descend back into the forest. Today's trail is filled with trees on all sides until you reach the backwaters of the Hirakud dam. The forest gets dense as you walk along. In some places, you will feel like you are in a northeastern jungle where sunlight hardly falls to the ground. Watch out for the butterflies that hop from tree to tree.
Trees are short but dense. There are also some parts of the trail filled with bamboo trees. A walk through these bamboo forests is one of the major highlights of the day.
These forests are also filled with other trees like Sal, Asana, Bija, Charu, Karada, Moi, and Salia.
Watch out for animals like the Indian Gaur and deer foraging in the vegetation.
Once you reach the reservoir, make your way to Bat Island. Post lunch, You will hop on the boat to Cattle Island.
Cattle Island is 1.5 hours upstream. You cannot even imagine the magnitude of the reservoir during the boat trip.
The island was one of the high points in the area before the construction of the dam. When the dam was completed and water started filling the surrounding areas, all the cows left behind moved to this high point, which soon became an island after the construction of the dam.
When you arrive at the island, you will realise that you are in the middle of nowhere with water all around you. Then there are cows, just cows—the residents of the island. You camp here on this island in the middle of nowhere, along with the cows
Imagine watching the sunset and sunrise the following day from the water. Its truly a magical experience to camp here.

3. Hotel options at Sambalpur
Since this is a new trek, Indiahikes has not been able to visit the hotels on ground and see the standards. We have collected this data from Google and other trustworthy sites to save your time. But please do review the hotel yourself before booking.
The recommended hotels are:
- Hotel Sheela Towers
- Regenta Inn (High-End)
If you’re trekking in the Debrigarh Sanctuary in March, the temperature during the day will be around 28 to 34 degrees and, at night the temperature will drop to 15 to 18 degrees. You will need to carry a minimum of one warm layer.
Ensure you carry a pair of sandals, a poncho and full sleeve t-shirts and pants to have a comfortable trek.
Bare Necessities:
- Trekking shoes: Carry trekking shoes and not sports shoes. The trail will be slippery in several places and will require shoes with good grip and ankle support. You can watch this video to learn to choose the right trekking shoes.
- Backpack (40-45 litres): A backpack with sturdy straps and a supporting frame. Rain cover for the backpack is essential.
Clothes
On a trek, carry fewer clothes than you would normally need. Do not pack for ‘what if situations’. That will only add to the weight of your backpack and not be used on the trek. Once your clothes get warmed up on a trek, you will not feel like changing. Just maintain personal hygiene.
- One layer of warm clothes: Carry one warm jacket or fleece for protection in the night. If your jacket is windproof then all the more better.
- Two trek pants: Carry light quick dry trek pants. One trek pant while trekking and an another pant inside the backpack. Denim/jeans and shorts are not suitable for trekking.
- Three t-shirts: You will wear one t-shirt while trekking and the rest two t-shirt inside your backpack. Carry light, full-sleeved t-shirts that prevent sunburns on the neck and arms. Let one of these be a dry-fit t-shirt. It will dry quickly in case you are trekking on a rainy day.
- Sandals: Carry sandals on this trek required on day four during the shore walk. Trekking shoes are required for the forest but have a handy pair of sandals to slip into.
Accessories
- Sunglasses: Sunglasses are mandatory. This is to protect you from the harsh winter sun.
- Sun Cap: In the jungles, even though there is heavy tree cover, the harsh sun can dehydrate you very quickly. A sun cap comes in handy to prevent the moisture to escape when you are sweating.
- Socks (4 pairs): Your normal cotton/ sport socks are good, but make sure they are all high ankle socks
- Headlamp/LED torch: Mandatory + extra Batteries.
- Trekking pole: Watch this video to understand why you need a trekking pole.
- Ponchos: In a jungle, unexpected rain is possible at any time, and hence it’s mandatory to carry a poncho so that you don’t get wet.
Others
- Toiletries: Sunscreen, light towel, toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer. Do not carry wet wipes since these are not biodegradable. We do not like biodegradable wet wipes because they take a long time to decompose in the mountains. Use toilet paper instead.
- Sanitary waste: Make sure you bring your used sanitary napkins back to the city with you. Carry a zip lock bag to put used napkins. Bring this ziplock bag back with you to the city and do not dispose of sanitary napkins in the mountains.
- Cutlery: Carry a spoon, coffee mug and a lunch box. We insist on trekkers getting their cutlery for hygiene reasons. We do not allow biodegradable or disposable cutlery on our treks.
- Two water bottles: 1 litre each.
- Plastic covers: While packing, use plastic bags to compartmentalize things and carry a few extra plastic bags for wet clothes.
- Odomos or any other insect repellant
PRO TIPS
Keep important documents in a clear plastic cover and slide them into the inner pocket at the back of your backpack. This keeps them from getting wet.
These are documents required for legal purposes by Indiahikes and the forest department. Without any of these, you will not be allowed to trek.
- Original and 2 (two) photocopies of government identity card. Anything such as a driver’s license, Aadhar Card, or passport will do. This is required by the forest department for your identification.
- Personal Medical Form and Disclaimer certificate: There are two sections in this. The first part is a personal medical record. The second part is a legal requirement. Download the PDF, read carefully, fill in and sign it. This must be handed over to your Trek Leader during registration at the base camp. – Download disclaimer certificate
- A Medical Certificate (mandatory for trekkers aged 58 and above). You must submit a medical certificate signed by an MBBS doctor, certifying your fitness and health for the trek. Any pre-existing medical conditions must be clearly outlined. Trekkers under the age of 58 do not need this certificate. – Download medical certificate
Please note: Trekkers above the age of 58 need to submit both the certificates mentioned under points 2 and 3
Please carry the above documents with you. The documents need to be downloaded (PDF), filled in, signed, and handed over to the trek leader at the base camp. Please print these back-to-back on two sheets. Do not print separately and help in reducing paper usage.
Carry these medicines with you, easily accessible at all times. Do not take any medicine unless you have consulted your trek leader.
- Crocin (Paracetamol) – 6 tablets (fever)
- Norflox TZ – 3 tablets (diarrhoea/ severe GI issue)
- Band-Aid – 4 strips
- ORS – 4 packets
- Volini Spray - aches, & sprains
- Knee Cap (Optional), if you are prone to a knee injury
- Anti Fungal Powder
- Odomos or any other insect repellent
Our trek leaders carry a medical kit with them. If there is an emergency our trek leaders know how to tackle it. Meanwhile, contact your trek leader before consuming any of these medicines listed here.
Pro Tip: We find that these medicines by trekkers are rarely used. But you cannot do away with them. At the end of the trek please donate unused medicines to your trek leader. Some of these medicines get distributed to villages on the trek and some are added to the Indiahikes medical kit.
We recommend brisk walk as the best routine to get fit for this trek. It works on the same muscles that you use while trekking — your calves, glutes and hamstrings. It helps increase your stamina day by day. It is also an easy routine that does not require any equipment or tools.
Recommended Fitness target:
To do this trek comfortably, you must be able to walk 5 km in under 50 minutes. This is the minimum recommended fitness level that you should be aiming for.
Trekking is a sport that primarily uses your lungs, your core, and your lower body. To reach this fitness, there are just two things to work on - your cardiovascular endurance and your muscle strength. Being fit will help you enjoy the trek and will keep you safe.
Follow this simple schedule and you will be trek-fit:
Weeks 1 - 4:
- Walking
- Week 1: Keep the distance of your walk to just 2 km
- Week 2: Keep the distance of your walk to just 3 km
- Week 3: Keep the distance of your walk to just 4 km
- Week 4: Keep the distance of your walk to 5 km
- Stair Climbing: When you climb stairs, target for at least 10 floors (20 stairs per floor), and repeat it for 2 sets.
- Stretching: Keep stretching every day. This video will help you with stretching:
Take your rest days seriously and rest. Your body recovers quickly when you rest.
5 Must-Do Stretches Before Your Trek
Weeks 5 - 8:
- Once you can comfortably walk 5 km, the following weeks are focused on building speed.
- Everyday, walk 5 km with an intention to finish within 50-60 minutes. Do not worry if you are not there yet. You will get there by the end of Week 8.
- Once a week, go for 10 km walk at a stretch. This will help build your endurance. Do not worry about the time you take to cover this distance.
- Continue with stair climbing and stretching.
Important Note: If you are not a regular runner, do not start running all of a sudden.
Three things happen when you are not fit:
- You do not enjoy the trek
- You struggle to be a part of the team
- You miss out on a deep transformative experience that trekking can offer
The good part is, it’s not difficult. All you need to do is start following the fitness routine 45-60 days before the trek begins.
We are here to help you in this fitness journey. Just start slow and as long as you are committed and consistent with your routine, you are in for an unforgettable trek experience :)
The Odisha Jungle Trek is 3 days with 2 nights of camping. The total trek distance would be 16km and the rest of the distance would be covered by boats.
The Odisha Debrigarh Sanctuary is located on the backwaters of the Hirakud dam in Sambalpur district. The Sanctuary is located on the mighty Mahanadi River
The accommodations on both days of the trek would be tented accommodations. All the tents are two-person sharing tents.
The basecamp at Zero Point will have concrete toilets. On Trek days, toilet tents will be set up along each campsite.
A toilet tent will have a deep pit, where one can answer nature’s call. There will be a mound of soil or sawdust and a shovel to cover it up. These are dry toilets, where you’ll have to use toilet paper. There will be a room freshener as well. It’s the most hygienic and convenient way to answer nature’s call in the wild.
Please use plain toilet paper and refrain from using wet wipes since these are not biodegradable.
You can withdraw cash from Sambalpur before the start of the trek. It is a big town. 'You wont get any ATMs on the trail as it is inside a sanctuary.
Offloading is not available on this trek. You do not have long walking days on this trek. And this trek is being organised in collaboration with the Odisha government. Thus offloading is not available as of now. We might change this in the future.

1. Camping on Cattle island
“When I set my foot down on the island, I was instantly transported back to my childhood. Camping on an isolated island, like in movies, was one thing that had always been on my bucket list. I took off my shoes and took a long walk on the gravelly shores. And just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, I saw the sun disappearing into the water on the horizon.”
You cannot convince yourself that you are indeed inside a sanctuary and not in the vast ocean. But wait, there’s more. Come next morning, you will see the sun painting the quiet expanse of water bright yellow!
Did you know how the cattle island came to be in the first place?
When the Hirakud dam was being constructed, thousands of families were displaced. Many had to leave their livestock behind. After the dam was completed and the area started to submerge, the many cattle left behind ran for higher ground. The Bhujapahad became their safe haven.
60 years later, the once mighty hill has become an island teeming with white cattle. Many locals around the area have tried catching them, but to no avail. Due to the unavailability of any natural predators, the population has thrived and grown wild for over 60 years. Normally, tourists cannot camp on the shores of this island. You should enjoy this exclusive experience to the fullest!

2. 20 km boat ride and birds that you see
This boat ride will make you weak on your knees. You cannot believe that you are riding waves in a reservoir and not in the ocean. The heat that you had experienced before vanishes as the cool breeze hits you. You pass one island after another. You are surrounded by water as far as your eyes can see, with some parts going as deep as 250 feet.
This boat ride is also a photographer’s delight. You see flocks of migratory birds going about their day. You see Geese, Grebes, Cormorants, Pochards, Golden Oriole, Great Egret, Little Fern, and other flocks of migratory birds, especially during monsoons. It is estimated that over 100 species of birds, around 3 lakh in number, visit the sanctuary every year. And the number has only been increasing thanks to the local communities and forest official’s efforts.

3. Trekking in the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary
This is the jewel of the crown. A very well known wildlife sanctuary in this part of India. However, for the first time, an organised group has been allowed to trek and camp for two days in its untouched jungles. You trek through so many diverse terrains that you often find yourself wondering how can this be possible. In the span of only two days, you trek through a tall bamboo forest, grasslands, walk on shorelines, climb hills, explore caves and spot many varieties of animals too. The forest officials accompany you throughout the trek for an additional net of safety.

4. The immense richness of fauna
An area spread over 350 sq km, combined with abundant water sources and a tropical climate sounds like the perfect recipe for a thriving jungle. And it surely is! Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the richest biodiversity pockets in Eastern India.
This place is home to a large population of Indian Bison. Shy but short-tempered, it is best to keep distance. Herbivores like spotted deer, sambars and nilgai also graze on the grasslands near the shores. Look up the trees and you might find a family of langurs looking down curiously at you.
Big cats like leopards, tigers are extremely elusive, but their paw marks remind you of their presence. Endangered species of Indian wolves and hyenas although few in number, are also on top of the food chain here. On top of all these you find different species of bears, insects and reptiles living harmoniously here.
