Trekking in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is known for its majestic mountain ranges in the Indian Himalayas. And for this reason, it is famous among trekkers and tourists alike. The state is home to significant and famous mountain ranges:

  • Pir Panjal Range
  • Dhauladhar Range
  • Zanskar Range {Part of Zanskar now lies under Ladakh, with its glaciers like the Drang Drung Glacier (23 km long) being noteworthy.}

Trekking to these regions also offers glimpses of the Tibetan Himalayas, with cultural influences spanning India, Tibet, and Nepal. Himachal Pradesh’s highest peaks reach up to around 6,816 meters, with Riyo Purgyil being the tallest peak in the state. Comparing it with the neighbouring state, Uttarakhand has higher elevations, with peaks touching around 7,800 meters, such as Nanda Devi (7,816 meters) and Mount Kamet (7,756 meters).

It is not just the mountain ranges; Himachal Pradesh is a popular tourist destination because of its rich and inviting culture. Old Manali, a major tourist attraction, exudes a wonderful and authentic Himachali culture. The place also offers a taste of Himachal trekking. A trek to Rani Sui Lake, popular among foreigners, also begins here. Funnelling down deeper into the culture of the region: German bakeries in Manali and Naggar grab a chunk, offering apple pies and pineapple pastries. This is because of German and French climbers’ historical influence in the region.

Dharamshala (the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh) is another cultural hub in the state and is known as the residence of the Dalai Lama (currently the 14th). The monasteries preserve the ancient Tibetan sand art tradition. And one can observe a beautiful influence of Buddhist culture in the area. Triund and Kareri Lake treks have their base located in Dharamshala. These routes are not just popular tourist attractions but are used by locals who regularly traverse through the trails.

Climbing towards the Parvati Valley, It is home to several important villages with distinct cultures. Manikaran, a famous spiritual spot, is known for Manikaran Gurudwara and a Shiva temple. The valley also hosts Tosh and Kasol (a town called the Amsterdam of India). Do any of the two need any introduction? No, we guess! Kasol is a trekkers paradise, offering a number of trekking trails, like Kheerganga, Tirthan Valley, and more, in and around. Lastly, a very famous trek in Himachal Pradesh: Chandrakhani pass connects Kullu Valley with Malana village of Parvati Valley

Coming towards the Lahaul and Spiti side of the state, famous treks like Pin Parvati Pass and Miyar Valley are spread across this side of the state. The Atal Tunnel has improved accessibility to the region. However, Nako and Kaza (popular tourist destinations) are not directly affected by the Atal Tunnel because these villages are situated in the Spiti Valley, which is accessible through routes such as the Hindustan-Tibet Road (via Shimla). While the Atal Tunnel enhances connectivity to Lahaul and indirectly impacts travel to Spiti, it does not directly improve accessibility to Nako or Kaza. Spiti Valley still faces accessibility challenges in winter due to heavy snowfall, particularly on the Kunzum Pass and other connecting roads.

Did you know? Nako’s frozen lakes are popular for adventure sports like ice skating during winter.

Upcoming Treks in Himachal by Indiahikes

Indiahikes is the safest trekking organisation in India which runs treks in different regions of Himachal Pradesh. Our treks in Himachal are spread across different regions, giving you a varied experience of terrains, expansive peaks, culture, adventure, and natural elements.

Starting with the major Kullu region, there are upcoming treks like Bhrigu Lake which starts from Manali and goes to a high-altitude alpine lake (Bhrigu Lake). Next is Beas Kund, which also starts from Manali and leads to the source of the famous Beas River. This trek offers a majestic view of the famous peaks of Himachal, notably Hanuman Tibba and Friendship Peak. The third upcoming trek in the region is a cultural feast. Yes, we are talking about Chandrakhani Pass. It starts from Naggar (which is the former capital of Kullu). Another trek from Kullu district which is hot in our upcoming list is the Hampta Pass trek. Hampta Pass dramatically crosses into the Lahaul Valley, taking you from lush landscapes to the barren mountains. And if we completely shift to the Lahaul and Spiti side, there is one upcoming trek falling in the Miyar Valley region. It is popularly known as the Miyar Valley trek.

Both the Rupin Pass & the Buran Ghati trek start from the Shimla district. While the Rupin Pass ends in the Sangla Kanda, the Buran Ghati trek ends in Barua Village. Interestingly, both of these endpoints are a part of Kinnaur district.

While we are talking about the region, it is important to note that the Indiahikes trekking experience is more than traversing from start to end. We enable transformative treks. By transformation, we mean experiences that enable trekkers to “connect to self”, “connect to nature”, and “connect to the people”.

Over the years, Indiahikes has enabled, promoted, and insisted on sustainable trekking. Below is the link for the Green Trails and No Compromise Green Trails Promise. It is an initiative to leave mountains better than we find them.

Treks Documented by Indiahikes in Himachal

The state is known as the Gateway to High Passes. Some famous trekkable passes include: the Kugti Pass, Pin Parvati Pass, Sar Pass, Rohtang Pass, Indrahar Pass, and Bhubhu Pass, among a few more.

The state is also connected to Ladakh through passes, like Baralacha La and Shinkula Pass.

Not just the high trekkable passes, the state attracts climbers from all around the globe. It features peaks like Indrasan, which is climbed only a handful of times. Himachal’s Mount Papsura (also called “The Peak of Evil”) remains one of the most challenging peaks, with successful ascents by very few climbers. A foreign female climber, Hilaree Nelson, climbed and skied down Mount Papsura in March 2013, setting a new record

Apart from climbing peaks and traversing through passes, popular trekking peaks of the region include:

  • Mount Patalsu
  • Mount Friendship
  • Mount Yunam (and more)

Why have we documented some treks instead of actively running them?

There are so many treks in Himachal which are not operationally possible to run by the organisation, hence we empower the trekkers with information so they can complete the trek in DIY style.

Most of the Himachal treks fall into moderate to moderate-difficult categories. Many of these treks involve pass crossing, there are moraine sections to cover, boulders to navigate through, steep summit climbs, change of terrain, and long walks. All these factors make a trek a little challenging for beginners. Not to worry, fit beginners can easily complete these treks, considering they comply with Indiahikes fitness criteria.
