When we talk about winter, Brahmatal is the first trek that comes to mind. It is among the first treks after Kedarkantha that we opened as a winter trek at Indiahikes, and boy did trekkers love it. 

Brahmatal is magical in winter. The brown oaks are draped in snow. The small clearings and grasslands resemble snowfields, the frozen lakes are at their serene best. And the sunsets? They're beyond imagination. 

This trek has become our second most popular winter trek over time. The photos below will tell you why. 

Let me take you on a visual journey to Brahmatal in winter!

The Brahmatal trek starts from our Lohajung basecamp. The village welcomes you with stunning views of Mt Nanda Ghunti and Mt Trishul. This is how beautiful the village looks after snowfall: It's all white, with patches of green. Photo by Gayatri Karnik

On the first day of your trek from Lohajung to Gujreni, after about 2 kilometers, you will get breathtaking aerial views of Lohajung village. The pine trees create a stunning contrast against the landscape. Photo by Gayatri Karnik

On your way to Tilandi, you come across this serene lake surrounded by Oak, Pine, and Rhododendron trees. This is Bekaltal. Bekaltal is an oligotrophic lake, replete with algae and surrounded by dense forests. Our trekkers love sitting by the side of the lake and sharing stories. Photo by Prajwal Prabhakar 

The Brahmatal trek has a few of the most exquisite campsites, especially the camp at Tilandi, which remains a talking point for every trekker. “The sunset at Tilandi is an especially wonderful experience. You are above a blanket of clouds. The sun is setting as a huge orange ball in the distance. I’ve seen so many trekkers get contemplative or teary-eyed watching this sunset,” says Dhaval Jajal, a Senior Trek Leader, who has led several teams to Brahmatal. Photo by Chandana Puttalingaiah

The forests on the Brahmatal trek are dense and dark, especially between Bekaltal and Tilandi. These forests give off a woodsy smell. In winter, you will be awed by the sight of the Oak and Rhododendron trees soaked in fresh snow. When you wake up in the morning and open your tents, this is exactly what you witness! As the altitude increases, you get to see Cirrus clouds. These are thin layered clouds that can be found only in high-altitude regions. The sky looks like it has been painted with subtle brush strokes in white. The Cirrus clouds slowly start fading away as the sun comes up. Photo by Satyen Dasgupta

Through this trek, you walk through some of the most magical Oak and Rhododendron forests. The reality of trekking in the winter includes gloomy days with no sunlight for hours together! When you are close to reaching the Jhandi Top, the mountains are hidden behind. After the final climb, the mountains suddenly put up a majestic show and you’re wowed by the views! The Brahmatal Lake is one of the major highlights of the trek. The setting of the lake is so picturesque that you cannot stop admiring its beauty. The lake being situated at an altitude of  12,250 feet, is semi-frozen in the winter with the clouds reflecting on its surface. In some regions, the whole ground is covered in layers of snow, which might be around 2 feet deep. Walking on the snow is not very difficult because it gives a soft cushion underneath your feet and helps you have smooth landings. You don't feel the unevenness of the terrain. The biggest reason to do the Goechala trek is the grand views of the big mountains you see. It’s every trekker’s dream to witness the first rays of the sun falling on the majestic mountains. Our trekker, Soudipan who trekked to Goechala last month shared some wonderful photos with us, and we cannot stop admiring them!

Witnessing the beauty of Kanchenjunga and the serenity of Samiti Lake was a transformative experience for him. Soudipan says “Seeing its splendor in person has always been in my heart, and Goechala, with its reputation for offering one of the finest views of Kanchenjunga in India up close, has been a personal milestone I was determined to reach.”

At 13,670 ft, Dzongri Top is the highest point from which you get a 180-degree panoramic view of the mighty peaks. For most trekkers, Dzongri is a reward on its own. Most trekkers think trekking to the Himalayas is one of the best experiences. But after looking at photos from the Pench Tiger Trail, which our team member Gourab Nandy shared with us, we are in awe! 


The Pench Tiger Trail takes you into one of the most vibrant jungles of India. Trekking inside the buffer zone of Pench National Park is a completely immersive experience. Every step feels alive with the sounds of langurs, glimpses of tiger pugmarks, and intricate spider webs glistening in the light.


When this trek was introduced earlier this year, we didn’t know how it would turn out. But everyone who has gone on the trek has come back loving the experience.

Let us begin with the biggest highlight of the trek, the river walk.

The trek surprises you every day. Walking barefoot alongside the Bawanthadi River, feeling the cool water, and hearing its calming flow, stays with you. Having lunch by the riverbank, surrounded by the wilderness, is a simple yet special experience. The thick forest canopy overhead makes the journey shaded and enjoyable.

There’s another trek that has a river walk: the Chhattisgarh Jungle Trek. But there, the trail is open to the sun, giving you a beachy feeling. However, the river walk in Pench is different. The campsites on the Pench Tiger Trail add to the charm


All our campsites have a unique aspect to it. The first camp at Sakata, tucked near a quiet village, is home to a forest guesthouse from the British era. At Nayegaon Lake Camp, sunsets over the lake are breathtaking, and the night comes alive with jungle sounds. The last camp at Nalyer, with its cosy Swiss tents by a flowing river, offers both comfort and adventure. Seeing camp names inspired by The Jungle Book gives the whole experience a nostalgic touch.

25 Photos That'll Make You Fall in Love with the Pench Tiger Trail

In continuation of the Celebrating India series, I’m back today with another feature that we dearly love: mountain valleys. 

In case you missed yesterday’s email, this Independence Day week, we are celebrating the best landscapes of India. 

As trekkers and not travellers, we have the rare privilege to see and experience the rawest, most gorgeous version of India. 

From the high-altitude Himalayan belt to the forests of Central India, and the rich ghats and beaches of our country, the changes in scenery are unimaginable. 

But still, we rarely get an opportunity to experience all of it. 

That is why, over the next few days, I want to share with you some of the most incredible landscapes in India. I will do it by taking you through some of the best treks in our country, which celebrate these beautiful sceneries. 

I’m intentionally focusing on treks organised by Indiahikes so that you have the avenue to explore these trails. 

Yesterday, we already covered some of the best meadows in India. (Find it here in case you missed it.)

Today, we are talking about the best valleys in India.

"Valleys always have two main features. First, there are the forests. Whether it's the Har Ki Dun Valley or the Rupin Valley, you'll remember the beautiful forests that line the valley. These types of forests thrive in valleys and make them luxuriant. The second feature is the presence of rivers. Almost every valley is home to a river, and as you walk along them, you can't help but form a deep connection with these rivers," said Arjun Majumdar, CEO and Founder of Indiahikes.

Given the expansive mountain ranges in our country, we are fortunate to have some of the most beautiful mountain valleys: from the gentle valleys of J&K to the lush valleys of Himachal and the rugged valleys of Uttarakhand.

I’m jotting down the best valleys we have seen through the lens of Indiahikes treks. Each one of them is in tight competition with the other. 

Har Ki Dun

Har Ki Dun is a classic valley trek in India, often the first to be mentioned in conversations about valleys. 

While most valleys are desolate and void of humans, this trek differs. The hanging villages, the people there, and their traditions are from a time gone by. Their attire, the architecture, and the rituals make time stand still. The villages of Gangaad and Osla leave a lasting impression on you. 

Yet, this is just the start. As you venture deeper, the Har Ki Dun Valley boasts incredible scenic beauty. From the turquoise waters of the river to the pine forests of Boslo, the clearings of Devsu Thatch, and the final walk towards the heavenly Swargarohini Massif, this is among the richest valleys you’ll trek in.

Miyar Valley

In this remote region of Lahaul, a valley filled with flowers hangs quietly, escaping the attention of trekkers. The route to this valley alternates between remote mountain valleys, quaint villages, and flower beds dominated by the overwhelming presence of Himalayan orchids. This is the Miyar Valley.

The S-shaped Miyar Valley sits in between Zanskar and Chamba. It is nearly 75 km long. The Miyar glacier is nearly 36 km long to Kang La (17,600 ft pass to Zanskar). 

At the snout of the glacier are seven crystal-clear blue ponds, considered sacred by Buddhists. Trekking here is a rare opportunity for most trekkers. Doing so in isolation, with very few others on the trail, is a godsend. If you get a chance to trek to Miyar Valley, consider yourself lucky.

Brammah Valley

Brammah Valley is a trek that got a mention in our previous post on meadows, but it is hard not to bring it up here as well. Set in the heart of Kishtwar National Park, this valley blends the beauty of Kashmir with a mountainscape similar to that of Himachal. 

This valley has three things going on, which are hard to resist. First is the stunning view of the four prominent peaks of Kishtwar, all above 6,000 m. Getting so close to such big summits in a valley is rare.

Second are the forests. These are primarily coniferous, with a heady scent wafting through the woods as you trek along. In between are maples, except for a small patch of beautiful silver birch trees just before Kiddar Maidan. The variety of coniferous trees you find on this trek is unmatched. There are Chir pines, Deodars, Abies pin-drows, and spruces. The trees are sometimes so tall that they almost touch the sky. 

Then comes the Nath River, which accompanies you throughout the trek. Even while trekking in the deep forests, you constantly hear the river. The river starts to calm down as you trek deeper into the valley and becomes completely silent when you reach Kiddar Maidan. 

Given that not many people trek here, it is a discovery waiting to be made. It’s our top valley trek of 2024.

Rupin Pass

There’s something about the Rupin Valley. It is not your conventionally beautiful valley. Jagged rocks stick out of the valley walls. The terrain is half-bouldery, half-laden with snow bridges, and half with soft grass. The route is not straightforward; the trail makes sudden turns, with big bursts of climbs and descents. Try and take a picture of the valley, and you will find it hard to make the valley look beautiful. 

But ask any trekker, and they will tell you they left their hearts behind in the Rupin Valley. The sense of connection you form with the Rupin River, the wonderment of walking through the Chir forests, the adventure of crossing the snow bridges, and the thrill of climbing a 1,500-foot waterfall are all unique to the Rupin Valley. 

As you make your way through the final gully and reach the pass, it is with a heavy heart that you leave the Rupin Valley behind. It’s hard to match up to the Rupin Valley in terms of character and personality. Which is what makes it among the personal favorites at Indiahikes.

Valley of Flowers

This list of the best valleys in India would be incomplete without the Valley of Flowers. It’s a favourite among trekkers. 

The valley is incredibly beautiful, with or without flowers. Most trekkers come here for the flowers but end up falling in love with the valley itself. During the middle of the monsoon, the valley is lush green, with mist hanging in the air. It's hard not to fall in love with it.

It's well known that there are over 500 species of flowers in the valley. They don't all bloom at the same time; rather, they bloom in waves over three months. Each wave brings a different ambience to the valley. If you visit in July, August, and September, you'll see three distinct valleys."

Hampta Pass

When we talk about valleys in Himachal Pradesh, Hampta Pass has to be at the top of the list. It is among those treks that boast two valleys, one in either half of the trek. 

“In the first half, you go through a single valley. It’s like a tunnel walled by mountains. Even then, as you trek from Jobra to Jwara and Balu Ka Gera, you see lovely scenery change around you. Charming coniferous forests make way for lush grasslands. In August, these grasslands are a riot of flowers. They could even put the Valley of Flowers to shame,” claims Sandhya.

“Entering the valley beyond Balu Ka Gera is like entering a canyon. It is very thrilling. The interesting part about these scenery changes is that everything happens quickly. Since you’re starting the trek at an already high altitude (9,400 ft), you’re out of the tree line within an hour. You walk in the grasslands for a day, and the very next day you get into the alpine terrain. The scenery changes are rapid,” she adds.

On the other side of the pass is another isolated valley in Lahaul, with the Chandrabhaga River meandering through. Both of these valleys are so in contrast with each other that it’s hard to believe they are only a few hundred metres apart. The dramatic change in landscape is stunning.

About halfway through the 2nd day of the trek you enter a walled valley. On one side of the valley are the rock faces and on the other end is the river below. Once you cross the river, you are at Jwara where nature is at her dramatic best. Picture by Pritish Bhanushali.

Pin Bhaba Pass

Unknown to most, on the Pin Bhaba Pass trek, you not only walk through two valleys but five! 

“You trek through four completely different valleys before you get to the pass!” says Sandhya. “There’s the Kafnu valley, Muling valley, Khara valley, and Phutsirang valley. In each of these valleys, the scenery is different,” she adds. 

“There’s a big elevation change from one valley to another. So the landscape is constantly changing around you as you trek,” he says.

Unlike Hampta Pass, you start the Pin Bhaba Pass at a lower altitude of 7,800 feet at Kafnu. This allows you a whole day of trekking through some stunning forests towards Muling. Even after that, as you turn into different valleys, the landscape takes on different colours and different forms.

The river keeps changing, too. Different shapes of mountains surround you. So within the first half of the trek, there’s a lot of variety, so much so that it feels like you have done four different treks even before getting on the pass!

On the other hand, when you cross the Pin Bhaba Pass and trek towards Mudh, it’s all about the colours. “The colours of Spiti astound you,” says Sandhya.

“There were several moments when I had to pause while trekking to simply take in the flabbergasting colours around,” she adds. “There’s no vegetation at all. It is barren and stark. Yet you’re looking at innumerable hues of pink, purple, brown, orange and red.”

“The fascinating part is that these colours don’t merge. They come in belts. There’s a purple belt, a pink belt and there’s an orange belt. They’re very distinct from one another,” says Sandhya.

The grandeur of the valleys of the Pin Bhaba Pass is on another scale altogether.

Warwan Valley

Here’s another valley that is in a league of its own. The Warwan Valley is exceptionally stunning. Even if you have travelled to Kashmir before and seen Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and other places Kashmir offers, you are still going to be bowled over by the setting of Warwan Valley. 

The valley’s remoteness and isolation compound this beauty. 

What makes getting into Warwan Valley even more remarkable is the crossover trail from the Ladakhi terrain. It begins in trans-Himalayan settings, among barren, purplish mountains around Panikhar. The trail goes through an oasis, river deltas, wildflower meadows, and glaciers—all among these stark mountains. It makes for hauntingly beautiful settings. As the trail slowly moves into the luxuriant greenery of Kashmir after days of being surrounded by desert mountains, the effect is striking.

There is no trek you would have done before this one that can match the experience of Warwan Valley. And there will be no trek you do after this that comes close. This might sound like a strong statement to make. However, our founders, who documented this trek in 2015, still stand by it.

Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley, which we run in a DIY style, must get a mention here. The significance is that the Gurez is the last latitude of India, which is why it is very unlike any other part of Kashmir. The topography changes even though it is only 6 hours north of Srinagar. You will notice it in the trees, the valleys, the grasslands, the lakes and the campsites too.  

The Razdan pass you cross to get to Gurez pushes you into a very different landscape. In fact, our trek in Gurez reminds us more of our treks in Kyrgyzstan and Georgia than they do of our treks in Kashmir -- so different is the landscape. We feel we are in a different locale, even though we are in Kashmir. The scenery is spectacularly unusual. 

If you have adventure in your heart, then this is a valley you must go to, especially trekking DIY style.

I've noticed that while most novice trekkers are drawn to summits, experienced hikers have a fondness for valleys. It takes patience and wisdom to appreciate a valley. 

There are many other beautiful valleys in India that we haven't had a chance to mention, such as Nafran Valley in Kashmir and Beas Kund in Himachal Pradesh. However, this list barely does justice to the magnificent valleys of India.

#2 of 4: Celebrating the Valleys of India

There are very few ridge treks that we know of. Most treks have short ridge walks, but you rarely come across a trek where the main highlight is the ridge. That's why we love the Phulara Ridge trek. 

We love this trek not only for its ridge walk, but also for the endless views of the Garhwal Himalayas. On your left, the Thamsa valley stretches from Sankri to Har Ki Dun, and on your right, meadows roll in several layers to Yamunotri.  

When I went on this trek, the ridge walk completely blew my mind and stirred so many overwhelming emotions within me. It was truly a surreal feeling to be at eye-level with the mountains. 

Rich in beauty and culture, the Phulara Ridge trek offers the most rewarding experience. Here are some of our favourite aspects of the trek that we would like to share with you through this photo story. 

1. Your trek starts from Kotgaon, one of the most unusual villages you'll visit

The peaceful village of Kotgaon welcomes you after a long and exhausting journey from Dehradun. A small, simple, yet very warm town holds the most mesmerising views on clear sunny days. 

Beware though, what looks this charming, can be equally harsh. Our team has named the village "Coldgaon" because of how cold it gets. The sun touches the village for barely a few hours a day, giving it this infamous name.

Kotgaon is situated in a place where the Garhwal ranges meet the Kinnauri region. Hence this village has a blend of traditions from Uttarakhand as well as Himachal, giving it a unique character.

When the evening winds set on the town of Kotgaon, all the children come out to play and have a gala time. You may come across locals playing cricket, offering you the chance to join in. When I was at Kotgaon, I enjoyed a fun game of cricket with the locals and we played till we could see the last light of day. Photo by Jothiranjan

2. Visit the Someshwar Temple, an ancient temple with fascinating stories

This Someshwar temple is the heart of the village. The temple, which the Swargharohini massif overlooks, is a significant component of Kotgaon's culture and beliefs. It is also among the most photogenic temples you’ll see. 

When you’re here, notice the architecture of the temple. It is made by alternating wood and stone, following what is called the “Kathkuni” style of architecture. Ask locals about their traditions and stories and they will happily share their stories with you. 

3. Your first view of the Swargarohini Massif, a mountain you'll form a close bond with on this trek

As you start your trek from Kotgaon the road twists and turns, but welcomes you with a grand view of Swargarohini and Ranglana peaks with every step that you take.  Photo by Jothiranjan

4. Exploring the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park 

When you step into the jungle, the fallen, dry leaves crunch beneath your shoes. The trail is a steady ascent as the scent of Himalayan cedar fills the air, leaving you quite literally breathless.

5. Juda Ka Talab, where stories come alive

Those who have trekked to Kedarkantha from Sankri have surely encountered Juda ka Talab, a serene lake tucked away amidst pine trees. 

The local guides eagerly recount intriguing stories about the lake's origins, including one that attributes its creation to Shiva, who supposedly formed it by unravelling locks of his hair, and the drops that fell from it, formed the lake. 

After briefly stopping here for a while, you will head towards Sikolta, the first campsite on the trek. 

6. Wake up for a sunrise right out of a movie at Sikolta campsite

Just 500 metres from the campsite, the forest clears up to a lush green meadow with grand views of Swargharohini and Hata Peak. Waking up early in the morning and witnessing the sunrise from here is a must do. Most trekkers sleep in and miss this amazing sight, but not you. Now that you've heard about it, you can witness one of the most beautiful sunrises on this trek.


7. A Grand Welcome To The Meadows of Bhoj Gadi

As you trek towards Bhoj Gadi, the tree line is left behind and you enter the vast meadows sprawling across the mountains. Here you will have the first glimpses of patches of yellow marsh marigold and purple lilies blooming around. 

The Bhoj Gadi Campsite boasts green meadows right by the tree line and sunset views that bring out the different colours of the sky. Here is what Arjun Sir had to say when he camped at Bhoj Gadi.

“We camped at a pretty meadow called Bhoj Gadi. In the evening with a golden light on our backs, a small stream flowing close by, colours of the sky changing to orange, we cooked our meal on the open ground. I couldn’t have asked for a better setting to camp.”


8. Feel On Top Of The World As You Walk Along The Ridge!

Walking on the Phulara Ridge is a surreal experience, especially when you are trekking for almost 4-5 hrs on the ridge! It feels like you are walking on a tightrope. On one side, there's a steep drop into a valley, while on the other, there are these endless green meadows dotted with colourful flowers. 

Walking on the ridge at 12,000ft with the views of Kedarkantha in the backdrop, along with the peaks of Hanuman Top, Sarutal Top, DKD, Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, Swargarohini, Hata Peak, Ranglana, Devkyara valley, Lekha Top and Vijay Top, all standing tall around you, almost makes it feel like the mountains are walking with you. As Arjun sir describes it, “walking on the ridge is almost like a stairway to heaven.” 


9. An Evening Full Of Views And Ghost Stories At Pushtara Campsite

As you walk down from the ridge to the meadows, you'll spot patches of wildflowers, urging you to pause and click a couple of pictures. 

As you continue to descend, you'll reach Pushtara. For many of us at Indiahikes, the Pushtara meadows are in the top highlights of this trek. "The first site of the Pushtara meadows reminded me of Bedni Bugyal on the Roopkund trek. The meadow was curved with folds of green carpet and wildflowers spread out as far as your eyes could see. It was beautiful!" says Suhas Saya, who explored this trek.

You get almost everything on this trek! A perfectly stitched combination of meadows, forest trails, narrow ridges and breathtaking views from all sides throughout the trail. 

We really believe that the Phulara Ridge trek will craft lasting memories and leave you with stories that you'll cherish forever.

The Warwan Valley Trek has been fast gaining popularity among trekkers for its challenging yet fulfilling landscapes. You start the trek at the picturesque village of Panikhar, crossing rivers and glaciers. You camp at stunning campsites with wildflowers blooming all around. Walk through endless meadows, finally ending your journey after exploring the culture of old Kashmir at Sukhnai and Chaudraiman.

Our first group of trekkers went for Warwan Valley Trek on 17th July 2022. Luckily, they had perfect weather, and the photos they brought back from the trek blew us all away! The cross-over trail with its barren, purplish mountains and adventurous glacial walks ending with the green valleys of Kashmir - Warwan Valley is truly the most stunning trek in our country. Panikhar village in Suru Valley is full of farms and fields. This is also where the trek starts.  

Camping at the Delta basin of Denora. Denora is the confluence of two rivers. You will witness multiple meadows between the rivers, each lusher than the other.
