3. Is offloading available for the Valley of Flowers Trek?
Yes we do have the option of offloading at Valley of Flowers, which means someone else will carry your backpack for you (either a mule or a porter).
Having said that, we encourage you to carry your own backpack on your trek. It not only aligns with the right spirit of trekking but also allows you to have access to all your belongings throughout the trek. We generally suggest offloading only if you have injuries, health issues or other limitations.
On the Valley of Flowers Trek, offloading comes for a charge of Rs. 800 for the entire trek and you can book it online after registering for the trek.
The maximum offloadable weight is limited to 9 kg per person and we will provide you with a weather-resistant kit bag to transfer your belongings.
You will not need a backpack if you're offloading. However, you will need a small day pack to carry essentials like raingear, water-bottles and their likes.
You will find all further details about the Indiahikes offloading process on our Trek Page.
4. What is the nearest ATM to the Valley of Flowers Trek?
Rishikesh is your safest option for last-minute cash withdrawals. Carry around Rs 4,000–5,000 to cover security deposits for rental gear and personal expenses. Planning to visit Badrinath afterwards? Carry extra cash, as ATMs are limited further up and are not guaranteed to function.

The Valley of Flowers National Park opens for visitors in the Summers, usually by the first week of June. And it stays open till the last week of October. The valley remains out of bounds for the rest of the year. So this is the only window in which you can do this trek.
However, the monsoon months are generally considered to be the best time to do the Valley of Flowers Trek. This is the time that the flowers bloom and the valley is at its grandest. Monsoon in the region stretches from July, all the way upto September. And throughout this period, you’ll find different species of flowers blooming at different times. Even if we keep the flowers apart, the lush green valley itself is a big reason to do this trek. It is also during this time that you can stumble upon the rare Brahma Kamal flowers on your way to Hemkund Sahib.
For further details on what exactly to expect across these months, we have a detailed article for you.

6. Is trekking in the Valley of Flowers safe during the monsoon?
Yes, monsoon treks can be safe if you choose the right ones. At Indiahikes, we only run treks that are safe and navigable during the rains. Our teams track weather updates and trail conditions daily, and act quickly if needed — rerouting, rescheduling, or even cancelling to ensure safety.
However, monsoon rains bring with them a different set of problems that are not under our control. While the trekking trails mostly remain navigable, landslides and sudden floods bring about a lot of uncertainty in the road travel. This can cause delays in your drive to and from the base camp. If the monsoons in a particular year are high (like in 2025), then expect flash floods and cloudbursts, which can further affect the road journey to the base camp.
Tips to plan your Valley of Flowers trek better:
- Arrive at your pickup point a day early
- Keep a buffer day or two after your trek
The monsoon transforms the mountains — lush forests, brimming streams, and vibrant wildflowers. Give yourself extra time to soak it all in, without the stress of last-minute travel issues.
7. Is road travel safe during the monsoon?
The major concern during this season is road travel in the mountains, and it is a very valid one. While trekking trails usually remain navigable, landslides and sudden floods create a lot of uncertainty on the roads. This often causes delays while driving to and from the base camp.
In years of heavy monsoon (such as in 2025), trekkers must also be prepared for flash floods and cloudbursts, which can further impact road journeys.
This is why we always advise trekkers to factor in these uncertainties and keep buffer days while planning travel to and from the base camp from their home city.
8. How difficult is the Valley of Flowers trek? Can beginners do it?
Yes, beginners can do the Valley of Flowers trek, provided you’re physically prepared for it. Additionally, this is one of the few treks where you have the comfort of a lodge that you come back to, versus a camp. Even though Ghangaria is still a remote Himalayan hamlet and the facilities are basic, it can still feel a little more comfortable than camping outdoors in monsoon. If you are a first timer, this gives you the unique opportunity of exploring a trek in Uttarakhand, minus the new experience of camping in the wilderness.
However, the trek requires preparation. The Valley of Flowers trek tests you with its terrain, weather, and altitude. One of the toughest days is Day 4, when you climb from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib, a steep ascent with long inclines, a melting glacier crossing, and a demanding descent.
During the monsoon, conditions can change quickly. Heavy rain may flood makeshift bridges, alter trails, or force route changes.
Altitude gain is another challenge:
- Day 1: Over 3,000 ft gained in a single day
- Day 4: Nearly 4,000 ft gained, increasing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), even for fit trekkers
At Indiahikes, Trek Leaders and technical staff monitor conditions, provide safety gear, and carry oxygen and medical kits. In case of emergencies, Ghangaria offers quick evacuation routes.
For more information, head to the How Difficult is the Valley of Flowers Trek Section on the Indiahikes Valley of Flowers Trek Page.
9. Do I need prior trekking experience?
The Valley of Flowers Trek does come with its own challenges. The climb up to the valley from Ghangaria is not easy by any means. The climb to Hemkund Sahib will test your preparations even more. That being said, if you’re adequately prepared, Valley of Flowers can be your first trek. With no outdoor camping involved, it is suited to fit beginners looking for their first taste of high altitude trekking in the Himalayas. However, physical preparation is mandatory. Valley of Flowers trek is rated moderate for a reason. Expect long climbs, steep sections, and slippery trails during the rains.
For more information, head to the How to Get Fit for the Valley of Flowers Trek Section on the Indiahikes Valley of Flowers Trek Page.
10. Is the Valley of Flowers open all year?

The Valley of Flowers National Park opens for visitors in the Summers, usually by the first week of June. And it stays open till the last week of October. The valley remains out of bounds for the rest of the year. So this is the only window in which you can do this trek.
However, the monsoon months are generally considered to be the best time to do the Valley of Flowers Trek.
11. Can senior citizens do the Valley of Flowers Trek?
Yes, senior adults who are reasonably fit and lead an active lifestyle can attempt the Valley of Flowers trek.
Many have completed it and loved the experience. The key is preparation — build stamina, strengthen your legs, and get comfortable with long walks. Just as important is the right mindset: be ready for climbs, changing weather, and a bit of challenge. With this, the trek can be incredibly rewarding at any age.
However, if you are above 58 years old and want to join this trek, you would need to submit a recent Negative Tread Mill Test (TMT) Report which ratifies normal heart response to exercise, suggesting the absence of significant blood flow restrictions or ischemic heart disease. If your TMT is Positive, please consult your doctor and obtain a go-ahead from them before coming on the trek.
In addition, in case a senior member isn’t able to complete the trek or requires evacuation, then the government has made helicopter evacuation available. However, it comes with a significant cost.
12. Are trekking shoes compulsory for the Valley of Flowers Trek?
Trekking shoes with ankle support are a must for the Valley of Flowers trek. The trail is uneven, rocky and often slushy. Often you will find mule dung on trails, which can get slippery. So it’s important that you have shoes with good grip, ankle support and a certain level of water resistance.
If you’re trekking for the first time, we don’t recommend buying new shoes. You can rent trekking shoes with good ankle support — exactly what you need for the Valley of Flowers trek.
13. What should I pack for the trek?
For the Valley of Flowers trek, you will need good trekking shoes, a good backpack, and warm layers since it gets cold on the trek. To elaborate, carry warm layers, quick-dry clothes, rain gear (jacket or poncho), a backpack with a rain cover, sunglasses, a headlamp, waterproof gloves, toiletries, a basic medical kit, and mandatory documents like your medical certificate and ID proof. And this is just the start — the complete packing list has many more essentials
For the detailed packing list, head to the “What to Pack for the Valley of Flowers trek” section on the Indiahikes Valley of Flowers trek page.
14. Is a mobile network or the internet available after the Valley of Flowers trek?
We advise you not to bank on mobile networks on the trek. After Poolna, you’ll be off the grid — no mobile network, no internet. Go prepared and let your family and loved ones know in advance. In case of emergencies, the Indiahikes Team is equipped with walkie-talkies and similar communication mediums to relay information to our base teams.
15. Can I opt for a mule ride to Hemkund Sahib?
While there are options like mules and dolis (where porters carry pilgrims in a basket) available on the trail from Ghangria to Hemkund Sahib, these are not in alignment with the spirit of trekking we follow at Indiahikes. More importantly, when you choose these options, we are unable to ensure your safety on the trail. It puts not just your safety at risk, but also affects the safety and coordination of the entire team. Which is why, if you’re trekking with Indiahikes, these options will not be available to you. We urge you to be mentally and physically prepared to complete the trek on your own — with the support of your Trek Leader and team.
16. What is the accommodation like on the Valley of Flowers Trek?
Before the trek: Stay at the Indiahikes Community Campus in Karchi. Enjoy cosy Swiss tents, our Urjino Café (a subsidiary brand of Indiahikes), and the fully-stocked Crosstrek Store for last-minute gear.
On the trail: Camping isn’t allowed inside the National Park where we trek. We use homestays and lodges maintained by the local authorities along the trail. These accommodations have basic facilities only, as tuned to what can be made available in the remote mountains. All stays are gender-specific, so please plan your travel accordingly.
17. Is Badrinath part of the itinerary for the Valley of Flowers Trek? Can I visit it afterwards?
Badrinath is not included in the official itinerary by Indiahikes. After reaching Poolna, you can visit on your own and return the same day. Most of our trekkers do this. Trek leaders will help arrange transport, and costs are shared among interested trekkers. We head to Karchi the same day, since your trek officially ends there.
18. Can I take a bath on the Valley of Flowers Trek?
These are high-altitude regions where resources are scarce. Taking a bath in these settings also exposes you to a high risk of hypothermia. So we do not keep bathing as an option in any of our high altitude treks, including Valley of Flowers.
