We have an important update on the Valley of Flowers and Himachal treks, based on the latest government advisory and ground reports.

For August 11th groups, the trek route is closed. Teams are currently stationed in Rishikesh, with accommodation and food fully arranged. Reroute options are actively being explored.

For August 12th and 13th groups, trekkers will be redirected to an alternate trek in Himachal.

For August 14th and 15th groups, plans hinge on the route reopening. If it opens, the trek will proceed as scheduled. If not, these teams will also move to Himachal.

A roadblock near Karnaprayag has been reported. Clearance is expected within the hour. Our teams remain in constant contact with trekkers currently held up there.

Refunds & Vouchers:
Trekkers who choose not to switch to another trek will receive trek vouchers. Those who have opted for the Indiahikes Shield and prefer a refund will receive the full amount.

Hampta Pass, Chandrakhani Pass, Bhrigu Lake: The Mandi–Kullu National Highway is open. All Manali slope treks are running on schedule.

We are tracking the situation closely and will share the next update the moment there is a change. Traffic remains slow in some stretches — trekkers are advised to keep buffer hours in hand while travelling.

We have an important update for our trekkers! Indiahikes is now officially registered with the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) under the ‘Tour Operators’ category. This brings a valuable benefit for those trekking with us—you can now apply for IMF approvals through us.

Note: This applies only for trekkers who have booked a trek with us and are registered on our website.

IMF approvals can be beneficial for trekkers, especially professionals working in the Government Sector. With this approval, you may be able to:

Avail Special Casual Leaves if your workplace recognizes IMF certifications.

Have an official acknowledgment of your trek from a recognized mountaineering body.

Strengthen your trekking profile for future high-altitude expeditions.

Note: Please check with your workplace regarding whether IMF Certifications are recognized for Special Casual Leaves. The Special Casual Leaves Policy is applicable only for Government of India Employees. Also, you must apply for this before your trek starts. Applying for a certificate after you have finished your trek is not allowed.

We apply on your behalf, making the process simple and hassle-free. The IMF charges a processing fee of Rs. 250/- per application, which we collect from you before submitting the request.

Once submitted, IMF takes 15-18 days to process the application. To avoid delays, we recommend applying well in advance before your trek

While we handle the application process, we are not responsible for approvals or rejections. The decision is entirely up to the IMF. If your application is rejected, the cost has to be borne by you.

Once approved, you will receive a confirmation certificate from the IMF. From that point, it is up to you to use the approval as needed.

After last week's heavy rains, the weather has relented this week. All trekkers are safe and largely carrying on with their treks as scheduled. Here is a region-wise update to keep you in the loop about all our current treks. 

Last week, Himachal Pradesh saw the worst of the rainfall. Many roads were blocked, rivers overflowed and campsites flooded. 

This week, we have good news. Our treks to Hampta Pass, Chandrakhani Pass, Bhrigu Lake, Miyar Valley, Pin Bhaba Pass, Bijli Mahadev, are all running as scheduled. In fact, just today, we have opened four more groups to Hampta Pass in September, to accommodate multiple requests from trekkers. 

As for the Beas Kund trek, Indiahikes took a safety call last week and diverted trekkers to Bhrigu Lake. Given that there are several river-side trails and campsites on the trek, we found it unsafe to head out to Beas Kund last week. Our team will conduct a recce of the trail this week, and take a final call on the upcoming group, based on the status of the trekking trail and campsites. 

The local administrative officials are issuing permits only at the very last minute, keeping a watchful eye on the weather forecast. But they have handed permissions for all groups starting this week. 

We will keep you constantly updated if there are any changes in the schedule. 


In continuation with the status of the past few weeks, officials are still not issuing permits to Tarsar Marsar, Nafran Valley, and Tulian Lake. They have requested time until tomorrow (August 7th) to reassess the safety situation in the region and issue permits for trekking in the region. 

Kashmir Great Lakes, Warwan Valley, Gurez Valley and Pir Panjal Lakes continue to run smoothly as scheduled. 

The Bodpathri Trek remains closed with no real signs of opening up in terms of permissions. 

We are expecting Brammah Valley to run as scheduled, given that is scheduled only from mid-September onwards. 

In Uttarakhand, the Valley of Flowers trek continues to run smoothly, albeit with small weather disruptions. All of the treks have been running on schedule and trekkers are thoroughly enjoying the experience of trekking in the valley. 

We are looking forward to the next month, when at least 10 other treks open up in Uttarakhand. With lesser rainfall and clearer weather, it's going to be magical trekking with clear views of the Garhwal Himalayas.

First, why do we have unexpected call-offs: Most of our trek cancellations usually occur due to two of these unforeseen circumstances:

The government withdraws permission to trek at the last moment. 

Weather or road conditions become unsuitable for trekking.

Pre-Trek Expenses: You may not know but most of our trek expenses are incurred well before you even arrive at our base camp. These include:

Support Team Commitment: Our core team isn't the only one involved in ensuring your trek's success. We have a dedicated group of ancillary support staff, including muleteers, porters, and transporters, who are committed to work only with Indiahikes. 

Continued Expenses: When an unexpected trek call-off occurs, our expenses don't just stop; they continue to accrue. Salaries are continuing to be paid. The livelihood of many depends on it:

The ground staff who are ready to take you on the trek

Experience coordinators who help you prepare for months

The rest of the Indiahikes team, who work tirelessly to create your trek experience

This is why we are unable to refund any trek fee to you when a trek gets called off. The bulk of the expenses have already been made or committed to. 

However, we are committed to you: We feel terrible when your trek is called off. We understand the months of preparation you put into it. While we cannot refund your trek fee, we want to ensure you still have a fulfilling experience. 

Arrange for an alternative trek in a nearby region so your flight tickets are not wasted.

If that is not possible, we issue a 100 percent voucher for your trek fee, which you can use for future treks.

Treks inherently involve uncertainties. Somehow these uncertainties have increased with climate change. Extreme weather is disrupting treks in greater frequency. 

Also, the government has started to play more controlling roles in how treks are run. Unlike earlier, if the government feels the safety of trekkers are likely to be compromised, they withhold permissions. 

It's best to be mentally prepared for these uncertainties before registering for a trek.

We understand how much effort, time, and heart you put into preparing for these treks. The excitement of planning and the anticipation of the trek are things all of us are familiar with. We are trekkers ourselves. When things don't go as planned, it can feel like all that effort was in vain.

Why We Don’t Refund You When There is an Unexpected Shutdown of Your Trek

July 10th, 2024, 3:00 p.m.: Until 11th July, no trekkers will be permitted to go on the Tarsar Marsar, Nafran Valley, and Bodpathri treks.

The District Administration of Pahalgam has restricted trekking in the region. The Budgam district has also retracted permissions to trek in the area. The government seems to have taken this call as a safety measure in light of the current unrest in J&K.

Trekkers who are already on their way to Srinagar or in the base camp are being diverted to other treks in J&K, which are running smoothly.

Four of our treks in J&K are permitted to run as scheduled: Kashmir Great Lakes, Pir Panjal Lakes, Warwan Valley and Tulian Lake.

Permissions temporarily retracted for 3 treks in Jammu & Kashmir due to unrest in the region 

Landslides cleared on the way to Valley of Flowers. Traffic now running smoothly. 

July 15th, 3:00 p.m.: In a wave of good news for trekkers, landslides have been cleared from the NH7 route from Rishikesh to Valley of Flowers. 

The major landslide that occurred on July 10th took a long time to clear because of the size of the boulders. Smaller walking routes were established by Saturday, but it took a while to clear the road. As of today, the landslide debris has been cleared and traffic is moving smoothly. 

If you have an upcoming trek to Valley of Flowers, please keep in mind that this highway is prone to landslides. They are regular occurrences that come with the monsoon. These landslides are usually cleared off within a day, but they may cause long delays in your travel. 

In case of such delays, we make small shifts in your itinerary. We accommodate most of the itinerary shifts within your travel plan, but in case of any major delays, it’s best to have a buffer day in your travel plan. So please plan your travel accordingly.

Uttarakhand, July 11th 2024, 10:30 am: As per our latest reports one of the minor landslides on the NH7 highway between Rishikesh and Badrinath has been cleared. 

But the landslide that struck the day before yesterday, approximately 3 km before Joshimath is yet to be cleared. Because of the size of the fallen boulders, the authorities are finding it challenging to clear the area. 

A small walking trail across the landslide zone has been established to allow trekkers and yatris to cross on foot. 

However, this could also get closed to allow uninterrupted repair work. In such a case, trekkers and yatris will be taking a 3 km route through the forests above the landslide zone. 

The Indiahikes local team is stationed at the zone to receive trekkers who are incoming and also to support trekkers who are heading back from the trek. 

We expect the landslide to be cleared by the time the next team travels towards the basecamp, on July 13th.

Second minor landslide occurs on Valley of Flowers route at Pipalkoti

Pipalkoti, Uttarakhand, July 10th 2024, 2.41 pm: There's been another minor landslide at Pipalkoti on the NH7 route. 

The good thing is that as fast as landslides happen, they are cleared off as quickly. This particular one is expected to be cleared in the next 2 hours. 

If it is not cleared for any reason, the trekking group departing on July 10th will stay at Pipalkoti for the night and carry on with the trek tomorrow. 

There are no issues on the actual Valley of Flowers trail. The route is clear and open to trek.

Landslide on NH7 Temporarily Disrupts Travel to Valley of Flowers Trek

Joshimath, Uttarakhand, July 10th 2024, 11.36 am: A landslide occurred earlier today on NH7, approximately 3 kilometers before Joshimath. This route is used by trekkers traveling from Rishikesh to Karchi, the basecamp for Indiahikes' Valley of Flowers trek. It is also the national highway leading to Badrinath.

Authorities immediately initiated efforts to clear the landslide zone. However, the scale of the landslide may cause delays.

Here are updates from our current groups: 

Trekkers departing July 9th were stationed at a hotel 3-4 km from the landslide zone last night. They will take a 3-kilometer detour on foot to Dhak, from where they will stay for the night and carry on with the trek tomorrow.

Trekkers departing on July 10th, will either (a) carry on to the basecamp if the landslide is cleared OR (b) Stay at the designated hotel and carry on to Dhak tomorrow.

If you’re headed to Valley of Flowers, it’s best to include a buffer day in your travel plan, to account for any such disruptions.

Joshimath, Uttarakhand, July 10, 2024: A landslide occurred earlier today on NH7, approximately 3 kilometers before Joshimath.

After eight days of high adventure, great weather, and breathtaking views, the first group of Bali Pass trekkers for this year successfully completed the trek and returned to the base camp yesterday. This is a huge moment for both the trekkers and the Indiahikes team, as crossing the pass above 16,000 ft is no easy feat. 

Here are some of the highlights that our trekkers experienced on this trek:

There was a lot of adventure on this trek, be it walking on a knife edge ridge, or crossing the Ruinsara river using Tyrolean traverse. The technicality required on this trek was a daring experience in itself. 

The clear weather offered continuous views of the grand Swargarohini massif.

The pass crossing was exhilarating, even though there was less snowfall this year. 

The unexpected, dense, green forests after crossing the pass near Lower Damini, added to the trek's beauty. 

One major challenge on this trek was the descent from the ridge. The lack of snow made the trail tricky with many boulders and stones, straining trekkers' knees and ankles. However, with the technical support, collaboration, and effort of the entire team, the trekkers completed the trek safely and successfully. 

Trek leader Amit Gupta was extremely happy with the way the entire team came together and worked as one to make it a wholesome experience. He said, "Care is something which came out from each team member. Thanks to the overall team effort, they could help each other across difficult sections by holding hands, carrying backpacks on tricky parts, and guiding the trekkers through their fears.” 

With a fantastic start to the 2024 Bali Pass season, we look forward to trekkers enjoying a smooth and rewarding experience in the upcoming group. 

At Indiahikes, we always wanted to open more treks that are high on adventure. While the Bali Pass is highly adventurous, it comes with a limited trekking window due to weather conditions. Keeping this in mind, to give trekkers an equally adventurous experience, we have opened more groups to the only other pass crossing trek that goes above 16,000 ft -  Pin Bhaba Pass. The trek is also accessible for a longer duration from July through August.

Trek Update: The First Group Of Bali Pass Trekkers Successfully Complete The Trek

After a lot of anticipation, we are finally starting the Manali trekking season from today. The trekkers for Beas kund, Bhrigu lake and Hampta Pass are all geared up and stoked to kick start the season. 

Trekkers have already started reaching their respective basecamps, although there is near record breaking traffic in Manali. So trekkers, ensure that you have enough time in your hands to reach your basecamps. 

We are as excited and thrilled as you are to start this season and fingers crossed, have a smooth run till September.

Dec 15, 6:00 p.m.: We are noticing that more and more trekkers are bringing warmers/warmees on treks, so much so that we have had to ban them on our treks. Here's why.

Warmers, also known as hand warmers or pocket warmers, are small packets that are activated by shaking or pressing and generate heat to keep the hands or other body parts warm. Warmees are similar, but they are larger and intended to be worn on the body, such as in a jacket or pants. These are often used by outdoor enthusiasts to stay warm in cold environments. However, there are several reasons why it is important to avoid using warmers or warmees on a trek.

First, warmers and warmees rely on chemical reactions to generate heat, which can have negative environmental impacts. These chemicals can leach into the soil and water, causing long-term damage to ecosystems. In addition, the packaging for these products is often not environmentally friendly and can contribute to waste and litter in the mountains.

Second, they are unreliable and can potentially cause harm. The heat generated by these products is not always consistent, and can sometimes stop working or become too hot to use. This can be a problem in cold environments where reliable warmth is essential for survival. In addition, some warmers and warmees can cause burns or other injuries if they are not used properly.

Third, warmers and warmees are not a long-term solution for staying warm in the outdoors. They only provide temporary heat. Instead of relying on these, it is important to use proper clothing, insulation, and other gear to stay warm and comfortable in cold environments.

Here are some of the alternatives to warmers:

You can use a simple plastic or steel water bottle and fill it up with hot water. (Do not use a flask.)

Use hot water bags. Either bring your own or rent it from our rentals page. They are available on the campsite for emergencies only.

In all the common spaces (the dining tent and the kitchen tent) in our campsites, we have introduced the traditional heat-generating system called ‘Angithi’.  Here, heat is generated by burning coal. 

“These things work in the same way, as would a warmer. I feel when we already have an alternative, there is really no need to buy other items,” said Senior Trek Leader Diptarka Gupta.

Many trekkers questioned this practice of banning warmers on treks. A few trekkers even mentioned that we should allow them. But they don’t realise the massive difference they make using alternative sources for warmth.

By not getting warmers and warmees, trekkers not only help us leave the mountains better but also the flora, fauna and people of the region. Through our experience, we have observed that proper layering has always worked better than anything else. 

Sustainability has always been at the heart of everything we do. We want everyone to trek in a way where we not only leave no trace, but leave the mountains better than we found them. This extends to everyone working at Indiahikes and our trekkers too. And we strive to do this sustainably.

By not getting warmers and warmees, trekkers not only help us in leaving the mountains better, but also the flora, fauna and people of the region. Through our experience, we have observed that proper layering has always worked better than anything else.

Are Warmers / warmees safe for you and the environment?

Dec 11, 12:00 p.m.: We have opened two new groups to the Mount Kilimanjaro trek in March and August 2024. These groups start on March 3rd and August 11th respectively. 

Given that there is an incredibly high demand for the Mount Kilimanjaro trek, we don’t expect these groups to remain open for long. So register soon if the Mount Kilimanjaro trek has been on your list of treks to do.

Due to Mount Kilimanjaro's proximity to the equator, this region does not experience the extremes of winter and summer but rather dry and wet seasons. January to mid-March is usually dry, warm, and clear, with light, unannounced rain showers. On the other hand, July and August are the coldest months in Kilimanjaro. These months are ideal to do the trek as there is no cloud cover with fewer chances of rain and snowfall. 

Kilimanjaro is one of the most celebrated treks in the world, despite being a difficult trek. The trail, though difficult, is beautiful with diverse terrains and climatic zones. Trekkers go through cultivated fields, moorlands, rainforests, deserts, snowfields, and glaciers—"so it is adventure mixed with dramatic changes in terrain. Therefore, fitness is the most important criterion to be approved to do this trek,” said Nandana Kamasani, Head of Experience Coordination at Indiahikes.

We have opened two new groups to the Mount Kilimanjaro trek in March and August 2024. These groups start on March 3rd and August 11th respectively.

On November 18, 2023, Indiahikes, in collaboration with Decathlon, hosted a workshop for the trekkers in Bangalore. While we regularly conduct online meetings with our trekkers to prepare them, this was the first face-to-face meeting we were hosting. 

"While around 200 trekkers expressed interest in the workshop, we were wondering how many of them would actually turn up. We were surprised that a whopping 124 members not only came but actively participated in the workshop," expresses Nandana, head of experience coordination at Indiahikes.  

During the workshop, our expert facilitator, Ravi Ranjan, ran trekkers through important information on "how to prepare for a winter trek," covering key aspects of layering, fitness, packing, and traveling, including rare tips that only someone with 5 years of trek leadership expertise can share. 

Trekkers found the event to be extremely helpful. "I feel more confident about my preparation for the trek!” said a trekker. 

At Indiahikes, we love meeting our trekkers, but we rarely get a chance to do so before their treks. Community meet-ups have always been a pipe dream. But it looks to us like trekkers love such workshops. We hope to conduct more such workshops, not only in Bangalore but across the country. The latter half of December is a great time to be on the Sandakphu-Phalut trek. At this time, you get to witness some incredibly sharp views of the highest mountains in the world.

Trekkers know this. So most of our December groups are already full. But new requests from trekkers are consistently pouring in. 

Honestly, we do not want trekkers to miss out on trekking in this incredible season. Apart from the stunning mountain views, it’s a golden time to witness some stellar sunsets and sunrises in the eastern Himalayas.

Why we were compelled to open new December groups for Sandakphu-Phalut

Lots of worried calls are pouring in from trekkers' families after last night's earthquake in Nepal. The good news is that all our teams in Uttarakhand and Sandakphu (West-Bengal) and Goechala (Sikkim) report that they felt no tremors on the treks. They are all safe and continuing on their treks.

Some of our team members in Delhi felt tremors in their homes for 30 seconds. With the epicentre of the earth quake being in Dhime in Nepal, it looks like the effects were mostly felt towards the South-western part of the region.

There are increasing number of earth quakes in the Himalayan region these days. The good thing is that our trekkers are mostly camping outdoors in tents and are safe. At our basecamps, they are in our own campuses in Swiss tents. "We have intentionally not created concrete / multi-level structures at our campuses, knowing that the frequency of earth quakes is increasing," says Manisha Hegde, our in-house architect who has designed our campuses.

Nepal Earthquake: Our teams in Uttarakhand and West Bengal report no tremors felt

Oct 20, 12.00 p.m.: The recent team of Phulara Ridge that started trekking on Oct 15, was hit by unexpected heavy snowfall on their trek. 

“It snowed continuously for 6-7 hours on the trek at Bhoj Gadi. The entire landscape was covered in a heavy blanket of snow. We were expecting the weather to be bad, but so much snowfall was unexpected,” shares Trek Leader Zonal N. 

Next day, the team got a small window of good weather. So they decided to push for the highest point on the trek at 12,345 ft. 

“Crossing the ridge and descending to Pushtara wasn’t an option. Fresh snow had made the trail risky. But we wanted to trek to the highest point of the ridge at least,” Zonal shares. 

Heavy, unexpected snowfall increased the difficulty level of the trek. While all team members were not able to make it, 8 out of 19 trekkers, along with the Indiahikes Team trekked to the highest point and came back the same route. 

All trekkers enjoyed the challenges of this particular Phulara Ridge trek. They came back with deep learning and gratitude for the small luxuries and conveniences of life. They felt triumphant for successfully braving the challenges that the weather threw at them. 

No one has seen Phulara Ridge buried under so much snow. But this spirited group witnessed this unexpected yet spectacular sight. It’s left them with memories of a lifetime!

It's been raining since the past few days in the Sandakphu region. There were three groups on the trek, and all of them are safe. They are carrying on with the trek as scheduled. The group that is scheduled to start the trek tomorrow is also starting as scheduled.

First group to Sandakphu-Phalut completes the trek

Here are the group-wise updates from the Sandakphu-Phalut trek:

Sept 29: This group has completed the trek and is back at the base camp at 10.30 a.m. this morning, Sepi.

Sept 30: This group is moving towards Gurdum today. They will be back to Sepi by tomorrow.

Oct 1: This group is moving towards Sandakphu today. Yesterday, they couldn’t trek to Phalut due to heavy rains. So they stayed put at Molley. They are expected to return to Sepi by Oct 7.

The travel route for Sandakphu-Phalut trekkers is clear. It is unaffected by yesterday's flash floods between Jorethang and Siliguri. But trekkers may face some delays caused by traffic due to heavy rains.

Heavy rains at Sandakphu: Trekkers safe and on schedule

Following a cloudburst in Sikkim, the Teesta river has flooded multiple regions in Sikkim. This has affected trekkers headed to Goechala, who were forced to take a diversion to reach the basecamp. The trekking trail, however, is completely safe from the floods.

“The flash floods disrupted the route going via Malli between Siliguri and Joerethang. But there is an alternate route—via Darjeeling—that connects Siliguri to Jorethang. Our transport coordinator has confirmed that it is possible to reach Yuksom through this route,” shares Slope Manager Gourab Nani.

“This detour adds approximately 30 km to their journey, and it will take them about 1.5 hours more to reach Yuksom. But it’s a good alternative to reach Yuksom,” shares Caroline Mathew, Experience Coordinator for Goechala and Sandakphu-Phalut treks.
