Yellow fever is an acute viral disease caused by mosquito bites. The virus is endemic in tropical areas of Africa and Latin America. Trekkers travelling to Tanzania for the Kilimanjaro trek are advised in their own interest to get themselves vaccinated at the earliest.
It is mandatory to be in possession of a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate before you leave the country. Travellers from India are usually not checked on departure. However, you will be required to produce the certificate on return from Tanzania.
When should I get myself vaccinated?
It is mandatory to get yourself vaccinated at least ten days before you arrive in Africa.
How long is the vaccination certificate valid for?
The certificate is valid for a period of 10 years.
How much will the yellow fever vaccine cost me?
The vaccine will cost you around Rs.350 at public health institutes, which are run by respective state governments. The cost of the vaccine could be 80% higher if purchased from a private chemist/druggist.
What documents do I need to carry to get myself vaccinated?
You need to carry the following documents with you:
- Original passport
- International travel tickets
Where can I get myself vaccinated?
It is advisable to get yourself vaccinated at a PHI (Public Health Institute). PHI’s are run by the state governments, and the cost of the vaccination at these institutes is highly subsidized.
