A Complete Guide to the Chincholi Forest Trek
Even though this trek is closer to Hyderabad than Bangalore, the forest actually comes under the purview of the Karnataka Forest Department. You need to get permissions from the Aranya Vihaara Website. It is listed as the Chandrampalli Nature Trail under Kalaburagi District.
Located in the Kalaburagi district at the Easternmost tip of Karnataka, this trek winds through the forests of Chincholi Wildlife Sanctuary — South India’s first dryland wildlife sanctuary. Though often overlooked in favour of more popular treks in the Western Ghats, Chincholi provides a refreshingly offbeat and deeply rewarding experience, especially during the monsoon season.
A major highlight of the trek is the picturesque Chandrampalli Dam, built across the Mullamari, one of the main tributaries of the Bhima River. The surrounding forest serves as a vital catchment area, nourishing this river system, especially during the monsoon.
Interestingly, this forested region was once under the control of the erstwhile Hyderabad Deccan princely state, governed by the Nizam.
The trail itself is moderately challenging, weaving through a variety of landscapes like rocky paths, thick teak groves, and open grasslands.
In the monsoon, the landscape turns lush and green. The wide riverbed, usually dry in summer, fills with flowing water. It is bordered by large rock formations and shaded by tall trees.
Chincholi is also extremely rich in biodiversity. Along the trail, you’re likely to spot reptiles, colourful butterflies, frogs, vibrant forest flowers, and hear the constant chorus of birds echoing through the trees.
It makes the perfect quick getaway from city life, and reconnect with nature.

Can beginners attempt the Chincholi Forest Trek? The Chincholi Forest Trek is well-suited for beginners, terrain wise. However, it is quite long. If you are in the regular habit of walking long distances, its the perfect trek for you to start with. It is also a great trek for children and families. There is a shorter version of this trail as well, which may suit you in case you are trekking with really young children.
➤What to Watch out for
1) The Varied Forest Trail:
After the initial section, the trail dives into a beautiful tropical dry deciduous to mixed deciduous forest. This catchment area for the Mullamari river is known for iconic tree species such as Teak, Axlewood, and Indian Blackwood. You may also spot wild custard apple trees growing along the edges of the trail, especially in the more open and rocky stretches.
The route offers a lot of variety from narrow forest paths hugging the river and uneven laterite rock to wide, sun-drenched clearings. The ever-shifting mix of shade, light, and terrain makes the trail feel rich, layered, and full of surprises,
2) The Riverbed Crossing
This is one of the trek’s most striking segments. The wide, open riverbed filled with flowing water during the monsoon, feels raw and dramatic. Massive rocks, water rushing through channels, and the sound of nature in full force create an unforgettable atmosphere. Along the banks, you’ll notice graceful Arjuna trees with their broad canopies and overhanging branches, often leaning protectively over the water, an icon of riverine ecosystems in this region. It’s a great place to take a short break, click pictures, or simply take it all in.
3) Views from the Top
While the most of the trail is on undulating terrain, this climb to the viewpoint is a little exerting. But it opens up to beautiful panoramic views of forested hills and distant water bodies, making the trek even more rewarding.
