“In April, I tested positive for Covid. It was a severely tough phase of my life. My lungs were filled with water and I got pneumonia as well. It took me two months to recover from it.

I have done a few treks earlier but since Covid, I had completely forgotten about the joy it used to bring me.

The past few months were very rough for me and my family. Along with my illness, we lost our uncle in July when we had gone to visit Kashmir.

Mountains which used to be my solution to every problem suddenly became a bad omen in the family.

However, something in me didn’t want to believe this. I decided to go for a trek just after he passed away.

I chose the Bhrigu Lake trek. Later, going there looked a bit uncertain due to adverse rainfall in the valley. So when I looked at other options, I found the Pin Bhaba Pass trek.

It was definitely tougher than Bhrigu Lake but I wanted to push myself to take up this challenge!

I was cycling for about 4-5 hours per day on average just so that I can be prepared well.

On the trek, I remember how I was struggling on the first day. I was constantly worried about getting hit by the altitude and affecting my lungs.

Before the summit day, when our Trek Leader told us about a recent evacuation of a trekker who was previously affected by Covid, I was extremely scared because I had a similar history.

With all these doubts, I climbed the summit. It wasn’t an easy climb for sure. I hit rock bottom several times on the way.

And when I finally reached there, I broke down completely. I remember weeping my heart out.

A huge lump was sitting on my soul for a long time and it just vanished completely.

I suddenly found my long lost confidence back.

There’s a nice analogy I discovered on this trek - A trek takes you through a lot of rock bottoms,  but then you take some rest, drink some water and start walking again, one step at a time. In the same way, life comes with a lot of struggles but if you will keep moving forward, you will get out of the problems.”

“Well, my story starts with a dream. A few months ago, I dreamt that I was scaling Mount Everest. Even though it was just a dream, I was quite perplexed.

It felt so irrelevant to think about going for a trek at this age. And yet, I couldn't shake it off.

I went about sharing this with my family and friends. All of them had a good laugh. It was amusing for them that I was thinking about such adventures at this age of my life.

Having a sedentary work life for a long period of time I wanted to finally take up some challenge in my life. That’s when I decided to give trekking a chance.

I signed up for a trek and started preparing for it with utmost dedication.

There was a fitness test, which I had to complete and for that I had to run 5kms.

When I initially started out, I was having a decent speed of covering 5 km in 45 minutes. However, I wanted to push myself and be prepared well. Through consistent practice I brought it down to 5 km in 37 minutes.

On the trek, the first day went smoothly, but on the second day I started having symptoms of AMS. I had a headache and didn’t feel like eating anything.

My Trek Leader Amrut put me on a Diamox course.

The third day, when we had to scale Tarsar Lake, I thought of giving up just before reaching there.

But the minute I reached the lake after putting in so much effort, I just couldn’t take my eyes off the view that was there in front of me!

The beauty of that place subsided my physical pain and I decided to keep going further.

There’s so much to the experience of walking among these big mountains. It makes you feel nothing but humble from the inside.

Completing this trek has given me the confidence to go on more treks now.

At the age of 61, preparing for a trek has given me fitness as a lifestyle. I have improved my stamina levels, reduced weight and I don’t know what all is coming my way.

How Mahendra Fulfilled His Dream of Trekking at the Age of 61 Years

As a mother, I always wondered to myself, “Can I take a break from this life, for just a few days?”, “Am I really allowed to take a break?” I didn’t think this thought was a possibility. 

I am a working professional with a huge support system back home - with my mother, husband, and the entire family encouraging me daily. We are there for each other through thick and thin. 

But people in my family are all very busy in their lives. I often find it difficult to reach out to them when I need them. 

However, I knew I needed to go somewhere alone. I wanted to return to my home a better version of myself. I booked the Tarsar Marsar trek with Indiahikes, and I was yet to know the transformation that awaited me. 

The first few days of the trek went really well; we enjoyed the scenery and the beauty of the mountains. 

But things suddenly changed on day 3. I started feeling very low while entering the meadows of Tarsar - I had an upset stomach, I was shivering, and my legs had turned pale. 

Quickly and without warning, my body started giving up. My pace turned languid, and I was falling behind. Ramon, our trek leader, along with the rest of the team had already started climbing the boulder section.

But within a few minutes, Ramon did something that deeply touched me. Despite having climbed a long way, he retraced all his steps, just to ask me, “Asavari, can you do it?” At that instance, something changed from within. I said, “I will do it, I’m feeling unhealthy, but I will climb at my own pace.” 

Without giving up, I walked with my eyes closed, clutching Ramon’s hands. I knew that there was someone to support me even if I fell down. 

In the following 100 meters, everything changed. On this trek, I was alone. But, Ramon’s gesture of going out of his way to reach out to me brought an intense change in my heart. The sight of him standing high, strong, and confident - radiating energy of support and comfort, shifted my gears. 

When I reflect on the trek, I realize that maybe I needed someone to reach out to me. Someone extending a helping hand to someone who really needs it. That small act transformed my view. It helped me gain a sense of acceptance and harmony. I was able to bring back a better version of myself from the mountains. 

Before the trek, I followed my duties as a mother and working woman. But after this trek, I realized the importance of being there for myself and my family. To call out to them, to make sure I’m there for them when they really need my help, and also, to ask for help when I really need it.

This is a trek specially designed for trekkers above 58 years. The itinerary is specially designed to be different from a regular trek. The trek fee is also Rs 3000 more than the regular fee (Please note this is only for Himalayan treks) Know more about the trek here.  

Our Adventure Therapy Trek is led by a trained therapist, who will guide you through reflective and therapeutic exercises during the trek. To accommodate this expertise, the fee is ₹5,000 higher than our regular trek fee. Know more about the trek here.
