A Hidden Trek in the Yamunotri Valley with Grand Mountain Views
Trekking in Uttarakhand has long been synonymous with Garhwal. From legendary trails like Kuari Pass or Gaumukh Tapovan to modern favourites like Kedarkantha or Phulara Ridge, Garhwal’s trails are so well-trodden that finding something fresh feels unlikely.
But a closer look at the map revealed an obvious gap—the Yamunotri Valley. Apart from the legendary Bali Pass trek, we had barely explored that region. That’s where our search for a trek near Yamunotri began, and after many trials, we finally zeroed in on the Aancha Top trek.
The trek begins at Ranachatti, a village in the heart of the Yamunotri region. It climbs quickly through enchanting forests to the vast Dinala Bugyal. But the real magic unfolds in the meadows. You not only trek among the legendary peaks of Garhwal, including the Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini massifs but also witness three glacial lakes spread out on the Bugyal.
Aancha Top - Complete Trek Information
We have always wanted trekkers to be well-informed before they go on a Himalayan trek. Knowledge is the difference between a safe trek and a dangerous one. It’s also the difference between a wholesome experience and a superficial experience.
Use this section to learn about the Aancha Top Trek. It has in-depth information about each day of the trek, what to expect, and how you need to prepare for it. Many years of expertise have gone into this content. Trekkers find that extremely useful.

Trek from Ranachatti to Bamsingh

Trek Distance: 4 km | Trek Duration: 3 hrs

7,000 ft to 9,200 ft

Multiple water sources in the forest on the way to Bamsingh
The trail begins with an ascent through the village, weaving past terraced farmlands. You move in and out of small forest patches nestled between the fields. Along the way, there are multiple water points and chhanis (shepherd huts). After the second chhani, around the 1.5 km mark, the trail turns steep and rocky. To your left, Bandarpoonch peeks over the horizon.
A 300-meter climb over this rocky terrain leads to a small flat resting spot. This is a good place to pause. Bandarpoonch becomes more prominent, and the Yamuna River stretches below. From here, the trail gains elevation again, cutting through a patch of old oak trees. After about 200 meters, the trees thin out, revealing a clearing. You have already reached Ganga Ram Ji’s Chhani, the half-way point of today’s trek.
Past the chhani, the incline eases as the trail enters a dense forest. You cover 600 meters on mostly flat terrain, with gentle ups and downs, before reaching the Coin Tree. This marks the first clear sight of Dinnala Bugyal, with Aancha Top to the left and Jhandi Top to the right. Beyond the coin tree, the climb steepens once more.

A steep 200-meter push takes you up the side of a spur. After this, the gradient relaxes, and you walk on the sides of the spur, through a forest of old oaks. In 100 meters, a small clearing opens up. There are no towering peaks in sight yet, just the rising slopes of Dinnala ahead. The forest then grows denser again.
Following the marked trail in the forest for 30-40 minutes, you reach another large open clearing. A big water source flows nearby, making it an ideal campsite. This is Bamsingh— your campsite for the day.
Enjoy a hot lunch and unwind in this secluded clearing, surrounded by thick forests.

Trek from Bamsingh to Dinnala Camp

Trek Distance: 4 km | Trek Duration: 4 hrs

9,200 ft to 10,750 ft

There is just one water source on the way before you reach Sannodi. Carry enough water.
The day starts with a 150-meter descent from Bamsingh into a re-entrant, or valley. In monsoon, this section may have water. From here, the trail climbs gradually through dense forests. At the 1.1 km mark, you reach a small clearing before the forest thickens again.
200 meters ahead of this clearing, a large fallen tree blocks the path. Step over it and continue. Just beyond, a clearing appears straight ahead, but that trail does not lead to Dinnala. Take a right turn, instead, and descend through the forest to a stream. This is Daloti Gad, which eventually flows down straight into the Yamuna River.
Cross the stream and brace for a steep climb through the forest. This section takes about an hour. After 1 km, the incline eases into a flat walk. A short distance later, you cross a small water stream and arrive at the big clearing of Sannodi. This is the halfway point for the day. Take a break here. You are still within the treeline, but you can see that the forests have started thinning.

Big mountains now appear on the horizon. Bandarpoonch comes back into view. The Swargarohini massif starts revealing its pointed summits. Further to your left, Kedarkantha Peak and Phulara Ridge also come into sight.
From Sannodi, a gradual ascent continues for another kilometer. The tree line fades, and the meadows appear. You have reached Dinnala Bugyal. The Swargarohini peaks now stand clearer behind Bandarpoonch. The entire skyline stretches into a serrated ridge of Garhwal’s lesser-known summits.
Within 500 meters, you reach a chhani. You can camp here or continue further. Multiple water sources allow flexible camping spots across Dinnala Bugyal.
This is a place to rest and soak in the mountains. As the sun sets, magical orange hues light up the peaks. Take in the views, unwind and prepare for the long summit day that lies ahead.

Trek from Dinnala to Aancha Camp via Aancha Top

Trek Distance: 8 km | Trek Duration: 7 hrs

9,200 ft to 11,400 ft via 12,525 ft

No Water Sources on this day. Please carry 2 litres of water from the camp.
At Dinnala campsite, wake up to towering mountains all around. The day starts with a gradual ascent through open meadows. There are no big trees now, only patches of rhododendron shrubs lining the trail. As you climb, Bandarpoonch dominates the skyline. Swargarohini slowly gains prominence, with more and more of its tips gradually coming into view.
After 600 meters, you ascend a rocky gully and turn right. At the 1.5 km mark, you arrive at the first lake on Dinnala Bugyal. This is the largest of the three glacial lakes you will see today. On a clear day, Swargarohini’s iconic crown reflects perfectly in its still water.
From here, turn left and walk another kilometer. Two more glacial lakes appear, nestled in the vast open meadows. These lakes look stunning in every season as the meadows take on different colors—pristine white in winter, lush green in summer, and reddish-orange hues in autumn. Spend some time exploring the lakes and the meadows before returning to the first lake.

This is where the real highlight of the trek begins.
Instead of turning left, now take the rightward trail. A steep 200-meter climb leads onto a ridge. Up here, even rhododendrons disappear. You stand amidst magical views of the Gangotri and Yamunotri ranges.
As soon as you step onto the ridge, the mountains on your right, which were hidden so far, suddenly come into view—Gangotri III, Jogin, Kedarnath, and the vast meadows of Dayara and Gidara. To your left, Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini dominate the horizon. The trail now follows the ridge, and you walk amidst these grand views for hours.
A 2 km gradual ascent along the ridge leads to Aancha Top. At the summit, Bandarpoonch feels close enough to touch. New peaks emerge—Srikantha, Gangotri I, and Jaonli now stand in full view. You are completely surrounded by the incredible panorama of the Garhwal Himalayas. Spend time here, absorbing the vastness of the landscape.
After taking in the summit views, descend slowly towards Aancha Camp. Retrace your steps along the ridge, then navigate a steep descent back to the lakes. Walk across the expansive meadows of Dinnala Bugyal towards the other end of the meadows.
Negotiate gradual ascents until you reach the farthest edge from where you camped in the morning. This end of Dinala Bugyal is marked by another small stream, the Jajar Gad, which also flows past into the Yamuna.
After crossing over to the other side of Jajar Gad, you reach the Aancha Camp. The Bandarpoonch massif and Gangotri peaks are now hidden from sight. Only a glimpse of Swargarohini remains. As the sun sets, it glows in magical orange hues.
Take in the magic of Dinala Bugyal and settle in for rest after a long, demanding day.

Trek from Aancha Camp to Ranachatti

Trek Distance: 6 km | Trek Duration: 5 hrs

11,400 ft to 7,000 ft

There are multiple water sources after you arrive at Ganga Ji ka Chhani.
Start your descent from Aancha camp gradually through open meadows. As you lose altitude, rhododendrons begin to reappear. The big mountains that dominated the skyline start to slip away behind you. But for a while, Bandarpoonch II still peeks from the horizon, along with a tiny glimpse of Swargarohini.
As the trail descends further, the gradient steepens and you re-enter the treeline. Pines and birches take over the open landscape. Slowly, the forest gets denser and the descent becomes sharp. At the 1.5 km mark, you reach a small clearing. Behind you, the big mountains have completely disappeared.
Now, only the vast expanse of Dinnala Bugyal dominates the horizon. Aancha Top and Jhandi Top stands out at the two ends of the meadows. Beyond the clearing, you enter the forest again. As you navigate a steep descent, oaks begin to appear in the mix. After about a kilometre, you step into a large clearing called Pokhari Thathar. As soon as you enter, Bandarpoonch massif opens up in full view again. Rest awhile and take in the views.

You step amidst the step-cut agricultural fields appear again. Continue along the same trail that you had climbed on Day 2. Descend sharply for 2 km through a mosaic of forest and cultivated land to reach Ranachatti.
Bandarpoonch stays in full view throughout this entire descent beyond Ganga ji ki Chhani until you reach Ranachatti. After reaching Ranachatti, have lunch and retire for the day at the village. Rest overnight before the long drive to Dehradun the next morning.

Easy-Moderate Trek
Suitable for Fit Beginners
At Indiahikes, while rating a trek difficulty we consider a number of factors. These include, altitude gained every day, length of trek everyday, highest altitude, nature of the terrain, weather etc. Based on this, we rate a trek as easy or difficult or somewhere in between.
Easy-Moderate Trek
Safety on the Aancha Top Trek
If you are trekking with Indiahikes, your Trek Leader will tell you when to wear the microspikes. Indiahikes technical team will lead in this section to make the footholds required for trekkers to step on.
At altitudes above 10,000 ft, the chances of being hit by Acute Mountain Sickness are real. Altitude sickness does not distinguish between a first timer and an experienced trekker. Even experienced trekkers can get affected. Fitness helps in making your trek easier. But do not forget that even a fit person climbing too high too soon runs an equal risk of developing AMS.
Some symptoms to watch out for: (a) Persistent headache (b) Feeling fatigued or weak (c) Feel nauseous or vomit (d) Feeling dizzy or lightheaded, often while sitting up or standing suddenly (e) You don’t feel like eating, you have a loss of appetite (f) You don’t sleep very well at night.
The Aancha Top Trek gains altitude quite gradually but you must stay alert for any signs of AMS.
Weather plays a big role in your safety on the trek. Here are some of the weather-related issues that can play an important role in your Aancha Top Trek.
At altitudes above 10,000 ft, snowfall can happen anytime. A spell of rain on the lower slopes almost usually leads to light or heavy snow in the upper regions.
It can rain or snow abruptly at any time at such high altitudes. A rainfall or snowfall that lasts more than four hours can change your trek plans. Rain can flood the trails or make them too slushy to walk safely on. Some normal sections can become very slippery.
The Indiahikes technical team along with the Trek Leader takes a call on when to proceed with the trek and when to stay back. A team may have to turn around from the highest camp if the weather turns worse.
Emergency Exits: There are no easy exits on the Aancha Top Trek. In case of an AMS incident or other emergencies, you can exit only via Ranachatti. Evacuation can take 7-8 hours from the farthest point.
Closest Hospital: There is a primary hospital in Ranachatti. So, if a medical emergency occurs, it is your first point of contact. For further treatment, there is an equipped Government Hospital at Barkot, a 1.5 hrs drive from Ranachatti.
Ranachatti is the base camp for the Aancha Top Trek. It is situated along the way to the well-known pit stop of Janakichatti, where the Yamunotri Trek begins.
Your journey to reach Ranachatti typically starts from Dehradun, which is an overnight bus journey from New Delhi. Alternatively, you can also fly directly to Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport.
If you have opted for the Indiahikes pickup, our team will pick you up at 8 AM on Day 1 of your trek from the Grand Legacy Hotel in Dehradun.
Here is a detailed guide to help you plan your travel to Dehradun:
Dehradun, being the capital of Uttarakhand, is well-connected to most major cities and there are many ways to reach it. However, we recommend that you take one of the two following options:
- Fly directly to Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport
Jolly Grant Airport is located on the outskirts of Dehradun, approximately 30 km from the Indiahikes pick-up point. To ensure you arrive on time for the 8 AM pick-up at the Grand Legacy Hotel in Dehradun, please book an early morning flight.
If you don’t find an early morning option, please arrive at Dehradun on Day 0– one day before your trek starts– and stay the night at Dehradun. Staying overnight in Dehradun will allow you to rest and be better prepared for the long road journey the next day. - Fly to Delhi and take an overnight train or bus to Dehradun
If the direct flights to Dehradun are too costly, fly to Delhi and take an overnight bus or train to Dehradun. Flying to Delhi may be a lot cheaper than getting to Dehradun.
You must arrive in Delhi on Day 0– one day before your trek starts– and not on Day 1.
Note: If you notice the difference in air ticket prices between Delhi and Dehradun is less than Rs 1000 then book directly to Dehradun. The rest and shorter travel time are worth the difference.
Recommended Trains from Delhi to Dehradun:
- Nanda Devi Express to Dehradun
Train No: 12401
Departs at 11.45 pm from Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) and reaches Dehradun at 5.40 am
You can avail metro services to reach Hazrat Nizamuddin (Sarai Kale Khan) Metro Station from Delhi Airport. Use the DMRC Momentum App to plan your Metro journey and book your tickets in advance. The Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway station is just a 10 mins walk from the Metro Station. - Jan Shatabdi express
Train No: 12055
Departs at 3.20 pm from New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) and reaches Dehradun at 9.10 pm
Stay overnight at Dehradun. This will allow you to rest and be better prepared for the long road journey the next day.
Overnight Buses from Delhi to Dehradun:
- Regular Volvo AC buses from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun. You also get Non-AC buses. Buses are frequent and not usually crowded. You can get a bus almost every half hour. Buses take 7-8 hours to get to Dehradun from Delhi.
- We recommend taking the Uttarakhand Transport (UTC) Buses. These buses depart from the ISBT Kashmiri Gate in Delhi every hour from 8 pm until midnight. They are reliable and you can book online through the UTC Pathik App.
- You can avail metro services to reach ISBT Kashmiri Gate from Delhi Airport. Use the DMRC Momentum App to plan your Metro journey and book your tickets in advance.
How to reach Ranachatti on your own:
Since Ranachatti is located on the well-traveled pilgrimage route to Yamunotri, reaching it independently is quite convenient. While there are multiple ways to get there, we recommend splitting the journey from Dehradun to Ranachatti into two stages:
- Dehradun Hill Bus Stand to Barkot
Board the 5:30 AM UTC bus from Dehradun Hill Bus Stand to Barkot. These government-run services are typically reliable and punctual. You can expect to reach Barkot by 11 AM. Plan in advance and book your ticket online through the UTC Pathik App. - Barkot to Ranachatti
From Barkot, shared vehicles frequently run to Janakichatti, the starting point of the Yamunotri pilgrimage. Since Ranachatti is along this route, you can board any of the vehicles plying to Janakichatti and get dropped off at Ranachatti.
The 35 km journey from Barkot to Ranachatti takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and it's easier to find shared vehicles if you arrive before noon.
Given below is a list of all the gear you need for the Aancha Top Trek:
If you don’t have certain items, you can rent high-quality gear like trekking shoes, backpacks, and jackets from the Crosstrek Rental Store by Indiahikes. It costs less than Rs 2000 for the entire trek. We highly recommend renting gear since it is both more affordable and environmentally friendly.
Additionally, you’ll notice a small medical kit in the list. While our trek leaders carry medical kits with 17 medicines including life-saving drugs, you must bring your personal medical kit as well. We are already equipped with BP machines, oximeters and canned oxygen, but your medical kit is for quick access to you, especially while travelling.
Most importantly, you must digitally upload and carry mandatory documents to get government permits for the trek - your ID card, medical certificate, and disclaimer certificate. PRO TIPS
Keep important documents in a clear plastic cover and slide them into the inner pocket at the back of your backpack. This keeps them from getting wet. Please note there is no facility to get printouts and photocopies at Sari.
These are documents required for legal purposes by Indiahikes and the forest department. Without any of these, you will not be allowed to trek.
- Original and photocopy of government photo identity card. Anything such as a driver’s license, Aadhar Card, or passport will do. This is required by the forest department for your identification.
- Disclaimer certificate: There are two sections in this. The first part is a personal medical record. The second part is a legal requirement. Download the PDF, read carefully, fill in and sign it. This must be handed over to your Trek Leader during registration at the base camp. – Download disclaimer certificate
- Medical certificate: The medical certificate needs to be filled out by an MBBS doctor, without which the forest department will not issue permissions for your trek. It is also a requirement by Indiahikes – Download medical certificate
Note: Indiahikes has a panel of doctors who can help you with a medical certificate. They are available for online consultation. To get in touch with them, please write to trekmedicalcertificates@gmail.com. They will respond to you within 24 hours.
Consultation fee: Rs 300
Carry these medicines with you, easily accessible at all times. Do not take any medicine unless you have consulted your trek leader.
- Diamox (1 Strip): It is important to carry Diamox as part of the Live Saving Drugs. Read more about Diamox here on how it reduces the chances of Acute Mountain Sickness on the trek.
- Dolo 650 (5 tablets): This is a paracetamol. It helps to tackle fever, mild pain
- Avomine (4 tablets): Carry this especially if you are prone to motion sickness. Pop one-half hour before the start of your road journey.
- Combiflam (5 tablets): Take a combiflam if you get a sudden twist of the leg or a muscle strain. It is a pain reliever. It also contains paracetamol.
- Digene (4 tablets): Take it if you feel the food that you’ve taken is undigested. Alert your trek leader immediately. It could be a sign of AMS.
- ORS (6 packs): Consume a pack of ORS water at least once a day, usually a mid-day when you are in the middle of your trek. It replenishes essential salts lost while trekking. Tip: It also makes cold water easier to drink.
- Knee Brace (optional): Carry this if you are prone to knee injury or have known issues of knee pain.
Our trek leaders carry a high altitude medical kit with them which also consist of Life Saving Drugs. If there is an emergency our trek leaders know how to tackle it. Meanwhile, contact your trek leader before consuming any of these medicines listed here.
Pro Tip: We find that these medicines by trekkers are rarely used. But you cannot do away with them. At the end of the trek please donate unused medicines to your trek leader. Some of these medicines get distributed to villages on the trek and some are added to the Indiahikes medical kit.
We recommend jogging as the best routine to get fit for a trek. It works on the same muscles that you use while trekking — your calves, glutes and hamstrings. It helps increase your stamina day by day. It is also an easy routine that does not require any equipment or tools.
Fitness target:
This trek requires you to be able to cover 5 km in under 38 minutes. This is the minimum fitness required for this trek.

How to achieve this fitness?
- Start jogging at least 4 days a week
- If you cannot run 5 km immediately, start with 2 km and increase to 5 km over 2-3 weeks.
- Once you’re able to run 5 km, increase your pace day by day.
- Gradually increase your pace and bring it down to 5 km in less than 38 mins.
- You must be able to run 5 km in 38 mins consistently for at least 2 weeks before the trek.

Every trekker needs fitness approval from the Indiahikes team 20 days before the trek date. Without this, you will not be allowed on the trek.
What to upload?
- A minimum of 3 screenshots of your runs/jogs/walks/cycling
- Monthly summary of your routine
Why fitness matters:
Every high-altitude trek comes with a set of challenges. Steep ascents and descents, uneven terrain, snow walks, stream crossings, pass crossings, and summit climb. Even the easiest of treks have some of these challenges if not all of them. Without fitness, trekkers struggle, get injured easily, lag behind, or simply fail to complete the trek.
At Indiahikes, we take pride in the fact that our trekkers are among the fittest in the country. Those who do not meet the fitness requirements are often sent back. Our philosophy is that trekking and fitness go hand in hand. Without fitness, there’s no trekking.
