The Coronavirus is taking on a dangerous turn in our country. Yesterday we had 600 new infections. Our deaths are climbing. Somewhere I am feeling extremely distressed. I am getting mails from trekkers who are experiencing similar anxieties. I thought what better than to continue with our trek stories from the mountains. These are great stress busters at this hour.
So today, I’m sharing 10 great trek stories with you. These are truly some of our best mountain stories. I hope, for a few minutes, they’ll whisk you away from the Corona lockdown and to the mountains, where our hearts are.
This is Part II of this series of great trek stories. If you missed Part I, you’ll find it here. Trekkers loved reading them last week.
On a side note: I just want you to know that all of us at Indiahikes are safe and back in our homes.
1. True Stories of Indiahikes Trek Leaders Saving Lives
These are stories that take you through the heroic rescues done by a few of our Trek Leaders. They are all true stories, many of them with non-Indiahikes trekkers. Read this one, you’ll understand why it tops the list of our 10 great trek stories.
2. How Rescuing a HAPE Victim Turned an Ordinary Man Into a True Trekker
HAPE is a rare form of altitude sickness. And a deadly form. If not treated within hours, it could be fatal. Anyone having to deal with it (whether personally or externally) goes through many changes, emotionally and mentally. And this is a story of one such trekker.
3.The Story of How We Evacuated 162 Team Members from Kashmir
Revisiting the emotionally and physically exhausting evacuation following last year’s lockdown in Kashmir. It’s one of our most-read trek stories.
4. What it Takes to Climb Mt Everest: Sipra Majumdar’s Story
An ex-Army Major, and a trekker with Indiahikes, Sipra summited Everest in 2005. She was part of the First Indian Army Women’s Expedition to Everest. This is the story of what went on before her trek.
5. How I Dealt With Acute Mountain Sickness on My 28th Trek
Our co-founder shares her personal story of how she suffered Acute Mountain Sickness on her Buran Ghati trek. And how she had to rescue herself. There is tremendous learning for all of us here.
6. The Courage Stories of Our Women Trek Leaders
Each of our women Trek Leaders take us through what it takes to be a woman in the male-dominated field of Trek Leading.
7.How an Offline Map Saved My Life
A story from an exploration written by our Slope Manager. It’s never a pleasant experience being lost on a trail, especially at high altitudes. But this story goes on to show how prior preparation can come to your rescue.
8.The Evolution of Poop Management on Treks
This is a true testament of all the hard work and research that has gone into managing trekker poop on all our treks — a basic necessity, yet overlooked aspect of trekking.
9.Why “Altitude Sickness” is Killing the Spirit of Exploration
This is more a debate than a story. Even though we started the discussion more than a year ago, it still remains relevant. Make sure to go through the comments and share your thoughts too.
10. 21 Great Mountain Movies to Keep You Company Through the COVID-19 Lockdown
We asked the Indiahikes team for their favourite mountain movies and these are the best movies out there. You’ll be sorted for more than a week with this list. We’ll soon share the best mountain documentaries as well. We’ve already shared the best adventure books here. So stay tuned!
