Four 6000-metre peaks and Jammu's Cultural Richness in one trek

While some of our treks in Jammu & Kashmir are very popular, only a few know that other treks in Jammu & Kashmir are equally exciting, yet the adventure is different.

The new Brammah Valley trek in the Kishtwar National Park blends the beauty of Jammu & Kashmir with the kind of landscape we have not usually seen on treks.

First, the Brammah Valley trek offers stunning views of the four prominent peaks of Kishtwar, all above 6,000 m. Getting so close to such big summits on a trek is rare. It’s not just the summit; you see these big mountains from the base to the summit! To compare, at Gaumukh Tapovan, trekkers see the full height of Mt. Shivling and are in complete awe. They get to see around 2,500 metres of the mountain. On the Brammah Valley trek, you see almost 4,000 metres of the big mountains in one go! The impact is nearly two times as much.

1. The Brammah Valley

The Brammah Valley lies in the Kishtwar National Park of Jammu - known for its dense vegetation. Trekking here in itself was an experience. The variety it offers is mind-blowing.

Trekking alongside the gushing Nath river under the canopy of tall coniferous trees, the lush greenery of the valley, the ancient villages, stunning views I got to witness every time I came across a clearing and the Kiddar Maidan - the river delta campsite!

It felt like someone has carefully crafted the whole valley to make it an exciting trek.

2. Enchanting Forest Sections

The forests on the Brammah valley trek are the first thing that immediately drew my attention. It’s the trek with long days of forest walks in the valley. But it never felt monotonous. Trekking under the shades of tall pine trees next to the gushing Nath river was an experience I cherish to date.

None of the treks I have done come close to the variety of pines that I came across in this trek. You see an abundance of chir pine, spruce and abies pindrow. There are a few maple trees too. The landscape and how they are placed also change every day adding to the variety.

On Day 4, before Kiddar Maidan, there is a small patch of silver birch trees. The moment I stepped into this forest section, it became one of my favourite sections of the trek.

The forests open up at every turn to the mesmerising views of the Brammah Valley. These surprises are what make the trek in the forest even more exciting!

3. The Kiddar Maidan (Chhater Chinan) Campsite

At Indiahikes, we are very particular about choosing the best campsites. Even in those, there are some campsites that stand out. Kiddar Maidan is definitely one of them.

The moment I set foot on Kiddar Maidan, I knew this has to be one of the campsites. I was taken aback by the beauty of this place - a huge clearing bordered by silver birch trees on one side and high-rising mountains on the other! The views of majestic Mt Brammah I, Mt Brammah Wife, Eiger and Tarparan peaks elevated the beauty of the whole setting. Walking on the river delta was a unique experience.

The ridge next to the campsite gives you close-up views of Mt Brammah I and Mt Brammah Wife. An adventurous climb to the ridge gives you the summit experience as well. The alpine glow on these peaks is like the cherry on top of a cake.

After the trek, this could possibly become one of the best campsites you have ever stayed at. It is one of mine!

Trek Trivia

Things Nobody Tells You About Brammah Valley

Did you know the last successful attempt to Mt Brammah was 5 decades ago?

Mount Brammah (21,050 ft) was first scaled by Chris Bonington in 1973. He was successful in climbing the Brammah after several failed attempts by British and Japanese mountaineers.
The magnificent Mt Brammah was not an easy peak to climb. At 19,000 ft, he faced the biggest barrier - the pinnacle of rocks on mountain ridges that are called Gendarmes. Immediately after this section was a big slab of ice that can cause avalanche any time. That was an another challenge.
The last attempt was in 1979. On June 30th, 2023 a group of 15 team members from Kolkata and surrounding areas are attempting the massif again. The team will be led by Everest Summiteer Rudraprasad Haldar.
