Today we’re sharing with you some of the best backpacks to buy for your trek. We’ve put this post together because we get several emails asking for backpack recommendations.

Lots of trekkers ask us at Indiahikes for a "buying guide" of trekking gear. They want to know exactly which backpack to buy so that they don’t end up making wrong decisions. Should they invest in a 90L back? Or Is 50 L enough for a 6 day himalayan trek? Which brand should they go for?

Within Indiahikes, we have used several backpacks and come to trust them. Yet, there are several trekking backpacks out there these days.

So we thought we'd ask trekkers which backpacks they have used and loved.

Upon conducting a survey with trekkers, we noticed a promising trend. Most of the trekkers' picks turned out to be in the 40L- 60L volume range.

We believe this is a great sign. On any high altitude trek, be it 4 days or 10 days, a 60L backpack is enough to sustain you throughout the trek. It also encourages trekkers to pack only essentials, in turn improving their trek experience.

Having said that, we studied most of the backpacks, the specifications, the reviews, and have arrived at these best backpacks for you to buy.

Before we get into the buying guide - if you are a first time trekker, we would recommend renting gear. You’ll get high quality backpacks at 1/20th of the cost.

Yet, if you’re trekking regularly and would like to buy a trekking backpack, here are the best backpacks you can buy.

Please keep in mind that:

  • These are backpacks that have been recommended by trekkers who have used them. This is not a sponsored post.
  • We have evaluated these backpacks based on comfort, design, compactness, padding and convenience.
  • Most of them are suitable for Himalayan treks, and not day treks.

Let's get started.

Which Backpack to buy for your trek?

1. MT 100 Trekking 50L Backpack

The MT 100 Backpack is a popular backpack among trekkers. It fills all the right criteria for a perfect backpack - Sturdy, lightweight, compact and comfortable to carry.

At around Rs. 5000, this backpack is one of the more affordable ones. You can also look for higher volume backpacks in this variant, but we feel 50 L is perfect for a Himalayan Trek.
