Best time to do the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek

Category Guides To Choose Treks Month Wise Guides

The Pin Bhaba Pass trek is one of the most thrilling high-altitude treks you can do in Himachal Pradesh. You start in the lush green forests and meadows of Kinnaur, and by the end, you’re standing in the cold, desert-like region of Spiti. The contrast in landscapes is so stark, you’ll feel like you’ve trekked through two completely different worlds.

But here’s the thing — this trek has a very short window when you can actually do it. So, timing your trek right is crucial.

When Should You Do the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek?

The best time to do the Pin Bhaba Pass trek is between July and mid-September.

This is the only period when conditions are ideal for both safety and experience. And here’s why you should plan it during this time:

1. The Pass Crossing Is Safest and Most Doable

Before July and after mid-September, the trail, especially near the pass, is usually buried under deep snow. Trekking then becomes extremely difficult, risky, and in many cases, you won’t even be able to complete the pass crossing.

But between July and mid-September, the snow melts enough to make the route navigable and safe, without making it too easy — you’ll still get the thrill of a high-altitude crossing, just without the technical risks that snow brings.

2. Kinnaur Valley Comes Alive During the Monsoon

You might assume monsoon is a bad time to trek — but not here.

During this window, the Kinnaur side of the trail turns lush and vibrant. The forests are greener, the meadows are bursting with wildflowers, and the mist rolling in over the mountains creates a magical atmosphere.

You’ll find yourself walking through meadows carpeted with green and dotted with tiny, colourful flowers. It’s a rare and unforgettable experience that only this season offers.

3. You Get Flexibility in Travel Plans

This is also the time when both exit routes from the trek are open — either through Shimla or Manali. After crossing the pass and entering Spiti, you can choose to exit via Manali, and if you do, you can even visit the beautiful Chandratal Lake.

This flexibility opens up more travel options for you and lets you extend your journey into Spiti with ease.

Why You Shouldn’t Trek Outside This Window

Before July and after mid-September, the snow becomes a major barrier. The high-altitude sections of the trail, especially near the pass, are covered in deep snow, and many teams find themselves turning back without completing the trek.

Unlike Uttarakhand or Sikkim, snow in Himachal tends to linger longer and pile up in critical sections. Trekking in this period isn’t just difficult — it’s unsafe and often unsuccessful.
