Bhrigu Lake or Beas Kund — Which One Should You Choose?
Bhrigu Lake or Beas Kund — Which One Should You Choose?
Category
Trekkers love trekking out of Manali. And rightly so. It’s one of the biggest trekking hubs in our country. Surrounded by the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges, Manali gives you access to some of the most beautiful short Himalayan treks.
Which brings us to a question we get asked all the time:
“Should I do the Bhrigu Lake trek or the Beas Kund trek?”
It’s a valid question. Both are 4-day treks. Both are easily accessible from Manali. And both are known for their stunning natural beauty.
But the experience they offer? That’s very different.
What Do These Treks Have in Common?
To begin with, both Bhrigu Lake and Beas Kund are visually rich treks. The kind of scenery you experience on these trails is rare, even for seasoned trekkers.
But the similarity ends there. From here on, they start to diverge quite strongly.
What Sets Beas Kund Apart?
Beas Kund is a trek through deep valleys and dense forests. As you climb higher, you enter a vast amphitheatre formed by the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. It feels like you’re walking right into the heart of the mountains.
What’s special is the variety you get on this trail — forest walks, clearings, streams, and wide mountain views. You don’t find such variety on most short treks.
Even better, the terrain is gentle. There are ups, downs and flats. It gives your legs time to recover between climbs. This makes it a lot more enjoyable, especially for first-time trekkers.
If you’re stepping into the Himalayas for the first time, Beas Kund is one of the best introductions you can get.

Why Do Trekkers Flock to Bhrigu Lake?
Two words — alpine meadows.
Bhrigu Lake has some of the most stunning grasslands you’ll ever set foot on. Vast rolling meadows spread out in every direction. It’s the kind of landscape that stays with you long after the trek is over.
And then there’s the lake itself, sitting at 14,000 ft. Especially in late May or early June, you’ll often see snow around the lake — which is a big attraction for many trekkers.
But this beauty comes at a cost.
The Bhrigu Lake trail is steep. Right from the get-go, you’re climbing. There’s barely a flat section. If your legs aren’t well-prepared, it can feel like an endless uphill.

So, How Do You Decide Between the Two?
Here’s a simple way to make your decision:
If you’re trekking in May to mid-June:
Go for Bhrigu Lake. The snow around the lake during this time is a huge bonus. It transforms the whole landscape.
If you want a trek that’s easier on your legs, but still full of variety:
Choose Beas Kund. It’s ideal for beginners and still gives you that immersive Himalayan experience.
If you’re trekking after June 15th (July, September, October):
Base your decision on your fitness level.
If you're moderately fit, Beas Kund is a better choice.
If you’ve trained well and want a bit of a challenge, Bhrigu Lake rewards you with unmatched views.
