The first day of trek from Lohajung to Didna has its share of precarious stingers. Trekkers who have done Roopkund trek will recall having encountered being stung by a plant known as Stinging Nettle. Also known as “Bichu Booti”, it is found in abundance on the Roopkund Trail.

As you descent down from Culling village to Neelganga stream, these pesky herbaceous flowering plant are seen in plenty. If you brush against the plant with bare skin will give you an unpleasant rash. This will give you an irritating, burning sensation that may last for a day or two. God forbid if you happen to slip and fall in one of the shrubs how badly that would sting. This is also the spot where Indiahikes Trek Leader will brief the team how to identify the plant and what to do if been stung.

Luckily mother nature gives an option to help you treat this rash. Alongside Stinging Nettle, look for a plant with large leaves and green stem. It is known as “Dock Plant” or “Hara Patta”. Rub one of the leaves from Dock Plant on the affected area. This will help soothing the burning sensation. Alternatively you can also apply Aloe Vira gel or its pulp. So next time you are trekking in Roopkund or any other Himalayan trail, be alert and watchful of these prickly stingers.
