At Indiahikes, we believe that trekking is among the best outdoor activities you can do. Our treks are meticulously crafted experiences. They are designed to help you discover a new you. Our outdoor leaders conduct sessions that weave mindfulness into your adventure. So, whether it's for that reflective pause by a mountain stream or a contemplative moment at the summit, here are some of the best treks for you to do in 2024.

It wasn’t easy for us to choose the best Indian treks for this guide, as every trek is beautiful in its own way. In addition to the best hiking trails in India, we have added some international treks that we think you should not miss.

Treks like Dayara Bugyal, Brahmatal and Kedarkantha are often termed the best hiking trips in India as they are perfect for beginners and can be done all year round, except in the monsoon.

In the months of monsoon, between July and September, Indiahikes suggest treks like Hampta Pass, Valley of Flowers, Kashmir Great Lakes and Tarsar Marsar.

For those who wish to trek in the snow, the months between December and April offer the best experience. Here’s what we recommend as the best treks in December to February. March is the best month to trek Everest Base Camp, following which one can opt for springtime treks until April. Sandakphu Phalut, Khopra Ridge and Goechala are some of the best summer treks in the Himalayas.

Best Himalayan Treks 2024 Guide: 44 Best Treks in India

The above-mentioned treks are examples of the best treks as per months and seasons. However, to zero in on the best hiking trips, trekkers must evaluate their fitness level. To help you understand better, we have divided the treks into four categories of difficulty:

  • Easy-Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Moderate-Difficult
  • Difficult

(Click here to read what our difficulty ratings mean)

Now, when you know which type of trek to choose based on season, difficulty level, and the month of your choice, check out our Upcoming Treks page to not miss out on dates that suit you. But before that, refer to the below-mentioned list of the best hiking tours to make a wise choice.

Easy-moderate treks:

1. Benog Tibba Trek

Duration: 2 Days

Difficulty level: Easy

Region: Uttarakhand

Mussoorie is one of the best hiking destinations in India. One of the region’s popular short hikes, the Benog Tibba Trek, takes you through the 1993-established Mussoorie Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to the nearly extinct Mountain Quail.

The best hike in Mussoorie begins at the Cloud End Forest Resort. Starting in the wilderness, you trek through lush green forests with the captivating sounds of birds, which makes this a perfect trek for beginners. The long forest protects you from harsh sunlight and reduces the fatigue of an otherwise steep trail. All this makes Benog Tibba the best trek for beginners.

2. Channarayana Durga Trek

Duration: 2 Days

Difficulty level: Easy - Moderate

Region: Karnataka

Channarayana Durga Trek is one of the best treks around Bangalore. We at Indiahikes love this gem of a trek hidden near the Madhugiri Fort in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. The start of the trek is close to the SH 9 state highway, which connects Madhugiri with Dabaspet.

It is one of the most beautiful treks, as walking through the majestic fort transports you to mediaeval times, when it was a strategic fortress. A part of the Navadurgas around Bangalore, this fort is divided into multiple layers and sections.

4. Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

The Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek could undoubtedly be one of the 10 best hiking trails in India. The 6-day trek offers you enchanting views of all the major summits of western and eastern Uttarakhand from the Chandrashila summit.

The full-bloomed rhododendrons during the spring months make Chandrashila Trek one of the best destinations for hiking. One gets to see different species of birds on the trail, as it is also known as a paradise for bird watchers.

5. Kedarkantha Trek

Duration: 6 Days

Difficulty level: Easy - Moderate

Region: Uttarakhand

Best month to visit Kedarkantha: December to April, (accessible all seasons, except monsoon).

Kedarkantha is one of the first few treks that Indiahikes started organising. The all-seasons trek offers a stunning summit climb as the Kedarkantha peak stands at an altitude of 12,500 ft. One gets a 360-degree view of other Himalayan peaks from the top.

Over the years, we have discovered new and adventurous routes to the summit. This is what makes Indiahikes the best trekking company for Kedarkantha trek.

Instead of looking for the best travel agency for Kedarkantha trek, head to our Kedarkantha trek page below and plan your trek with Indiahikes.

6. Minchukallu Betta Trek

Duration: 2 Days

Difficulty level: Easy - Moderate

Region: Karnataka

Minchukallu Betta is also one of the best treks near Bangalore. Situated on a massive hill, around 85 km away from Bangalore, the Minchukallu Betta trek isn’t very popular among trekkers.

It was once a three-stage fortified hill. The ruins of the fort wall and temple are some wonders that surprise you on one of the best hiking routes. The trek starts from Masanipalya village, 18 km away from Tumkur. From Masanipalya village, the stepped, multilayered hillock is a great sight for the start of your adventure.

Moderate treks:

7. Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek

Duration: 6 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Uttarakhand

Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek offers the grandest of mountain views in comparison to other meadow treks in India. This trek could be one of your best hiking experiences, as it offers you the sight of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti jutting right out of the meadows.

Jutting out doesn’t mean you see the tops of these mountains; you see the entire face—almost 6000–7000 feet of it—rising right in front of you.

8. Beas Kund Trek

Duration: 4 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Himachal Pradesh

Beas Kund Trek is the best mountain hike around Manali, which takes you right to the source of the river that flows through the town. (You might have followed the very same river upstream while getting into Manali!)

But one of the reasons trekkers love this trek is the setting. Picture this: Lush green grasslands flourish below the summits of the three biggest mountains around Manali. And hidden in these grasslands is the Emerald Lake, out of which the river Beas emerges.

9. Bhrigu Lake Trek

Duration: 4 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Himachal Pradesh

Even though the Bhrigu Lake Trek is moderately difficult, it is one of the best hiking trails in India for beginners. The trek starts from Gulaba, a village around 20 km north of Manali.

In mythology, this is the place where the famous saint Maharishi Bhrigu sat in deep meditation. However, we believe the lake is not the only thing the trek has to offer. You must do the Bhrigu Lake trek for its grasslands because most of its alpine meadows start at around 11,000 feet above the treeline.

10. Brahmatal Trek

Duration: 6 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Uttarakhand

Best time to do the Brahmatal Trek: All seasons, except monsoon

Like several other treks, the Brahmatal Trek was first explored and documented by Indiahikes. The highest point on this trek is the Brahmatal Top at 12,250 ft. It is a stunning trek. A new set of mountains opens before you: Mt. Chaukhamba, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Hathi Ghoda, Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti are by your side throughout the trek.

Brahmatal is an excellent trek to do solo as well. It is one of the best hikes in the winter. There is a lot of snow on the trail in December, January and February. The trek runs until the end of April.

11. Brammah Valley Trek

Duration: 7 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Jammu & Kashmir

Kashmir is called the paradise on earth and some of the best treks, like the Brammah Valley trek, are testament to this. While walking through Kishtwar National Park, it’s hard not to get mesmerised by the beauty of Kashmir.

The summit of the Brammah Valley trek offers stunning views of the four prominent peaks of Kishtwar, all above 6,000 m. On the trail to the summit, you see 4,000 metres of the big mountains in one go. Doesn’t it sound like the best trek in India?

12. Chandrakhani Pass Trek

Duration: 5 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Himachal Pradesh

Manali is one of the best trekking destinations for tourists from India and abroad. Chandrakhani Pass is a popular trek in the Manali region. It starts in Naggar, the ancient capital of the Kullu valley and takes you to Malana, the village with strange customs.

There is an interesting story about the Chandrakhani Pass. In ancient times, the presiding god of Malana, God Jamlu, was carrying all the gods in a pot on this route. He opened the basket full of gods on top of the Chandrakhani Pass. A strong wind blew the gods away and they settled in various spots in the valley. Which is why, even now, the Kullu valley is called the valley of gods.

15. Hampta Pass Trek

Duration: 6 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Himachal Pradesh

Best Time to do the Hampta Pass Trek: Monsoon

If you ask trekkers to list the 10 best treks in India, Hampta Pass will easily find its name on most of the lists. According to Indiahikes founder, Arjun Majumdar, “Hampta Pass was the first trek that we explored outside our big ones in Uttarakhand. This was in 2010. It is perhaps one of the best treks to do in Himachal. It is a trek close to my heart because I know Indiahikes put it on the map for trekkers to do. It is a trek that I would do again. My list of great treks is incomplete without this one.".

The Hampta Pass Trek allows you to cross the lush green valleys of Kullu to reach an overhang high in the mountains, which offers the view of the entire Spiti valley in one wide panoramic sweep. One can experience the best hiking in May on this trek.

Best time to do the Har Ki Dun Trek: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter

Har Ki Dun Trek is one of the best treks in Uttarakhand, thanks to the Ruinsara Tal Trek, which is located in complete isolation. The Ruinsara valley is said to be prettier than the Har Ki Dun valley itself.

“The Har Ki Dun-Ruinsara Tal trek brings out the perfect blend of culture and beauty in the Himalayas. Getting to experience the ancient Himalayan villages along with breathtakingly beautiful valleys, lakes and meadows is a very rare combination to come by,” says our co-founder Sandhya.

Kuari Pass is a mountain lover's delight. You have an unending vista of the biggest mountains in India opening up right from day one. You walk on the best mountain for hiking, as it offers you the clearest view of the full face of Mt. Nanda Devi, India’s highest mountain.

More than this, Kuari Pass is a near-perfect trek. You go through ancient forests filled with oaks and rhododendrons. Just as your eyes are getting used to the tree canopy above, the trail opens into meadows. This interplay of different kinds of landscapes makes the trek very exciting.

20. Ranthan Kharak Trek

Duration: 7 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Uttarakhand

Trekking in Uttarakhand is synonymous with trekking in Gharwal. Yet, unknown to most, the neighbouring Kumaon has stunning mountains, magnificent forests, undulating meadows, and vast clearings. Kumaon is largely unexplored and has received little attention. Kumaon's Ranthan Kharak Trek is among the best mountain treks that are still undiscovered by the crowd.

On this trek, you see India's highest peak, Nanda Devi, and its sister peak, Sunanda Devi (also known as Nanda Devi East). We can see the sun rise over these two formidable peaks from our Chophu camp. On our right, sticking out of the clouds, is the impressive, jagged peak of Nanda Kot.

Moderate-Difficult Treks:

25. Bodpathri Meadows Trek

Duration: 7 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate - Difficult

Region: Kashmir

Bodpathri Meadows Trek is one of the best treks in Kashmir, as it was hidden from trekkers under the army's jurisdiction for decades.

Trekkers have never stepped into such a beautiful part of Kashmir. This region was out of bounds until a few years ago. Even now, you can see the remains of army bunkers and trenches on the trail. What has stayed is the untouched beauty that no one has seen before—the forests, meadows, valleys, rivers and lakes.

The trail begins at the historical town of Janglik, goes into a delightfully deep forest and then bursts into Dayara meadows. All this makes Buran Ghati the best summer trek.

28. Gurez Valley Trek

Duration: 7 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate - Difficult

Region: Kashmir

Gurez is the last latitude of India, which is why it is very unlike any other part of Kashmir. The topography changes totally, even though it is only six hours north of Srinagar. You will notice it in the trees, especially. The trees are different, and so is the way they are laid out in the valley.

The Razdan pass you cross to get to Gurez pushes you into a very different landscape. Our trek in Gurez reminds us more of our treks in Kyrgyzstan and Georgia than they do of our treks in Kashmir, so different is the landscape. We feel we are in a different locale, even though we are in Kashmir. All this adds the Gurez Valley Trek to the list of the best treks of India.

31. Miyar Valley Trek

Duration: 7 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate - Difficult

Region: Manali

Lahaul has some of the best treks in Himachal Pradesh. Hidden across the Rohtang Pass, which would remain closed through most of the year, the region was cut off for trekkers. But with the opening of the Atal Tunnel came the possibility of trekking in Lahaul throughout the monsoons, when Lahaul is at its lushest.

In this remote region of Lahaul, a valley filled with flowers hangs quietly, escaping the attention of trekkers. The route to this valley alternates between remote mountain valleys, quaint villages, and flower beds dominated by the overwhelming presence of Himalayan orchids. This valley is the Miyar Valley.

So, when in Manali, instead of searching for trekking trails near me, one should opt for this one. Miyar Valley Trek is one of the best treks Himachal Pradesh could offer.

In July, the grasslands are a soft green carpet, slowly blooming into a flower bed in August. In September, the meadows slowly start taking on a beautiful yellow tinge, still replete with flowers.”

The Nafran Valley trek changes appearance and colour throughout the three months—July, August and September.

Duration: 7 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate - Difficult

Region: Jammu and Kashmir

Pir Panjal Lakes Trek is the best trek in May–June, as you experience 10 lakes, 4 meadows and endless jaw-dropping moments.

“Things are still sinking in for me after what we got to witness on this exploratory trek. I am unable to put words into what we went through in this hidden gem of Jammu and Kashmir.  First, the forest section. I haven't seen any other treks in Kashmir with such dense forests. It's a mix of pine and oak. There were such deafening sounds from cicadas and birds as we walked that we couldn’t hear each other speak. For most of us, this transported us to our Uttarakhand forests,” explains Suhas Saya, Explorer and Documenter at Indiahikes, who completed the trek in August 2023.

35. Tulian Lake Trek

Duration: 5 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate - Difficult

Region: Kashmir

The Tulian Lake Trek is the best trek in May and its subsequent months until October. Along with stunning meadows and an alpine lake, the Tulian Lake trek has something that our other treks in Kashmir do not: the famous flora of Kashmir.

There are pine, fir, chir, and spruce trees. You may think you have seen these trees before, but you have not. These forests differ significantly from those in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, or Sikkim. They resemble European vegetation more than they do in our Indian forests.

After the best treks for beginners in India, we present you some of the most difficult and best treks below.

Difficult treks:

36. Bali Pass Trek

Duration: 8 Days

Difficulty level: Difficult

Region: Uttarakhand

Best month for Bali Pass Trek: June, September

The Bali Pass trek is a difficult Himalayan trek. This is partly due to the high altitude, that rises to over 16,000 feet. The Bali Pass trek is more than an adventure-filled trek; you also pass through some historical villages and trek to Ruinsara Tal, a stunning high-altitude lake.

Another aspect that stands out on the Bali Pass trek is the rocky approach to Bali Pass itself. In the months of June and July, the higher regions of the pass are covered in snow! In the monsoon, it is a drier patch. If you enjoy high-altitude pass traverses, this is the trek for you. All this makes it one of the best treks in Uttarakhand.

The world knows of the Everest Base Camp trail. It is the best base camp trek and on every mountain lover’s bucket list. It’s impossible to exclude this trek from the 10 best treks in the world.

This trail offers you the best of both worlds: the well-trodden Everest region and the lesser-visited Gokyo region. By adding three more days to the itinerary, the trail becomes infinitely more rewarding.

First, the views from the Gokyo Ri summit are much grander than the ones you will see from the top of Kala Patthar in the Everest region. From Kala Patthar, you would see three of the 14 eighth-thousanders in the world: the Everest, Makalu and Lhotse. On the Gokyo Ri summit, you not only see these mountains but also another eight-thousander, Cho Oyu. Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world, is an additional treat you get on the Gokyo trail.
